Dialup and video don't mix; how about a warning?

It would be nice to have a warning about Google Video in front page links. Dial-up and video don't mix.

Removing Ads

Is it possible/good karma to turn off the adbar on the side, now that I'm one of the (mass of) elite Metafilter users? I don't want to do it in general -- paying for the existence of MeFi is something I'm quite happy to do by showing ads -- but from school I get a fair amount less bandwidth (University wireless is a mess) and every little bit I can trim out is a good thing by me.

Server Downtime

Sorry about the downtime -- it turns out that storms and thunder and lightning make the power in Brookline, MA go away for a short bit. Thank goodness for the wonder of uninterruptible power supplies and graceful shutdowns...

We've discussed problems with geocities links before

Regarding this post: We've discussed problems with geocities links before. Unfortunately people are not requiored to have read that discussion before posting. Can we grep front Page posts for sites with limited bandwidth quotas (geocities and other known free hosting sites) and then at least warn the posters on the preview pane that they should probably get the google cash or try and find the content elseware?

Scientology primer host passes bandwidth bill

The host of the '70s Scientology primer that brought so much joy to Metafilter and others is passing the hat for an unexpected bandwidth bill: "~50,000 people saw the site, and given that I do not think it is crazy to assume that 210 of them (you) can donate a dollar (just one!) to my cause."

Metafilter Slowdowns

Am I the only one who has been experiencing a good deal of downtime, timeouts, and generally slow surfing lately on MetaFilter?

I remember reading awhile back that signups were turned off the last time because of server strain. Is that the issue here or are we (is Matt) dealing with something else?

New Fast Server?

Gee, MetaFilter's fast. Surely, this is the new server? But so soon, just a week after Matt ordered it? That hardly seems possible! Is everyone seeing a huge speed increase?

Server Upgrades

MeFi/MeTa seem very zippy to me

Has mathowie got some more bandwidth or other upgrade? MeFi/MeTa seem very zippy to me, past couple of days.

How to I use the image tag?

I have noticed some comment posts have images....is this "allowed" and if so, how does an oaf like me do it too? (Advanced apologies for my ignorance. I did search but couldnt find the answer.)

Any ideas about distributing the load?

It would help a great deal if we had traffic news for MeFi. Timezones are all-important. Us Europeans tend to post when all you American members are asleep.
To save bandwidth, perhaps we could all try to post whenever traffic is slower.
There seem to be three definite waves: European, East Coast and West Coast. If we all fell into our appropriate slots - it feels mean to barge in on you Americans because this is an American site, after all - perhaps we could speed up access for all members and readers.

Nonusers can't even look at mefi?

Will new users ever* be let into** MetaFilter?

*I’m not interested in starting a conversation about the various benefits and liabilities of more users.

**Open MetaFilter.com with cookies off, and you'll see what I mean.

Speedy MeFi

Great job, Jason, MeFi is speedy once more. And I'm within a mile of the box itself.

Somehow being in such close physical proximity to MeFi is soothing.

Searching and Bandwidth

Regarding the bandwidth concerns: Which uses less bandwidth?

—The occasional double post? And the obligatory flames? And the use of the search function to justify thse flames?

—Or using the search function prior to posting at all?

Please check.
