Hi MeFites. After many years of overthinking a plate of beans, I made a thing! I'm pleased to share my PhD dissertation about MetaFilter with you all. A simple question of how we pronounce our own nickname has unfolded into many years of research. This time spent would not have been as enriching or meaningful to me and to the field of sociolinguistics without the support and enthusiasm of my fellow MeFites. I would like to take this time to note that we had our (first?) NOVA meetup and it was a wonderful success! While the original players were unknown, we navigated our way forward by waving cans of beans at any soul who looked a little too bewildered and lost. By way of perseverance and long arms it worked, and we had a lovely time, such that we hope to bring you more stories of such heroics in the coming future. Metafilter has no official mascot that I'm aware of, though jquinby once proposed the giant squid. Wendell seems to have taken down his design for the overthinkin' bean. I have a critter here that deserves consideration: the pancake batfish, Halieutichthys aculeatus. "They're not like a flounder; they are much more mobile, more like a pancake with feet."
