Episode 46 of the podcast was recorded last week on October 27, 2009 (sorry about the delay getting it edited and out). We cover our favorites from Projects, Jobs, MeFi, Ask MeFi, MetaTalk and even throw in a few Music favorites.
QuizMe

It's time for yet another Metafilter quiz! Trivia site Sporcle (previ-ously) finally opened their quiz creation tool to the public and, inspired by good news for the insane's challenging 10th anniversary test, I decided to make one of my games dedicated to Mefi.

Mine's not nearly as difficult as GNFTI's, but does require a little more effort. Instead of multiple choice, you just type your answers into a text box, based on the categories and clues given below. If you type in a correct answer, it'll show up on the board. If not, just backspace and try something else. There are seventy answers in all (plus a few seekrit invisible bonus slots that only show up if you guess the right thing).

When you're done, click "See the Most Missed" to view charts of how often each answer was guessed and how you did in comparison to everyone else who took the quiz.

(And once you start, make sure not to go back to Mefi until you're done, as a few questions depend on memory of what the site looks like.)

Mark as Read

Yet-Another-Mefi-Mail-Pony: "Mark as Read" button in e-mail notification. So, I get my MeFi Mail sent to my e-mail address. Even when I read it there, though, I have to click onto the MeFi Mail box and read it again in order to mark it as read. Is there any way to have a "mark as read" button in the e-mail notification, or automatically mark as read all MeFi Mail sent by e-mail or something like that?

Apologies for the 27 millionth MeFi Mail pony request. I just have a pathological need to get rid of the number next to my mail icon.

Bringin' it old-school.

Birthday thoughts from an old-timer. Think it was Lance Arthur, on the old-old-old Glassdog, who linked to MeFi and naturally, as a duly-devoted Web Follower I logged on, got an account and thought nothing of it. Later, as "blogs" stopped being some arcane buzzword and became a reality, I would find myself coming to Metafilter more and more often. It became a crash pad, a place to find some commonality and actually feel like you were in a crowd on the Web.

Kaycee Nicole, the 2000 election, 9/11: these are the most intense periods of Metafilter activity I remember. Afterwards, the entire web became one huge reptilian brain stem, and a place where horribly intelligent people were screaming at each other about the end of the world was too much too handle. Still, though, even in my periods of fallow activity, I would check out links that people would bring in and was always struck by just how much knowledge and experience was actually here, diligently catalogued by its users.

Now don't get me wrong: you're all crazy. Out of your damn minds. But here Metafilter stands, ten years on, which is downright Paleozoic and also heroic. I have parodied it (which got noticed) and I have vented my frustrations, but I just wanted to thank MeFi for being here, because the Web is so much better for it. I also want to thank and congratulate Matt on what really is an amazing achievement. Metafilter's now officially an institution; long may she stand. Er, run. On servers. Which stand.

Which location will be noted for having the latest-starting MetaFilter 10th anniversary celebration? It says July 17th - 19th. What I want to know is which one is the latest starting MeFi anniversary celebration? The last one to begin to close out the holiday? (Note: This is not to say the latest running, as I realize some may turn into week-long bacchanalias of epic 10th anniversary, in-joking proportions.)

Hilarity ensued. There were all sorts of conversations that went something like this:

Some guy: "So you like the Mets, huh?"
Me: "Not really. I'm a Red Sox fan, actually."
Some guy: "So why are you... oh."
[awkward pause]
Some guy: "What the hell does THAT mean."

The alternate (and less common) conversation was a little more awkward.

Some guy: [stares at my boobs]

But I'm used to that one anyway.

Scaavy

I'd like to organize a 1st Annual Great Mefi Scavenger Hunt Teams of 6-8 people, digital camera, and list of flash mob-type activities (form the longest conga line, reenact any scene from any movie, etc.) to accomplish within an allotted time. Then meet up at a lounge, hang out, drink, and watch all the movies and cast votes, with prizes for the top teams.

Wouldn't be limited to Mefites (bring all the friends you want), or come by yourself and form a team on the spot.

SF Bay Area (probably organized somewhere around the Haight), sometime around late Summer.

So a couple things for people who might know a little bit more about this sort of project...

What sort of legal ramifications could I be responsible for? Would I need people to sign waivers of some kind? What other issues may arise?

A lot to take on solo, who'd enjoy helping me on such a task?

DrossFilter - brute force thread cleanser

As a bit of a brain saver I've made a GreaseMonkey script that hides every comment in a discussion on mefi that has less than 5 favourites. It was the anencephalic baby thread that drove me to it.

I was thinking about writing a snark filter, but, you know, natural language parsing and all that, so I decided to make it simple and dumb. And it works. Only quality snark makes it through.

And if you ever find yourself thinking "I can't believe I just spent thirty minutes reading 180 comments about W, which was mainly X, Y and Z bitching", you might also find it handy.

Naturally, if you wish to fully participate in a thread you will have to turn the script off.

Here is the script. It is based on someone else's script that highlighted favourited comments.

Future developments I will never get around to implementing:

Scale the cut-off point to the length of the thread

Add a show all comments button

I was doing a little digging around the MeFi archives today and found a great post on pre-cinema devices from madamjujujive. A few comments into the post snez drops in all disappointed, saying he'd been working on a pre-cinema post himself. He then goes ahead and contributes everything he'd been working on, effectively making a post within a post.

I've definitely seen this type of thing before, though I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head and can't imagine how to find more on my own. So I'm asking, Do you know of other similar occurences?

Best of MeFi

Where do I find a "best of MeFi" - i.e. collected AskMes as they can be found on the MeFi Wiki? As I'm just starting out I would like to dig deep in the MeFi Archives but have found no reliable way to do so (short of knowing exactly what to look for).

I am specifically looking for threads on the favorite resources MeFis to utilize when embarking on research projects. I am a little reluctant to post this considering the fact that this must have been asked before. I searched extensively but just couldn't find anything to fit my bill.

Thx a lot!

Matthias

Fantasy Baseball, anyone? In years past, the various MeFi fantasy baseball leagues have filled up fast. In the interest of keeping this to one post and hopefully having room for everyone this year, mkultra, drezdn, and I have collaborated to set up a few different fantasy leagues for the enjoyment of MeFi.
The league settings are as follows (choose wisely):

mkultra will be hosting a 5x5 Roto league (this is the main MeFi league from previous years) of 14 teams. mkultra has graciously offered 2 $25 Amazon gift certificates as prizes in this league--one for the winner, and one for the most improved team after the all-star break.
drezdn will be hosting the same custom 20-team H2H league that was the MeFi/MeCha league last year.
I will be hosting an NL-only 5x5 Roto league of 12 teams. I will also offer 2 $25 Amazon gift certificates as prizes.
mkultra has also offered to host an AL-only 5x5 Roto league if there is enough interest.

If you would like to play, MeMail the host of the league you would like to join. Please join only one league at first; we'll make an announcement if there are more spots available after the initial rush.

December Awesome Post Contest

A couple years back we did a best post contest in December (winners here). A couple days ago, anotherpanacea suggested we do it again, and it sounded like a good idea, so yeah, consider this the announcement of a December 2008 Awesomest Post of the Official Recession Contest. With Prizes. It'll be much the same as last time, make awesome posts to MeFi, and near the end of the month, me, jessamyn, and cortex will come up with our own personal top 3-5 posts we liked. We'll confer and likely figure out which ones showed up on everyone's lists and pick out the order as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. We may even record the conversation for an early January podcast so you know our thinking on these things.

It's basically make a great post -- and that's a nebulous thing that usually means awesome interesting out of the way sites and subject matter. It could be a one-line post, it could be a wikipedia-esque monster post, but good stuff is what we're after. We won't go off raw favorites counts alone, but we of course always check the popular favorites to guide us towards what the community likes best (but there's no reason to game it and sign up 10 accounts to post fake favorites to your thing because your post still has to be awesome to win).

For prizes, I'll do like last time (mostly iPods) with some other options. So how about this for prizes:

1st: iPod Touch (16Gb model) or $299 cash or $299 donated to Creative Commons

2nd: iPod Nano (16Gb) or $199 cash or $199 donated to CC

3rd: iPod Shuffle (2Gb) or $69 cash or $69 donated to CC

Sound good? Great, post your best stuff this month for everyone to enjoy.

Jumping the snark I'm new to MeFi, mainly posting in AskMe (it's fascinating). Today I came across something I thought was interesting, posted it up, and copped some flak. Is it 'cause I unwittingly picked a topic there'd been three threads about before, because I inserted a link to a blog I like as a 'bonus', or just a different style (copped a comment on the structure of my post intro). I've lurked a bit and post a lot on a UK current-affairs messageboard which is pretty cutthroat at times - is it just MeFi takes a bit longer to settle into? And yeah, I'm aware there are people online who just like a good ol' bitch. I like it here and I wanna stick around a bit.

a poster posted by a poster

I'm trying to track down a post about a poster. About a year ago or so, there was a post on the blue about a poster highlighting all of the mistakes and scandals of the Bush Adminstration. If I recall correctly, the poster was created by a bunch of graphic designers, and the outcome was quite striking: black and white with a list of words like "Katrina" and "Abu Ghraib." I've tried searching the archives but can't find it anywhere. If anyone remembers the poster I'm referring to and can find the link to the post, that would be splendid. Thanks!

Ok. So, lets get two things straight-
a) i am a looooong time lurker.
b) i have just finished reading Anantham by Neal Stephenson.
I distinctly (DISTINCTLY!!) remember reading a post about this book and its idea of quantum consciousness, but deliberately (DELIBERATELY!!!) avoided it due to a wish to avoid spoilers. So, i ask two things-

a) did this thread exist, or did i imagine it? (should the affirmative be affirmed, please take heed that i used all my google-fu to find this this thread to no effect...)
b) look, we've got freakin' blogspot blogs listin' metafilter's deleted threads. Can we not register 'worstoftheweb.com' or 'deleterfilter.com' and make these threads searchable...

Keep on rockin'. MeFi is the best ON the web.
