Extremely minor feature request: would it be possible to update Metafilter profiles for ASL-compliance per ISO standards? I just noticed that nowhere on the profile page is there a dedicated field for age. While one can (and I have) appropriate the ICQ# field or whatever for this purpose, it feels kind of weird that the profile supports the 'sex' and 'location' portions of the holy a/s/l trinity for Internet introductions, but not 'age'. Presumably the best way to handle this would be for the user to input birth date through three dropdowns and have the profile auto-update rather than the user (forgetting to) set it manually each birthday. If you wanted to go really nuts you could toss a tiny (MeFiMail-size) icon of a birthday cake next to the names of users on their birthdays.

So I keep noticing thousands of new usernames in comment threads (which is awesome), and I got to wondering about how user age/contribution patterns were evolving on a threadwise level with the new users settling in. Being a non-statistician, I didn't care enough to perform a serious study, so I just threw together a little bookmarklet that tells you the average user age contributing to the page. It's totally worthless, but a bit of fun.

Old farts; hippies; soixante-huitards; baby boomers - there are a few of us on MetaFilter who are over 40, aren't there? To what extent is a lot of internal conflict here attributable to simple generational differences that are commonplace - though no less violent and, I should add, inevitable and ultimately unimportant - in our everyday lives?

Could we add optional personal info to our profile pages?

Would it be a good idea to let members enter some optional personal information (age, sex, location, shoe size, etc.) on their profile page?
