Have you gotten your MeFi Swap mixes yet? Are they awesome? Have you found new favorite songs? My own mix is made, and the CDs are in a pile on my bookcase waiting to be burned. As soon as I have the time to make the booklet, they'll be burned and out of here.

Let's swap mixes. Sign up for the 2013-1 MeFiSwap inside! 80 minutes - 700MB - 5 discs - 6 swappers The constraints of MeFiSwap are perhaps old-fashioned. Trading music. Physical media. (Remember tapes? We're not that old-fashioned.) The post, ha! But the thrill of 5 mixes from 5 fellow MeFites is still just as good. It's in the appreciation of careful track order, the wonder at a beautiful package, and the thrill of envelopes addressed to you (or just your username ;) showing up in your mailbox. This is why we swap. Ahem, so anyway, here's what's going on: Basics 1. Sign up to swap! (see below) 2. Make a mix of music you'd like to share and burn 5 copies of it to CD-R 3. Go to the post office and mail those mixes to your swapset. 4. Collect awesome mixes from your mailbox, and listen to them! Guidelines (pretty important) - You must be a MetaFilter member to participate. - If you sign up to participate in this swap (see below) you agree to participate in good faith and mail out 5 mix CDs to your swapmates by the mailing deadline. - If you have signed up to participate in a previous swap and then neglected to participate aside from collecting mixes from your swapmates, then you are not invited to participate again and go into the 'Damned Mooch' column of my list. Yes, I keep a list. And I check it all the damn time*. - Swapsets consist of 6 people (you + the five recipients of your mix). - We swap audio CD-Rs. As I've hinted, this is old-fashioned. The modern Internets have made sharing music with the people in your social circles very easy. Doing it with the post and physical media is not as easy. But this is how we do. - The swap is international. You will likely have to mail at least one of your mixes overseas. This comes with a financial burden, so please take that into consideration before you sign up (see below). Deadlines - I'm closing sign-ups in about 2 weeks, on Sunday, January 27th. Please sign up by then (see below). Swapset assignments will go out shortly thereafter. - The mailing deadline is the end of February, 2013. That's Thursday the 28th. FAQ - I am very happy with how much smaller this block of text is. I should rewrite more often. For lots of frequently asked questions and their oft-given answers, please see previous sign-up threads. So, you'd still like to sign up? OK! It's easy! See below: 1. MeFiSwap 2012-2, The Swappening, is almost over! I'm on my way to the post office this afternoon to mail out my mixes, and I can't wait to dig in to all the mixes from the (put-together, ahead-of-the-game, super-awesome) swappers who have already mailed out. If you're signed up to swap, the mailing deadline is tomorrow, Saturday, July 21! Have you mailed out already? How did your mix turn out? How are the mixes you've gotten so far? Did you miss sign-ups this time? Want to swap the next time around? Don't press your luck guessing when sign-ups will open—

Hi if you're interested in making a mix of some music, burning it to a CD-R, and mailing it to 5 other MeFites, I'm interested in facilitating your experience. Come inside for the MeFiSwap 2012-2 details. Somewhere in this huge block of text I tell you how to sign up for the swap.

Swap Guidelines:

Swapsets consist of 6 MeFites. You make and mail out 5 copies of your mix to the other swapset members, and in return you get 5 different mixes mailed to you.
We swap audio CD-Rs. Your swapmates should be able to put the disc you send them into just about any CD player and have it work. If you want to swap data discs (loaded with .mp3s or whatever filetype is dominant this year) or tapes or 8-tracks something and enough are interested, I can set up a side-swap. This has yet to happen as there has been little interest thus far. Please do not send any media other than a music CD-R without running it by your swapset first. This swap is old-school in this regard, it is known and noted that in our modern age there are more convenient ways to swap music. For the purposes of this swap, however, CD-Rs and snail mail are the rule.
If you sign up to participate for this swap, you agree to participate in good faith and mail out 5 mix CDs to your swapmates within ~6 weeks from today.
If you signed up to participate last time (or a time before) but didn't mail out your mix, you are not invited to swap again you damned mooch! However, if you'd like to attempt to get a swap out to your old swapset and regain eligibility please email me and we can talk.
If you didn't get all 5 mixes in a previous swap please email me so I can keep track of who's eligible to swap again and who's not.
You will probably have to send at least one piece of mail overseas, and if you live outside the USA, you will most definitely be asked to mail most of your packages to foreign countries. Please do not sign up to participate if you are not prepared to mail 5 packages out.
Communication is important so if you can't get your mixes out by the mailing deadline (see below), let me or the other members of your swapset know! Don't just disappear cuz that sucks.

Sign-ups close in ~2 weeks on Saturday, June 16. Swapset assignments will go out shortly thereafter via email.
The mailing deadline is almost two months away, on Saturday, July 21. However, the sooner you mail out your mixes, the better!

Some FAQ

What should I put on my mix? → Music! Music you love! Music you think people should hear. Music that sounds good!
Is there a theme? → Yes! It's music! I mean, no! There's no theme except the one you choose. Even though swapset names might have a theme, that shouldn't necessarily dictate the theme of your mix.
How do I package and mail these mixes? → Padded mailers work best (and recycled ones even better!) but, as long as you can rest assured that your delicate CD-Rs will arrive at their destination in playable condition, pretty much anything goes.
Do I need to include liner notes? → You don't need to do anything other than mail 5 mixes to your swapmates, but putting some effort into making it look nice is certainly not discouraged. ;)

The Extended Remix MefiSwap 2012-1

Happy Friday! It's time to sign up for the no-stress extended remix MeFiSwap! So you make a mix. Of music. (On the already-antiquated CD-R medium.) And you mail it out to 5 other MeFites. And those 5 do the same thing, so 5 mixes show up in your mailbox soon. And everyone's happiness is increased by 5 mixes. [THIS IS GOOD.]

Holy smokes, I just got my first MeFiSwap mix CD in the mail yesterday!
Reminder: the mailing deadline is in one week, Saturday, January 23. Have you received mixes? Have you sent out yours already? Make sure you let your swapset know (you should have everyone's email via your swapset assignment email) and feel free to tell us here how your swap is panning out. If you can't mail out by the deadline, please notify your swapset so there isn't any confusion about your participation. If a member of your swapset doesn't participate, please let me know via email (EIP) and I will mark them as banned from further swaps. Questions? Help? You listen to good music. You pick some of it out, and you put it in a certain order, and you listen to your mix all the time. It's good! It sounds good, too good to keep to yourself. So you burn 5 copies of your mix to CD and you put 'em in the mail. Soon 5 different discs containing 5 different mixes from 5 other people appear in your mailbox, and this is good because you're tired of listening to the mix you made and some new tunes from cool MeFites is just the right thing.

This is just a friendly reminder from your local swap organizer that mixes need to be mailed out no later than August 15. (You should also have a fresh email reminder from me...my last group communique until next swap.) MeFiSwap Summer '09
Believe it or not, it's been about that long. Let's mail each other good music. I think these work best if some guidelines are set out right at the beginning:

Email me at tediseasy asper@nd gmail stop. com if you would like to participate. Please include your mailing address and your username. If you would prefer not to use email, memail me. However, things are much simpler from an organizational standpoint if I can use the robust features afforded by email rather than barebones memail, so email is preferred.
Sign-up deadline is 2 weeks from today, July 12th.
If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to set up side swaps for tapes or whatever (how many of you cut vinyl?), but let's stick to swapping CDs for the most part and mixes of music for sure (not teddy bears or tshirts or wevs).
If you signed up to participate last time but didn't mail out your mix, you are not invited to swap again. If you sign up to participate this time, do so with the full intention of mailing out at least 5 mix CDs. You may be asked to mail overseas (and if you live outside the USA, you will most definitely be asked to mail packages to foreign countries). Once sign-ups are closed, everyone will be broken up into swapsets. Swapsets are ideally 6 members big, so each swapper will mail out 5 copies of their mix. If you're in the mood to mail out more (and receive more in return!), lemme know in the email.

MeFi Winter CD Swap reminder!
Hey swappers, the deadline to mail your mixes is one week from today, January 20th. If you can't mail out by next Monday, please let the rest of your swapset know. I am willing to pass on any messages as well. My own mix is just about finished; as soon as it's unleashed upon my fakebandmates I'll post a link here to a digital copy (for anyone who didn't/couldn't participate but still sorta wants to).

Hey, anybody wanna swap Muxtapes? ...Oh.
Well, how about another MeFi CD swap? It's been a while since we've mailed each other shiny discs of mix, and I'm itching for that wonderful feeling at the mailbox. (Plus, thanks to AskMe my digital music collection is finally all in one place and organized!) So let's swap. Last year 'round this time ND¢ proposed a swap twisted to only include music from 2007 (The Best of 2007). I'd like to go back to a free-for-all this time around. Swappers have been consistently impressive over the years when coming up with their own mix themes, and I figure Best of 2008 is still applicable if you want; it's just not required. Send the music you're listening to, and the music you love. A couple of questions come up every time. Who's organizing? I would be happy to, though I can't promise Dreama-level organization. I'll probably just keep track of everything on paper and email swap sets out. Sets are ideally six people big (everyone sends out 5 discs). International swappers will probably be mailing to the USA. I'm kind of excited about organizing this, having participated over the past 5 or 6 years, but if anyone else has a burning desire to step up and put everything together, that's fine. What do I send? Generally I've received single CD mixes in slimline jewel cases. Liner notes have ranged from nothing at all through single-page hand-written tracklist all the way to elaborately designed liner booklets. They usually come in padded mailers. Can we trade tapes instead of CDs? It's a CD swap. I suppose if five or six people pipe up wanting to trade tapes they could be a separate group, but I'd prefer we stick to burned CDs. What about digital mixes? Why don't we just leave the dirty, expensive hassle of snail mail and send each other archive folders? My main reason for wanting to keep it dirty is sentimental: I love getting mail. Even more, I love getting mail with music CDs inside. One thing that worked really well last year was to have a follow-up thread where everyone who mailed discs posted their tracklists and maybe a link to that downloadable archive of the mix. People who don't want to (or can't) swap via mail can still join in at the end. How come I didn't get mixes from everybody in my group? It happens sometimes, for whatever reason, that not all the mixes make it out. It's sad, it's disappointing, and it's a risk you take by participating. People flake, forget, or simply can't get life out of the way long enough to mail strangers music. So I'm doing a cursory reading back through old swap threads; as usual the people who didn't send out mixes after saying they would in the past won't be in this swap. Is there a deadline? I suggest a couple deadlines. First, swap sets will be determined and mailed out by December 1st. That leaves 3 weeks for interested parties to sign up. Then how about January 20th, Inauguration Day, for a mailing deadline? That give about a month and a half to get 'em together and out into the world. This looks like the longest thing I've written on MeFi, so I'll stop now. Suggestions? Still interested? Who's up for some new music?

Does anyone have info about the latest, greatest MeFi swap? There hasn't been any new updates on their site, and the "sending of the swapsets" date has come and gone. What gives?
