Super Secret Mini Mefi Meetup

Appalachian Trail hiker, Zak (aka wearyaswater) took me up on my mefi offer. She made it to Virginia!! Yay, that is a benchmark for thru-hikers. She landed in Damascus, Virginia (a major trail town) in the middle of the week so I did not post a flash meetup because (1) remote location (2) middle of the week. So we had maybe the tiniest mefi meetup ever (= 2 members.) BUT we made a sign (link to her blog post... scroll down for the photos.) I am a romantic where this trail is concerned. I am not going to tell you that wearyaswater is not having a struggle. She is and is doing very well! What I want to say to you is that the struggle is an inextricable part of it and the struggle for each is as different as we are as individuals. This has been true from the very beginning. Even as I consider and witness the changes in technology and gear there are aspects of the trail that do not change and thwart many advancements. Even though my first mefi meetup was just the two of us I was SO EXCITED! I didn't think I would ever have a chance to meet a Mefite IRL. Beans! Beans! Cans of beans!

I would like to take this time to note that we had our (first?) NOVA meetup and it was a wonderful success! While the original players were unknown, we navigated our way forward by waving cans of beans at any soul who looked a little too bewildered and lost. By way of perseverance and long arms it worked, and we had a lovely time, such that we hope to bring you more stories of such heroics in the coming future. As such, I present to you: The can(s) of beans. Notes: - Why is NOVA a big deal? Because DC is just so very far away... - I would like it to be known that the Grey Poupon Mustard was merely a structural component to form a significant impact to the totem's elevation for the purposes of visibility. - And before I forget, there seems to be a significant bias for kidney beans against black beans, as postulated after a poll of the preferences of the attending members. Survey: Metafilter Retreat!

A group of us excited about planning a possible Metafilter retreat have put together a survey and a tentative planning timeline. Please take the survey so we can get a sense of what folks are hoping for. It's brief (9 questions and an option to leave an e-mail address for periodic updates from yours truly), and will be open until March 12th at 11:45 pm PT. Once data collection is closed, the "planning committee" (there's about a dozen of us at the moment, give or take) will review that data and pick a date, city and general price range by late May/early June. We hope to have nailed down a venue, detailed price breakdowns, etc, later in the summer, at which point we can start working on fun stuff like food, carpools, skits, buttons, whatever. Any questions? Please holler, either in this post or via MeMail/email. I think this will be the last MeTa post on the retreat until we have finalized the date/location/venue this summer, so definitely leave an e-mail in the survey if you'd like updates as we go. I promise not to send too many.

Notification of Changes to IRL Meetups

Is it possible to get a memail if there have been date/time/location changes to an IRL event they've RSVP'd to? And as an extension, possibly a notification when a proposed event is confirmed? A meetup in Chicago that got moved from one weekend to another got me thinking about this. The poster of the event was nice enough to add text to the post indicating the date change so it was viewable when I saw the post in my recent activity or in the regular IRL pages. But, had I not visited the site between the time the change was made and the original meetup date, I would have missed the new info. It would be really nice to get a memail alert to any changes. The proposed-to-confirmed notification is probably a bit messier since there's no RSVP option on a proposed event. So maybe a notification based on who has commented in the thread? Or adding some sort of "I'm interested" RSVP function to the proposed event posts? That could help gauge interest in the event as well as provide a base for which users would get a notification if the event is confirmed. So what do you guys think? These are probably things that could be accomplished using IFFT or an RSS feed or something, but I (and probably other members) don't use these services as frequently as my memail - and the email I receive each time I get a memail. This is my first pony in almost seven years, so be gentle.

Feature request: opt-in email or MeMail when a meetup in your city is proposed. I visit MeFi daily but have recently missed a discussion on a meetup in my city. Can we have an opt-in feature where we list our city/town/state/country and can be emailed or memailed when a proposal for a meetup hits the IRL site?

There are three (1, 2, 3) NYC meetups scheduled for next Saturday. Is that the same-day same-city record? (Though one of them involves meeting in the city and then going hiking north of the city, so maybe it only counts as two.)

What's the format for meetups? There's a proposed meetup coming up in Rome this month, suggested by kjs4, but for some reason it doesn't appear to show up on the IRL page's "Proposed meetups" list. I'm hoping to take part, but I can find/access the thread again only by keeping it on my "Recent activity" list. Is a specific tag (e.g. maybe "meetup") required to get it onto that list where I (and others nearby) can follow it?

Time for the annual SXSWi meetup/presentations/networking/etc thread! I'm attending SXSWi, and last year's Metafilter meetup and seeing Mathowie & Jessamyn's sessions were the highlight of my time in Austin. I'd love to MeFi-ize my SXSW again this year. Please share if you're presenting or attending at SXSWi, and let's try to schedule another meetup. Looking to Austinites to pretty please help with location and meetup-planning if you can. I realize we should propose a meetup in IRL and I'm happy to do that separately if/once the crowd decides on something. I'm just attending 3/8 - 3/13, not presenting, so I have nothing to offer. Other than my charm, enthusiasm, and love for Metafilter...

In just over four hours, our Trivial Special Forces will reassemble in central London to do battle with our arch-nemeses, Reddit, in a re-match after we mopped the floor with them last time. Could we revisit the close-a-proposed-meetup thing on IRL? I think the last time this was discussed was July and the discussion ended at just let a mod know and they'll kill it on their end. Since then, several proposed meetups (at least over here in Chicago) have fizzled out. When I was the proposer, I asked pb to close mine up, but now there are meetups hanging out on the sidebar that aren't mine (so pb would probably have to contact the OP to ok it, meaning more mod-side work) and their presence making me twitchy. Is the best thing to do still to let the mods know? (If so, Chicago needs some work...) Or could we have some sort of button option that the OP of the thread could click to close it up on their end? Thanks!

Reddit vs Metafilter - London Oct 10th

Reddit has discovered that the London Mefites are going to a pub quiz at the Hat and Tun on 10th Oct, and are proposing to 'hand their asses to them', along with alien signs, hats, vuvuzelas, etc. The gauntlet has been thrown, Mefites, and we must respond with overwhelming pancakes. I know that this sort of stuff is meant for IRL, but our reputation is at stake here, ladies and gentlemen. The stakes have risen.

The IRL meetup for Glasgow i'm proposing won't accept real, actual addresses. I've tried putting the Louden Tavern into it and used the addy given by google maps but it's not happening - is there a way just to bypass the google maps bit ?

meetup for not so many? Is it possible to post a meetup for just a few people to come with? I'm in New York and have a ton of friends, but few who want to do some of the specific things I really like ( going to a golf driving range, just as example). I've been to one of the meetups and it was fun, but was just wondering if it's possible to post events where a ton of people might not be appropriate. *NB* I don't mean Datefilter.

Irish meetup? Mr dbmcd will be in Ireland for three weeks (we leave on 14 Feb), and would love to meetup with a few (or more) fellow me-fites! I tried to post to IRL, but got an error. We'll be in Portumna for two days (15/16), then up to Westport for five days (through the 22), on the road a few days, then down to Cork city for five days, then finishing up in Killarney (for a music festival), leaving on the 5th to Shannon for the night before we fly out the next day. If any of these locations are do-able, post here. I'll be checking the Interwebs while we're gone.

Confused about "Most popular cities in the past three months" in IRL What does the "Most popular cities in the past three months" list? We had a meetup in Rome on 10 January. OK, so there were only 5 of us, but we didn't even make a "Rome, Italy (1)" listing. I'm not complaining; I'm just wondering what the MPCITLTM list lists.

Given this post, I was thinking - about how the conversation turned to "people don't go to libraries..." I don't really do meet-ups (I'm SuperDad in my free time), but might I propose that somebody somewhere start pushing for some library meet-ups? Note - this is not a specific meet-up proposal, more a meet-up culture proposal. Sure there's no beer in a library (exception: The Library in Portsmouth, NH... which doesn't count as an actual library since you can't check out books and there are no librarians), but there is media, wifi and librarians - all things mefites seem to go for... Heck, I don't even know how or what 10-15 mefites would do in a "supposed to be quiet" setting... Also, a few years from now, when I have kids that are a bit older, I'll probably go to them... may even take the kids since it sounds like there might not be a library to go to...

Fort Worthians, unite! (or at least meet up!) After so many of us came out of the woodwork in this thread, I thought we should start a meetup thread. I'm pretty much open. I would prefer to go somewhere either downtown (Flying Saucer?), Southside (lots of places on Magnolia), or along Seventh. With the holidays coming, there should be some time we can get together (maybe after all the holiday parties in the week between Christmas and New Years?)

Bug-Filter: Recent Meetups pane only shows one meetup per city per day even if multiple meetups occured. On Oct. 30, there were two meetups in Seattle. However, the Recent Meetups pane on the right site of MeTa only provides a link to the bumper car meetup. In the minuscule sample size we have it looks as though it pulls the latest meetup for the day and no others.

Can I have a pony IRL? I mean... for IRL? I find the sidebar feed to be quite exciting, but I was wondering if it would be possible to add a number next to each little headline that indicates how many confirmed attendees there are so far. Having a quick tally visible from the outside would be handy -- I wouldn't have to click inside each one to see if anything had changed since I last visited the thread. Also, if the "Attending" tally showed up separately on the main page I think it would provide a slight incentive for people to actually click it and be counted instead of waffling in maybe-land for eternity. Also, a thing to click afterward to allowed us to confirm (if we want to) that we DID in fact attend the event? That way if I didn't make it, I could see if someone I knew happened to show up. And if I did make it to the meetup, maybe I'd like to look back and jog my memory about who was there. I know the comments usually did this for us, but people don't seem to comment as much in IRL as they did in MeTa meetup threads.

Impromptu Meetup? MetaFilter Approved rock opera-ers The Protomen performing a last-minute-announced show in Portland. Enough PDX fans to warrant a meetup? I'd hate to be the only person there spazzing out like the Jim Steinman obsessed fan of theatrical rock and the spectacle of The Protomen's live show, but I fear there are few 21+ fans of the band in the area. I hope to be proven wrong.
