I'm looking for an old metatalk thread about adblocking and host files. There was a thread about getting rid of ads and cookies and such, and a member created a host file and installer for dummies that blocked a lot of ad sites at host level. Using that and AdBlock Plus, surfing was awesome. Now I have a new netbook and I want to install that host file again, but I cant't find the post. IIRC there was a joke in the thread about the best ad remover for your computer being a ball peen hammer. Thanks for any help you can give.

Miracle Whip Zingr beta? That deserves a graphic ad on the front page, even when logged in? Did the advertising guidelines change recently? No its not a big deal, I'm a big boy and know how to avoid ads. But it sure struck me as odd and rather out of place.

"Metafilter Ad Appropriateness FAIL" I love duck hunt as much as the next guy, but maybe not right inside a thread like this one. I did some searching and couldn't find any previous threads on this topic, so what's the word with less than suitable ads in a given thread? Can/should anything be done about that?

Zombie Strippers!!!??!?! WTF? I just saw this ad for Zombie Strippers on the blue. It seems to be a new horror/porno film. I saw it as I was refreshing the page so I'm not sure about the URL of the ad. I like zombies and I like strippers. But mixed, on Mefi? No thanks.

MeFi is showing me a "surprise her... with a bigger penis" ad. She looks pretty surprised, but not as surprised as me. Can we not do this? I realise this is not on the level of Scientology or Suicide Girls in terms of potential offense, but this sort of stuff is a) bullshit, b) bogus, c) not a nice message to deliver to boy MeFites.

MeFi unwittingly (?) supporting Scientology? I was reading AskMe while not logged in and caught this Dianetics.org advert. Is this typical of acceptable ads or a fluke? If I my say so, it's a lotta bit icky.

Can we get a policy regarding the ads on Metafilter? specifically political and advocacy ads? I'm getting banners for pro-life schwag. I promise I'm not going to complain about banners advertising cereals, alcohol, tampons, cigarettes, ammonium nitrate and the likes but having a banner preach in a way that would get an FP killed seems like a (more or less) cheap endrun courtesy of the federated hucksters.

That's why they call it "work".

Just out of curiosity, what's the new flash component for? On each of the domains, except for podcast and music, there is now a flash something floating just over the sidebar. I only know because of flashblock. Unblocked, it quietly disappears. What is it/why is it there?

I realize a) that poolio asked for the delete and b) no context was provided and c) Geico is a Very Large Corporate Entity while Cal is a small-to-middlin Localish Character, but jesus christ, ads are ads. With all due respect to y2karl, the reason all those interesting videos of RnB and blues and country guys exist is that video or film exposure was seen (correctly) as a great way to build the artist's audience, thereby increasing sales. Geico is unique among current ubiquitous advertisers, maybe unique in the history of ubiquitous advertisers, and unquestionably has greenlit some of the strangest, most engaging, and unpredictable ads of all time. A comprehensive linkroundup of the spots is in and of itself of value, above and beyond the publicity benefit to Geico or controversy on MetaTalk. Poolio, I thought the Geico post was fucking great.

So whats with PageFlakes?

Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I am logged in and see ads from fmpub.net on the front page. The ad presently displayed invites me to "chew the fat at serious eats". It's the same ad after multiple refreshes also. While I am a fan of bacon, I don't normally see ads when I'm logged in. This is all the more curious given that I'm using adblock plus and don't usually see ads on any site. Is this a temporary thing, or is bacon now an integral part of the site?

Vox ads, even for members? I use the plain text theme and I see these ads on the front page of Mefi and AskMe.

I know this has come up before but I don't want to see any ads. That was one of my reasons for slapping my £2.69 on the barrelhead. As far as I can tell opinion seems to be fairly evenly split between members who don't want to see ads at all and those who don't mind. Therefore, please make a preference so that those who wish to see ads can see them (or vice versa, I don't give a monkey's).

So, Um, I'm logged in and I'm getting upper right graphical ads on MeFi and AxMe. Is that on purpose? Because, y'know, I thought the purpose of being logged in all the time and having an account was to not have to see ads, and I didn't see an announcement that they'd be starting. Then again, if it's necessary to pay for bandwidth, OK, but I'd prefer a donation drive.

I just bought Google ads on MetaFilter for one of the projects I've posted here (still valiantly trying to get the word out)...but I can't see the ads unless I log out. Is there a way for me to choose to see the ads when logged in? FWIW, I'd imagine that some of the MeFi supporters would be happy to see them as another way to support the site (I would, and do this on another site which I am a paying member).

I may be missing something obvious (checked previous metatalk queries) but this post has an advert in it shown in Firefox but not in IE. The advert is for www.ecological.co.uk. Is there a reason for it? I don't remember an adverts on/off feature.
