Octothorpe/Ampersand Substitution Mayhem

When I'm logged out, the link here works correctly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=misN2jbpo1Y#t=1m05). When I'm logged in, the site has converted the hash to an ampersand (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=misN2jbpo1Y&t=1m05). I imagine this is a bug related to the inline YouTube player.

Gawker's horrible URLs

A pony request to fix a 3rd party's crappy website... Twice (1, 2) in the last 24 hours we've had posting linking to Gawker websites, where the horrible "#!" URL format they use breaks for anyone outside the USA.

Both threads have had partial derails as a result (and, yes, I know I was a part of one of them).

Removing those two characters from the URL means it redirects nicely for everyone - the USAian Mefites get redirected to a #! url and we forners get country code sub domains.

Is there any chance pb could automatically strip that #! from links to gawker network URLs?

Amazon long form URLs

Amazonian Pony. URL's with the book titles in? It it possible to use the long-form URLs from amazon that show the book title while retaining metafilters referrer code? Or is there a reason we don't do this? I often mouseover (especially on iphone or in instapaper versions) and am curious about the title of the book, but don't want to or cant open a new window.

Is the "http://metafilter.com/username.mefi/username" URL format broken? I've been using this URL format as a way to quickly find the profiles of users mentioned in threads when there wasn't a link provided for years now, but when I tried it a moment ago I was redirected to my own profile. Has this functionality been broken for a while, or did something change recently?

URL shorteners?

URL shorteners in FPPs? Are we OK with FPPs via URL shortener? Is there an explicit policy about that? Maybe a static check for the common shorteners and a recommendation to link to the actual page could be added to the post form?

Not picking on this post, I just noticed it was a link to bit.ly and figured it would be worth clarifying.

Metafilter-only URL shortening with Mefi.us

A URL shortening service is closing shop, and though Twitter is seen as a terrible thing by some MeFites, plenty here use it. Echoing an overlooked comment signalnine, could the new static domain be set up as a MetaFilter-only link shortener? As it is, links can be easily shortened by lopping off the title text. For example,

http://www.metafilter.com/84010/They-said-it-would-happen

becomes

http://www.metafilter.com/84010/

If the service (or people copying links by hand) recognize it, the link could be shortened to

www.metafilter.com/84010

or

metafilter.com/84010

But we could take this further if mefi.us was used:

mefi.us/84010

This could also work with the sub-sites: ask.metafilter becomes a.mefi.us, projects is p.mefi.us, music to mu.mefi.us, metatalk is mt.mefi.us, etc.

URL problem in "my favorites"

There's a bug in the links on the MetaTalk "my favorites" tab.
Can I put this in my metafilter URL? I found an old myspace music page I put together a few years ago as a joke. All the songs are remixes of music from Star Wars movies and an MC Chris parody. I never expected it to last, and I was sure it would be deleted when Tom (the myspace overlord) realized that I had pirated music to my own page and it would be deleted. But it is still there. I was sure I canceled the account and I can no longer access it because the email I used to create it is long gone. I was wondering if I could link it to my metafilter profile page as my URL just for the hell of it?

Unicode? What, is that like a unisex haircut?

Punctuation simplification for URLs: ’ (closing quote used as apostrophe) becomes Unicode hex triplet 0xE2 0x80 0x99 in FF3 et al. I realize the necessity for Unicode characters (my last MeTa was on Unicode as well) in URI. However, there's a point where honoring typographic conventions just gets ugly: http://www.metafilter.com/76522/The-Internet-in-Canada%E2%80%99s-far-nortth. Note: I only tested this in FF3 on Linux.

Pro

Correcting doesn't cost that many cycles

Long URIs are for prettyprinting purposes anyway

Poster won't notice

Con

Not complete Unicode representation (dataloss)

Niche: (likely) only happens in this-gen browsers

Only copy-and-paste permalinkers bothered by this will notice

Just a nitpick (also: the default formatting for dl elements is kinda silly on here!)

slash the slash or drop the slash?

MeFi URL's don't work without a trailing slash in some cases. I've noticed that entering a thread URL by number only works when you include the trailing slash, BUT doesn't need the trailing slash when the title is included.

Example 1a: (this does work)
http://www.metafilter.com/19/

Example 1b: (this doesn't work)
http://www.metafilter.com/19

Example 2a: (this works)
http://www.metafilter.com/76317/Woah-Excellent

Example 2b: (this also works)

FYI

When I preview my inchoate FPP, the link search informs me that my links were found in three previous threads, but only sometimes. When those links are in the "description" box, the link search finds them in previous threads, but when I move some of my text (without altering it) to the "extended description" box, my next preview tells me that my URLs were not found in previous threads.

Unrelated: there is a "Link Preview," but no "Reception Preview." Please create a utility that tells me whether or not people will like my post. Thanks!

Preventing duplicates

New post form's URL search is broken. I made a double post yesterday. I searched for the URL in both the normal and printer friendly versions, using MetaFilter's new post form. In fact, if I go to the New Post form right now, and copy the link from Malor's original post, it reports: "The URLs you entered were not found in previous threads. You might want to check the search page for duplicates, just to be sure."

Of course, I did some additional searching, like using Google's link: feature (along with site:metafilter.com) which also turned up nothing. I also tried clicking on my tags, but apparently Malor and I have different taste in tags.

Summary: It's hard to avoid posting a double.

If this is unintended, I suggest one of the following: change the to the project URL, and have a link to the votes page at the end of the

; or keep the the same but repeat the title, with a link to the URL, at the start of the

.

Preventing mistakes in URLs

The person posting this today seems to have made similar mistakes in links as the person who posted this five days ago. Just wondering if the mistakes can be identified and better avoided.

Is there an automatic identical URL detector?

Facts On Farts was deleted within ten minutes of posting. In point of fact, the double post alluded to was all about turds. I checked it myself. Is there some sort of automatic feature that sniffs out identical URL's? Because this was in error, even though I was warned before posting that it looked like a duplicate (but wasn't). FWIW, the fart site actually was written to address a lot of things that any reasonable person might be curious about.

Profile URLs now going to names not numbers?

I keep a bookmark that ends in the spelled-out version of my username so that I can go to it and type out other users' names at the end if I don't know their user number. Tonight, going to it to find some other user's page, it took me to the page with the URL ending in my user number rather than the word "interrobang".

In the past couple of days, I've also "moused" over other people's names to see who they were--mainly in ask metafilter--and gotten the URL ending in the name spelled out rather than the number. Is this because the standard is soon going to be user pages with URLs ending in names, rather than numbers?

Expanding the URL search?

Very Small Pony: Matt, would it be possible to copy the code used for the URL search on the Post A Link page onto the Search page, so it could be accessed even if you have posted something within the past 24 hours?
