SF is better than NYC. There. I said it.

Hello, San Francisco! I've been living here for six weeks now and already I know that this is the perfect place and time for me to exist. I love everything and everyone here, and I want to marry you all and best friend you and have a thousand million babies with you. Which is to say, YES! I live here now! KEEEEE YAH! Which is to say, YES! LET'S! MEET! UP! I'm thinking <strike>Dec 18th</strike> [note: Dec 19th instead, see below], because that is the day that maximizes the greatest amount of awesome for our awesome. I'll leave it up to you where we shall meet, and pray to Tlaloc and Marduk that this doesn't have to involve a spreadsheet. (and if you think I'm joking, look back at some of the NYC meetup threads)

(although, to be fair, the spreadsheet did work pretty well.)

Worth checking out in Music: Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley sings on a song in Music. I kid you not. And it is awesome. Wanted to point it out, as otherwise people might miss it, even though I know this makes everything I have ever contributed to Music seem pale and small like a wet and lonely child.

Fuck Yes PDX! Next meet-up?

Fuck Yeah Portland Mefites. Now onto the next one! So last night's meet-up was fucking awesome (and I'm now ready to give East Burn the greatest wait staff in pdx award). Gecko and I got to talking and, given that the only downside of the East Burn is their antagonism to customers roasting marshmallows on their table fires, the next meet-up could be in my backyard, where there is a fire pit (and, as it turns out, is only blocks away from dersins...)

Gecko and I were thinking September 12th. Yeah, we know its kinda soon, but why the fuck not (WTFN)? And that way we can hold a little candlelight vigil for David Foster Wallace...

Thoughts? Questions? Answers? and yeah of course Cortex won't be there, and we've all gotten a little spoiled here in pdx with the mefi celebrity appearances at our meet-ups, and no it won't be the same without him but we're just going to have to deal...

Triangle NC Meetup 9/22

Triangle NC-Cortex-Meetup GO! So Cortex will be gracing us w/ his amazing presence on Tuesday 9/22. Where should we take him?? Do we want to do a Raleigh meetup since it's been a while? Or are the Durham/CH peeps more vocal? What is the best place for a meetup of this magnitude? Vote here, vote now.

At the moment I'm only partially employed and have Mondays and Tuesdays off, so I will be available for Cortex-ferrying, but that could change at any time, so please also let us know if you're around on Mondays/Tuesdays to pick Cortex up and drive him awesome places. I believe he is crashing w/ Stewriffic so I guess Local Yogurt and some other Durham locales are covered already. :)

mathowie, mullacc, SassHat, and ColdChef is coming to WarmL.A.!

Los Angeles Mefites, your attention please: We are about to be visited by one of Metafilter's most distinguished gentlemen. Please join us on Thursday, June 11, to welcome ColdChef to the City of Angels, and make this evening of LA-meets-L.A. a meetup to remember! I'm proposing Farmer's Market on 3rd for a few reasons: ColdChef must experience it anyway while he's in town; it's close to a number of other sights he might conceivably be visiting during the day; it's got a wide selection of food and drink to make everyone happy.

What say you, good Angelenos?

Awesome Obit Post to the Blue

I just want to say that this is one hell of a strong first-post that has really flown under the radar. And I would like to thank Ranucci (flesh out your profile for us!) for a really nice Texas-themed post which is a very pleasant contrast to a couple of posts that have turned into bash-fests lately. It's gonna take me months to work through the links and books he's got there. This is how obit-filter can be done with style.

I <3 nineRED...

I just wanted to say that nineRED is awesome! So, I posted a question asking if anyone knew where I could find a shirt similar to what Jennifer Aniston's character from "Office Space" was wearing. And nineRED stepped up. (Thanks, man!) I just thought you should know how our group costume turned out. We didn't win, but everyone in our group thought we were robbed...

The MeFi Tahoe Snowjob, 2/1/09

MeFites + Snow = AWESOME. That's why we should have a meetup in the Lake Tahoe area on Sunday, February 1st, at a snowpark. Proposed location: In or around Lake Tahoe, California.

Proposed date: Sunday, February 1st.

Proposed time: Morning.

Proposed AWESOMENESS:

Let's meet up at one of the snow parks around Lake Tahoe on the morning of Sunday, February 1st, for sledding, snow tubing, snowman-building, stovetop hot chocolate, and anything else we can think of. Then we can, around noon, retire to Tahoe proper for lunch, and go our separate ways.

I'm posting this this far in advance in case any out-of-town MeFites want to drop in for some Friday or Saturday boarding, skiing or snowshoeing at one of Tahoe's resorts. I'm looking at you, mathowie.

If you're interested, speak up, so I can gauge how much potential there is.

Yet another shoutout for a MeFite going above and beyond the call of duty in real life: HopperFan. Anonymous poster asks about pulling his or her own tooth. HopperFan offers to cover Anonymous' bill in honor of Soulbee.

After reading the comments today, the kindness and support that's overflowing (especially now, looking at the posts here on the gray)... today has definitely brought out the best in people.

Stay awesome, Metafilter.

My heart be warmed

This AskMe thread looked like trouble but turned into a pretty encouraging display of thoughtfulness and knowledge, and when Grlnxtdr started to really understand the responses it just about knocked me out. A fascinating read, too. It's a great example of what MeFi can do well, and a temporary chaser to the daily doses of snark and petty quarrels (and might even help scrub off your mental image of Cortex modding nude). Probably not Sidebar-able, but worthy of notice.

Thanks to some awesome, loving MeFites

My heartfelt thanks to loving MeFites: Brandon Blatcher, hadjiboy, Grammar Moses, madamjujujive, vronsky, hortense, It's Raining Florence Henderson, rtha and Hildegarde. Over the last several months I've been distressed dealing with possible metastases, biopsies, possible upcoming surgeries, finding new doctors, coping with surviving late stage cancer, while living alone and having no family or practically helpful friends near at hand.

These 9 MeFites have been consistently caring, giving, loving, kind, patient, helpful and just sheer amazing. I wanted to publicly thank them, as well as let others know how wonderful they've been, that MetaFilter has certainly been a real community of loving support.

Brandon Blatcher has gently, steadily encouraged me as I faced needing to deal with additional tests and fears about the scariness of managing all this stuff for 3 months now, truly like a loving brother. He has been an extraordinary friend.

A few minutes ago I received a beautiful bouquet of roses from hadjiboy, who lives in Hyderabad, India and 2 round the world telephone calls from him before and after, on the day I had my last biopsy and felt very nervous about the procedure. Grammar Moses, herself a survivor, just sent me a link to a patient advocacy service. hortense sent jade pebbles from the West Coast, a thoughtful touch of Nature to hang onto; madamjujujive spent a dozen hours on the phone with me over several months and sent a cheerful, lovely bouquet of tulips a week ago; Hildegarde has given me reassurances and shared her journey of similar biopsies; rtha has been warmly friendly, IRFH called and offered his intelligent positivity and vronsky has been caring and supportive.

All these people know how profoundly grateful I am to them but I wanted to share this in MetaTalk and say how exceptionally kind these particular MeFites have been.

Listed under "etiquette" as awesome.
