Best-of...

Maybe it's just my love of ἀρετή, but to me, the best thing about the end of the year is the best-of-year lists. I can't help it! I love it when professionals and friends start reeling off their picks of excellence in a Gregorian-calendrically-delimited fashion. Could we have just one place where Mefites get to say what were the best albums, books, movies, poems, gadgets, concerts, political events, celebrity pratfalls, Supreme Court opinions, and websites of 2008? And could this thread be the place? We could also discuss the best deranged rants, overthought plates o' beans, and metafilter posts of 2008!

Technically, this is a feature request, since what I really want is for the moderators to leave this chat-filtery thread open, but it's metafilter-related because it's... All. About. You. Yes, You.

Also, moderators, if you don't mind me asking, which posts are still in contention for the best-of-December contest?

All time favorite comment?

Link to your favorite comment.
I try to favorite as many or more comments than I get. I hit the ones that made me laugh, or that I would have written if not beaten to the punch, but many of the ones I favorite I don't think about much down the road.

But some I do.

Like this one: My Favorite. A comment saying the poster would rather die than get a poo transplant.

This makes me laugh to this day.

Best of MeFi / 'Comment Dividers' Error

Two things (and yes, I'm cheating). First, I'm wondering if there's any mechanism out there that allows us to look at a "best of" for Mefi and Ask Mefi. Popular favorites in the last 24 hours immediately leaps to mind, and would indeed be ideal, but I'm looking for an RSS feed, and Mathowie says that's a no-go in past MeTas. (Any chance we could change your mind, Matt?) I hear there used to be a third-party blog that did it, but I don't think that's around any longer. Perhaps the sidebar feed ... at least for Mefi? Still, the sidebar is like a "best of best of Mefi." Second, and on an entirely different subject, when the MeFi comment dividers Greasemonkey script is used, it throws off permalinks to comments ... if you click on a comment permalink somewhere else (i.e. a Recent Activity page or a Favorites page), you're at first dropped at the anchor for the comment on the page, but when the comment dividers are applied, it bounces away. Anyone have an idea how that effect might be avoided? I'm more of a idiot-splicer than a programmer, so I really have no idea how to change that script to avoid the effect. Thanks in advance for any advice or answers on both questions ...

less meta mefi sideblog?

I'm missing the inclusion of noteworthy posts/comments on the sideblog (it's been a couple months since a non-"site news" tidbit). Is it on its way out as a "super bump" or has the community just been that uninteresting?

I just noticed that we have a metafilterhistory tag. This, dear admins, is a brilliant idea, and was a great walk down memory lane. We have cameras, indeed. I was wondering, perhaps, if people wanted to nominate threads they thought had an impact on MeFi culture and history here.

"Best of" link borked?

FYI, the "Best of" link is a little borked. I'm seeing no winners for Aug 10th, and two winners for Aug 9th, with a ton of runners up on the 9th.

Best of... bug?

On the Best Of page I'm seeing two winners & four runners up for August 5th, with one winner & one runner up for August 6th. Is the page borked, or do the number of winners & near winners change depending on the value of the day's posts?

The contest results for August are all posted here. There's a small marker at the end of the post noting the winners and the runner ups for each day (we'll pick three good ones, and one winner from that). So far, no one is putting their paypal info in their profile, so I haven't sent out one red cent, so get to updatin' your profile already (the paypal info isn't displayed anywhere on the site).

Best of MeFi

Best of MeFi, would it be possible to revive it? Matt pointed out it was too much work to do it daily, and he already puts in way too much time and effort running this place. Perhaps it would be better if it was a weekly or a bi-weekly email, with a volunteer guest editor picking the threads. What do you think?

Compiling a best of Metafilter

I was thinking of doing a list of "best of" threads for metafilter, on the archives page. Do you recall any of the best threads that meet the following criteria? If so, post them here as a comment.

How about by topic?

threads on:
globalization: (I know there were at least a couple great, civil, long threads about it)
prisions: (among the 5 or 6 in recent memory there must be one or two good ones)
abortion:
homosexuality:
SUVs:
death penalty:
huge news threads: (the biggest kaycee one, the seattle earthquake, and the first WTC one?)
good audience participation threads:

good weird finds? best thing for $30 threads? Just plain good threads that don't meet any of the above criteria?

If you have any favorites, post a link to them, and I'll try to organize them. Think about the best MetaFilter has to offer, and find those threads that exemplify what the site can be.
