effbot's passing

Hi All, I see he hasn't been active here since 2017(?) but since he was a member for so long, I wanted to share what I just saw on reddit. python mailing list announcement from Guido "A former core dev who works at Google just passed the news that Fredrik Lundh (also known as Effbot) has died."

Find this Metafilter novelist

Yesterday, I was hanging out on the site, and in a conversation about the pandemic, a Mefite mentioned having written a book, and feeling like it was published into the abyss because of the pandemic. Several people piped up to say they had just bought a copy. I would like to find that thread, or that Mefite. [more inside]

Writers of MeFi Represent!

I often see AskMeFi requests for book recommendations, especially now that so many people are in Lockdown. I'm often in a bind because I think my own books would be a good fit, but it seems spammy to recommend them :) How about we create a thread here where the writers of MetaFilter can showcase our books?

Mention what kind of books we write, and put a few links in to where they can be bought or downloaded. Sound like a plan?

Coronavirus check-in thread #4

It is March 39th and time for the latest check-in thread. As previously ([3][2][1]) this is for actual news, updates, personal experiences, and more mutual support from and to people dealing with this virus in their daily lives. All hail the mods for continuing to provide this sanctuary for us, and good health to readers and commenters alike. How is one doing?

MetaFilter Helps Solve Half Remembered Book Mystery

On April 22, 2019, "An Interview with Mefi's Own Jessamyn" was posted on MeTa by Stanczyk. During the interview Jessamyn said,"we let you read whatever the heck you want, even if you’re a kid" and that reminded me of a book I had tried to find for years, that I had checked out in the mid 60s when I was about 12. MeFi comments added to subject of FPP

Last April, I posted a FPP on Down the Rabbit Hole, a site collecting observations about estranged parent support forums. The FPP went really well and generated some really good discussion. Today, I glanced at Down the Rabbit Hole and noted that the author had added FAQs, including some of the questions that MeFites had had about the original post. One of them prominently cites MeFi's own robot-hugs' comment as a partial answer to the question "where are the estranged fathers?"

How do *you* pronounce 'MeFi'?

Hi MeFites. After many years of overthinking a plate of beans, I made a thing! I'm pleased to share my PhD dissertation about MetaFilter with you all. A simple question of how we pronounce our own nickname has unfolded into many years of research. This time spent would not have been as enriching or meaningful to me and to the field of sociolinguistics without the support and enthusiasm of my fellow MeFites. I say I made a thing, but really, you made this. Thank you. [more inside]

MeFites, What Purse Do You Carry?

Because we are having great fun in this thread sharing links to cool purse sites, and we have been talking about the Meaning Of Purses, and in the past we have done desks: What purse do you carry, and what story does it tell about you? LINKS OR PICS PLZ. What important things does it carry? Gentlemen, you are welcome to share your manbags or fancy wallets, but you must agree to ooh and ahh over purses. Dr Strauss says I shoud rite down what I think and remembir.

According to the responses to this AskMe question, MetaFilter is home to 15+ regular users who score at least three standard deviations away from the mean on IQ tests (in the positive direction). And, moreover, these extraordinary savants monitor AskMe systematically enough to pick out questions relevant to their stratospheric intellects, and they are happy to discuss their lot (some via sock puppets). I think that we, the MeFi userbase, should be proud to share the company of so many outstandingly gifted individuals, and that this is truly one of the things that makes MeFi such an extraordinary online community.

Indoctrinating the Next Generation

While the recent Mefite baby boom is wonderful (and adorable), I thought everyone might like to know that the slightly-older Hive-Spawn are progressing nicely, too:

2012 MetaFilter Survey & Research Discussion Thread

Hi MeFites! This is the discussion thread for the 2012 MetaFilter Pronunciation Survey, available for 5 days to all logged-in site users. Even if you already took the 2010 survey, it'd be valuable to have you do it again. Additionally, this time around all survey participants will have the option to have a word frequency table of their MetaFilter posting history generated and emailed to them. If you would like to take the 2012 survey, I would ask that you please do so BEFORE you read or participate in the discussion here (as well as before you view the previous MetaTalk thread about the 2010 survey). This is to help ensure that your responses to these survey questions are entirely your own decisions and are not influenced by the opinions of those participating in this thread. If you have already taken the 2012 survey or are not interested in taking the survey but would like to discuss it, please go ahead and do so here. [more inside]

Please help me collect some meta MeTa Data data. Ta! –Me.

Hi Everybody! I'm trying to come up with a "MeFi glossary of terms / phrases / behaviors" to include in my PhD dissertation about linguistics and MetaFilter. If you could help me with this, that would be fantastic. I'm looking to create a list of the types of things that say to you (or to others) "Oh, that's so MetaFilter!" or "That sounds like something a MeFite would say." This could be anything from the use of a single character to a phrase or meme, to a way of doing things here. If you can think of something to add, please share it in the comments. Thanks! The Mefite Library: Books By Mefites

The Mefite Library: Some of you might know that I'm a book editor. I was very excited to see so many books in the holiday shop, but I was also a little sad that mefites who have a hand in creating books in other ways aren't represented. So, I'm starting a page (on the wiki for now) to collect links to books that mefites have written, edited, been anthologized in, or otherwise created. (Have a book of your photography or art? MetaFilter on the grid

World Community Grid celebrates its sixth birthday today. WCG is a distributed computing project that allows participants to donate unused cycles on their home or business machines, and to designate the scientific project which will use those cycles. Since its inception, the 43,000 members of WCG have processed 110,000 years of donated time and have provided 200 million results to the research teams involved. The MetaFilter team is responsible for slightly more than 8.5 years of donated computer time and about 12,500 results. [more inside]
