Happy birthday to us - four years old today! 18th November 2004 was the date that new accounts were made available again, after more than two years of no new signups* & enforced lurking for many of us. For others who came in from the cold on that day, birthday donuts all round!** * (apparently, there was some deal with 20 accounts per day - barely publicised & involving some arcane game of chance like trying at the stroke of midday, American time) ** (bring your own donuts)

Disabled accounts show up in "nearby users." I clicked on this profile and then had to click on this username (because, WTF? Was santorum taken?). Well, to make matters slightly weirder, a search for santorum brings up the username and the user's "real" name, though it's no longer visible in the profile.

Lately, I've noticed that quite a number of people whose presence I've enjoyed have disabled accounts. Are the majority of those people closing accounts leaving of their own accord?

Are there any Mefi user accounts that have a coincidental (or intentional) relationship with their user number? This comment by Burhanistan makes me wonder if there are any user accounts on Mefi that have some connection to their user number, either through serendipity (say, user numbers that are the same as one's zip code or date of birth) or by design, where they play off the name in a witty way (for example?). Also, now that Mefi is getting more and more members, and since the $5 fee turns many people away mid-signup, leaving many empty user profiles behind, how hard would it be to snag an "interesting" number? Is there even a way to keep track of the newest users, short of typing in higher and higher numbers after http://www.metafilter.com/user/ ? Will this "flaw" in the process that creates ever-larger swathes of nonexistent profiles ever be corrected?

I don't want to sign up for a youtube account. While I'm sure this is a lovely video, I have no interest in opening yet another internet account just to watch it. As such, this post is fairly inaccessible. The reason this is a MeTa instead of a flag-and-move-on is that I'm not sure whether youtube has become so ubiquitous that I just need to get over it and sign up for an account. What say ye, mefites?

Currently in beta: give a mefi account as a gift. I think all the bugs have been worked out. You put in your friend's email, pay the five bucks, and they'll get an email letting them pick a username, password, and other details. If you try it out, let me know if you or your friend gets any errors.

Ok, here's a question about AskMeFi questions: how come people are always asking questions "for a friend"? Is it that they are REALLY asking for themselves and pretending to ask on behalf of someone else? Or are people really that helpful? Am I a total jerk for thinking that if one of my friends wanted to post a question to AskMeFi I would tell them to create their own account, it's $5 for pete's sake? What piece of the puzzle am I missing here?!?
