Can't see Metafilter posts on my iPhone

I have an iPhone 6S running iOS 9.3.5 I can't see the comments in Metafilter posts. All other sites seem to display properly, with the exception of one I can think of where an option button appeared on others' phones but not mine. I am logged in. I have tried different Metafilter display preferences. What gives? [more inside]

120: Hard Out There For A Nerd

Coming down the pipe a little late because summer scheduling is complicated, Jessamyn and I catch up on MetaFilter, MeFites getting married, MeFites going camping, MeFites arguing about stuff, and all the other things the doldrums of August bring with. This episode is about an hour and forty minutes and covers August 4th through September 7th. [more inside]

119: We're Very Helpful You're Here

Jessamyn and I take a break from house guests and election madness, respectively, to chatter about great stuff on MetaFilter from July 2nd through August 4th. We also take a super quick guided meditation break in the middle! We both ate our figurative Wheaties; this episode comes in at a fulsome hour and fifty-two-ish minutes. [more inside]

"...the irrelevant, the tangential, the sidebar excursion to nowhere..."

Just wanted to give a shoutout to whoever has been keeping the "New & Noteworthy" well-stocked with excellent bits and bobs from across the MeFi world. With horrid ongoing world events and super-bad news seemingly daily, taking a moment to check out something awesome means a lot. Plus it's easy to miss cool items from across the evolving MeFiverse. ...and introducing Baby McGee as "baby"

Hey! Say hello to Eyebrows McGee's brand new daughter, Anna Lucia. Seven pounds, five ounces; nineteen inches bow to stern; conspicuous lack of eyebrows but we'll let that slide until at least Q4. Here's mother and daughter, chillin'.

Contact form bumpiness

Just a quick heads up: we've had a little trouble with some of our email list stuff recently; some contact form messages haven't gotten through in the last 2-3 days. Should be rectified soon, and now that we're aware we can get at the messages server-side so we can respond promptly and catch up on the backlog, but if you were getting radio silence over the weekend that's what's been up. Sorry about that!

Moderators' Day 2016 GET HYPE

Back in 2007 your humble narrator suggested, near the end of a rather challenging day at the comment factory, that we remember and honor June 13th as Moderators' Day henceforth-ish. Please join me in thanking all of our mods - past and present - for the hard and often thankless job they do every day to make MetaFilter one of the best places on the Internet. Thank you cortex, restless_nomad, taz, LobsterMitten, goodnewsfortheinsane, Eyebrows McGee, and vacapinta. Welcome and thank you to our new coder frimble, and special thanks to our moderators emeriti, jessamyn, mathowie, and pb. [more inside]

This episode is jessamyn, me, and a collective inability to stay focused, as we discuss hiring frimble, choosing usernames, beverage routines, hidden double-reverse-sexism in Wikipedia charts, how to hand change to a customer, and also some stuff about MetaFilter. This episode covers May 3 through June 2 and runs just under two hours. [more inside]

"You were accidentally put in the bad pile.”

It’s funny. I was at the first XOXO, I give a talk about like “Hell, I don’t know, but it seems like the weather’s changing and this might be the sunset for blogs.” It was a really depressing talk. At the end I was like, “Maybe there will still be opportunities?” but two weeks later I woke up and the site was making half as much money overnight. -- Behind the scenes at Metafilter with former Maximum Leader mathowie.

Go on, spill it.

Everyone is most likely familiar with the Profile page's "About" section explanatory text: "What's the deal with your nickname? How did you get it? If your nickname is self-explanatory, then tell everyone when you first started using the internet, and what was the first thing that made you say 'wow, this isn't just a place for freaks after all?' Was it a website? Was it an email from a long-lost friend? Go on, spill it.' I am curious if anybody's user name actually WAS inspired by an email from a long-lost friend. [more inside]

Amazon referral links in FPPs

So, today I posted about the upcoming new Santana album. It's amazing. It comes out next week. It is available for preorder on Amazon and I have preordered it. Also was a Carly Rae Jepsen link about a single off her new album. It was amazing. I preordered it. Should we, when we compose posts like these, include a link to an Amazon order page so MeFites who want to also purchase these things can give MetaFilter a bit of a kickback? Or is that too commercial?

Should Debates (and other unique events) be diverted to Fanfare?

Currently things like political debates (and similar unique events, such as Apple announcements) tend to play out in related threads on the Blue. Since that just adds to (usually) already-long threads, wouldn't it make sense to require that dedicated posts be made on the Purple? (I'm not alone in thinking so.)

Antivirus won't let me connect with Blue or Green

This is the only way my ESET NOD32 Antivirus program will let me communicate with MF right now. Whenever I try to open something on MeFi or AskMeFi -- or the Contact a Moderator page -- I get a notice that the connection has been terminated because of a JS/ScrInject.B trojan. Out of the Blue, episode #2: On emotional labor, with Jess Zimmerman

On July 13th, the writer Jess Zimmerman posted “Where’s My Cut?”: On Unpaid Emotional Labor on The Toast, an essay about how and why emotional work is often undervalued and treated as "women's work". Or, more to the point, not even work: just something women are inherently supposed to do. It's a good piece, and what it spawned was even more interesting: a huge, revelatory MetaFilter thread in which site members, women in particular, talked about all the ways this asymmetry and devaluation of emotional labor has affected their lives and their relationships.
