Meetup in Ottawa?
Those of you putzing around on MeMu know I am heavily into folksongs and folk singing. This Thursday at 7:30 pm I am hosting a song session at Rasputin's in Ottawa (696 Bronson, for those of you who live here). The focus will be strongly towards accapella song, whether in groups or solo, and there will (hopefully) be singing from as many different musical traditions as we can manage.
Since I'm new here, I'd love the opportunity to meet some local Mefites; I thought this would be a fantastic excuse for a meetup. No singing is required, I'll only ask that you don't talk when someone is singing, out of respect for the singer.
So, are there any Mefites in Ottawa interested in coming down to Rasputin's on Thursday? I'd love to meet you!

So, the call went out, and the call was answered: we got us some fine and snakey new songs around MeFi Town. 'Bout half as many as poured in for the previous water theme, but I reckon that's to be expected, sophomore slump and all. Just wondering, now that we're two days past the serpentine deadline, what's the next MeFi Music Challenge, admins?
Using music from music.mefi
I want to use a song from Music.Mefi, but the creator (Vicarious) doesn't have an e-mail!!! Is there any way to contact said creator, or maybe the musicians could add a creative commons tag so others could use their work, and attribute appropriately?
I wanted to use the song in a video that I'm making.

I seem to remember an AskMe post regarding the bell-like, bubble-ish synth noises that Radiohead (and others) coax from their machinery, and how to replicate them, but i cant find the post using my limited google/AskMe-fu. Anyone remember this and can point me in the general direction?

I once found (and bookmarked) this page of all of chococat's music. I like it because it has the little flash player, so I can listen to all of his tunes. How do I get to the same kind of page for other MeFi Musicians? I've tried looking on members' profile pages, but the link to all of their songs goes to the music parts of their Activity pages. Thanks.

Meta Music filter. As a newbie, I was a touch underwhelmed by the recent song challenge. "The theme of water" seems so broad as to be kind of, well, boring. Why not 'love' or 'nature' or 'loneliness.' Might I suggest something a bit more kooky, esoteric, and actually challenging for the next one. Something along the lines of, "you make me touch your hands for stupid reasons." (via)
Maybe nothing that gimmicky, but come on! Can't we do better?

Song Challenge
I have an idea for a songwriting competition, and I think the musicians here are talented enough (and have the know-how / equipment) to pull it off. On a weekly or bi-weekly basis, someone (the winner of the last round) could post a challenge (ex: an old-school country waltz about flowers), then everyone who wants to compete could post their songs and the MeFites could vote. Opinions?

At MeFiMusic, adding individual songs from other users' playlists to ones' own, or otherwise favoriting tracks looks time consuming. How about 2.0/itunes/etc style 'starring' beside the trackname to add a filter-layer for favourite/playlisting?

I need help with a popular song for the late 80s / early 90s. A chanting song, with monks in the background and a woman repeating latin sayings. Can you help? I tried Chant, but that's not the right album.

2-3 weeks ago I posted a song to music. It's no longer there. I assume it was deleted. Of course, there was a perfectly good reason why it was deleted. It would be nice if you notified me of this action, the reason why, and allow me to respond before the action was taken.

Mefi Music Playlist and Issues
Two requests for Mefi Music:
1. It would be nice to have usernames on the tag results page. (e.g. acoustic) This would help users find other songs by the same artist.
2. The frontpage tends to load my system because of all of the flash files. Would it be possible to have everything show up on one playlist like the "tagged with" pages or the user pages? [mi]

Can I Legally Post This To MeFi Music?
Sometime in the early nineties a now long lost friend of mine recorded a cd. I can't seem to locate him and it's been quite a few years since we last talked. I found a copy of his cd and want to post a few of his songs to MeFi Music. (I love the cheesy pop-techno sound of a few of these tunes and the memories they bring back.)
I "played" on stage with him (keyboard flourishes...very minimal playing on my part) and spent many hours in the studio with him on more than one occasion during the recording of said cd.
Given that information, would posting the songs be an OK thing to do? Are there legal issues?

What's the deal with posting songs on AskMeFi? I've contacted some users to ask if I can sample something of theirs, and while I have no problem doing this (and will continue to ask), I think it would be neat to be able to specific a creative commons (or other more restrictive) licenses. I know they could simply specify themselves, but it would be nice to make things unambiguous by default.
Not hugely important, but I think it would be helpful.

How to get a quick dose of Metafilter Music
What's the best way to listen to all the songs currently on the front page of music.metafilter.com as a continuous playlist? Any suggestions? Is there something I'm missing? If there really is no way to do this currently, could I suggest some dynamically generated playlist page, that operates like existing playlists, but takes you through, say, the last 50 tracks.

music problem: 50% of the time I try to upload a standard MP3 (ID3 v2.2), I get the following error: The MIME type of the uploaded file "application/x-octet-stream" was not accepted by the server.

Album art for your music downloads
I'm a bit obsessive about my album art, but I never had anything for the songs I've snatched from MeFi Music (chococat, I'm looking in your direction). So I whipped up a little something that I thought I'd share with the community. It's nothing special, but perhaps it will help fill out your Cover Flow.
Links from favorites (Music) to song broken
When checking any given user's favorites page, and if it's a song from MeFi Music that the person has favorited, going to the date/time stamp for that song post results not in arriving at the post, but rather with the message: "Error: File not found". Now, I see there was a thread concerning a problem with favorited comments from MeFi Music, so maybe this problem is just something still awaiting the necessary laying on of hands from # 1?

MeFi Music - is it only for music? I've been writing some short (>7 mins) stand-up skits recently, and was wondering if mp3's of same would be an acceptable music post, especially as the feedback would be extremely useful...

Music Guidelines
It says in bold that Mefi Music is a place for users to upload their own songs. I'm guessing that means original songs written by the user are being encouraged in order to avoid copyright infringement...? What about songs that aren't copywritten or are in the public domain, though? Are musicians welcome to post cover versions of old songs if royalty issues aren't a concern? Curious.

When I was younger I entered a lot of bi-weekly music competitions. During the first week people would make songs using only a provided pack of samples. The people who entered would vote on the best ones the second week. It gave me a lot of practice, I met a lot of new people, and it was fun. How about something similar for MetaFilter Music?
