MeFi's own Craigslist?

Is there any kind of site, alternate page, forum, etc. set up for MeFites to post announcements about locally-specific things that are not gatherings? If not, could there be? This came to mind because I'm starting to look for a new roommate, and I'm trying to confine my search to smaller circles at first before I go the Craigslist route. But that's the kind of thing I'm talking about -- a place to post "I have a spare room in my apartment available" or "I'm selling my car if anyone's interested" or the like. There's the job board already, but that's different.

And no, I'm not envisioning a separate page for each location -- more like "here's the forum set up for local announcements, look for the single thread that has to do with your city" and that one thread has all the "roommate wanted", "kittens for sale," etc. announcements.

Thanks!

Search me!

The new Search is officially live. Full details to follow. We've been testing out search for the past few weeks and after rolling out searching of favorites we figured it was time to roll it out as a site-wide and site-specific feature.

The nav in the header and footer should have a link to the search engine and it works for only logged in members. The search boxes you will see in the header and footer for those in the normal site template (plain text version doesn't have them) are already wired up to search just the site you are viewing.

So, in other words, you can search all mefi sites for a phrase like "Peru" or if you type "Peru" in the search box on Ask MeFi, it will automatically show results just for Ask MeFi. There's a handy drop down to change to other sites, or search across all sites.

The footer of the search results shows you all the pages of results, allowing you to easily jump to the oldest result (I already found out I was the first person to use the word "Bush" on mefi). There's also a link to google and yahoo results on the site for that phrase.

We will eventually add more features to an advanced page, letting do things like filter results for stuff from just one user, stuff with certain tags, stuff with favorites, etc.

For now, enjoy, it's pretty good and blazing fast in our testing, so feel free to try using it to dig up that Ask MeFi post you've been looking for and let us know if you find any problems or have suggestions to improve it.

mobile.MeFi.com

Announcing: mobile.metafilter.com
It's a new version of the sites designed for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Try it out on the device, songs from MeFi Music even play in the device (works best on wifi of course). A short video if it in action is inside.

The email code doesn't update the image.

The new graphic email code is broken. My original email was listed as something weird, but I've lost it in my subsequent changes, and it wasn't cached anywhere that I can find. It was something pretty close to:

"m;eta!^filter at m&al_or dot cawm (remove all punctuation, fix cawm)"

which seemed to work nicely for spam prevention: I wasn't, for instance, wendelled.

The new code breaks on that text. It appears you are assuming a well-formed email address, which is a bad idea when the field will accept anything, and so many people have obfuscated their addresses.

Further, it won't update, so that even though I've put a 'proper' email in the field, it's displaying the same broken image.

In case it updates on its own, I've put the broken email image here.

I would prefer to see this returned to the old method, just with a warning to obfuscate email addresses. OCR is very easy to do on such a regular image, and I don't want to be wendelled, but I DO want to get email from people who need to reach me.

Two new features

Recent changes:
1) I finally updated the MetaTalk posting page to be more like the rest of the site, and added titles. RSS will soon have titles added. Also, no more "bugs" category as the generic catch-all, as I force you to pick one.
2) - For firefox 2.0 and IE7 users, you might notice being on a mefi site, the upper right search box is glowing or highlighted. If you click it, you can add a server-wide MeFi search (using the Google aggregated results from all *.metafilter.com sites) and search directly from your browser.

Announcing: give a mefi account as a gift.

Currently in beta: give a mefi account as a gift. I think all the bugs have been worked out. You put in your friend's email, pay the five bucks, and they'll get an email letting them pick a username, password, and other details. If you try it out, let me know if you or your friend gets any errors.

Can I invite people to non-metafilter events?

I was wondering about the etiquette of inviting mefites to non-metafilter events. I'm not talking about concerts or art shows or anything where money is exchanged, and I'm not talking about I'm bored/drunk/lonely, wanna hang out? situations. Rather I'm talking about open events that require active participation like parties, writing workshops, or bike rides. Can I do that?

By the by, Chicago Mefites, Zephyr's ice cream is closing for good this Sunday and I'm organizing a bike ride to go pig out there.

Announcing: favorites and flagging

I'm working on favorites and releasing what I have today. Think of favorites as an internal bookmark system, a way to keep a list of the good questions, great comments, or interesting ideas you've found here.

Right now, you can mark a thread on mefi, metatalk, or ask mefi as a favorite, and view it at the link in the header above (is the header too wide for small monitors?). All your stuff marked as a favorite is public and anyone else can see the stuff you've marked (this comes in handy later on).

I'll be adding the ability to flag comments later today and very soon I'll be doing something akin to the fantastic posts page on Ask MeFi, where the most favorited things over the past few days is highlighted on a single page.

announcement: non-logged in users can no longer see contact info.

I made a slight change to the user pages. Logged in users see everything as it was before, but non-logged in users don't see any contact information except for websites URLs. I had long worried about the spam thwarting measures I have employed not being good enough, and I've also been hearing about non-members hassling members for memberships, posting, etc. So with the new change, non-members won't be able to harvest addresses, or send you an email (unless you've got it listed on your homepage URL somewhere), and they won't know your AIM/ICQ or location.
