This Could Be the Year!

Hey everybody! MetaFilter is nominated for a 2008 Weblog Award for Best Online Community! The good news is this year FARK is not nominated (2007, 2006) which means right now, we are only losing to a Flickr Group, My Opera and Jennifer Marohasy (who is apparently a one-person community of Climate Change Skeptic(s)). Less than 6000 votes total so far and there are over 80,000 of us. So let's go MetaFighters! Vote Early and Vote Often (once every 24 hours). Yes, this is the Weblog Awards that has been closely associated with the Pajama-Wearing Warbloggers, but with FiveThirtyEight leading the Political category and some other good blogs looking good, I really think that this year it will wendell.

But also, the much more respected Bloggies are accepting nominations, and even though MeFi, having WON the Community Category 3 times, has been "Hall of Famed" out of competition, I, for one, think it'd be cool if MetaFilter's Own Matt Haughey got the Lifetime Achievement Award the same year his site turns 10. Just sayin'. (scroll wa-a-a-a-ay to the right in Nicolai Nolan's defiantly unorthodox site navigation)

MetaFilter has won a Bloggie for "best group or community weblog". And mathowie must be happy that Kottke won his lifetime achievement award.

Best of MeFi

Best of MeFi, would it be possible to revive it? Matt pointed out it was too much work to do it daily, and he already puts in way too much time and effort running this place. Perhaps it would be better if it was a weekly or a bi-weekly email, with a volunteer guest editor picking the threads. What do you think?

Thread of the Week

Idea: every week, each user gets to vote for one thread as Thread of the Week. Monday, the winning thread is linked in the sidebar. Occurred to me as I was reading the smoking thread, which I almost missed completely.

Blogdex Ranking

I'd just like to point out that blogdex lists MeFi as the Number 4 All-Time Linked site on over 10,000 blogs. The first three are all blog-creation or blog-hosting sites, so I guess that makes MeFi really the #1 community site. but we knew that, didn't we ;-)

Annual MeFi Awards

I think there should be an annual Mefi Awards, with categories and all that. Best thread. Best member name. Best proposed feature. Worst Proposed Feature. Worst thread, and so on. And I think the first order of business should be to vote on the categories.
