looking for a blog post 'users are the problem'

I remember a blog post somewhere advocating for strong moderation, with the theme 'users are the problem.' But now I can't find it. It was from several years ago, and I think I saw it on Metafilter. Many rounds of googling and mefi-searching have been fruitless. The example story was a MUD, in which the players had no oversight, and eventually demanded that the developers step in as moderators and administrators to deal with resultant problems. Does anyone else remember this?

We asked them what the best thing that’s happened to them since they became a Flickr member, what it is that they love about Flickr, and what their eight favorite photos from other Flickr members are. We will publish the eight installments throughout the day.

IGMOFB!

New sub-site suggestion: MOFB.metafilter.com So, here are the thoughts that prompt this:

A. A lot of mefites - I mean, a lot - have really interesting blogs of their own.
B. Mefite bloggers cannot link to their own blogs on the blue.
C. According to the text of the Projects subsite, they can't post them there either.

I for one would love to be able to browse a section of self-submitted blog posts from mefites - much of which I surely would never have otherwise been exposed to. Perhaps a once-per-month posting limit? I would think that that would evolve into this really interesting, self-curated mixture of great content on just an amazingly diverse array of topics and approaches.

(I'm only part-way serious about the mofb name, but I'm totally serious about the concept. There is probably a better name.)

Introducing shitmycontactformsays.tumblr.com

Curious about the weird this-is-so-not-Metafilter-related mail we get at the contact form? Then you might enjoy Thank You For Contacting Metafilter, aka Shit My Contact Form Says, a tumblr we've put together in the last few days. The Metafilter contact form is super duper useful for actual Metafilter-related stuff, but because it's an unmoderated form on a highly visible website it also draws in a lot of spam and clueless marketing and confused googlers and inscrutable nonsense from non-members every day.

We've joked off and on over the years (and folks have asked us a number of times) about making a blog for the weirder stuff, the stuff that has basically zero to do with Metafilter but ends up in our inboxes anyway, and this is that.

We won't ever be quoting actual site-related communications with members, just weird/funny non-member WTF stuff, and we're blacking out names and domain names and such to keep it anonymous even for the weird spammer people. If something somehow gets up there that shouldn't, let us know and we can nix it.

Right now there's about a hundred and seventy five entries, which accounts for maybe a third to a half of my old backlog of weird emails (I kept track of them by hand for a year or so). We'll update with new stuff as it comes along and I'll periodically add more from my backlog as well.

A Gay Girl Missing in Damascus

Amina Arraf, author of the "A Gay Girl in Damascus" blog (previously), is missing. From the blog:

Earlier today, at approximately 6:00 pm Damascus time, Amina was walking in the area of the Abbasid bus station, near Fares al Khouri Street. She had gone to meet a person involved with the Local Coordinating Committee and was accompanied by a friend.

Amina told the friend that she would go ahead and they were separated. Amina had, apparently, identified the person she was to meet. However, while her companion was still close by, Amina was seized by three men in their early 20’s. According to the witness (who does not want her identity known), the men were armed. Amina hit one of them and told the friend to go find her father.

One of the men then put his hand over Amina’s mouth and they hustled her into a red Dacia Logan with a window sticker of Basel Assad. The witness did not get the tag number. She promptly went and found Amina’s father.

Wrong Number

Looking for a Metafilter post or comment regarding a blog of text messages sent to the wrong number. A few months ago someone posted a link to a blog set up by a young lady who receives text messages intended for people with her same name. It had something to do with the way her cell phone provider set up some kind of shortcut feature. She collects the messages and posts them to her blog. I can't seem to find it. Help please? Thanks.

Blogpost Project Entry?

In the Post to Projects screen, it warns: "...so please try to keep it limited to launching new projects and please don't use the space to link to a blog entry or an essay you wrote." First, this is absolutely nothing against the awesome ScoutingNY blog; I can see why the post was put up on the Blue. However, it originated from a Projects page. It strikes me as a very 'bloggy' Projects post, a bunch of images and minimal information, and hardly 'unveiling a new site' like the Projects page recommends. So, now my impression is that bloggy posts are OK if they are largely original content (essentially launching a 'one page' website) -- or do they just get a pass if they are sufficiently awesome enough?

Get Your Own Blog. Well, Perhaps I May...

Etiquette call: Using one's own comments on one's own blog? Let's say I started my own blog. On my blog, in addition to other content, I decide to "graduate" some of my MeFi comments to my own blog, where, theoretically, they get a different audience.

For example, in yesterday's Palin thread, I decide to reprint my own comment on my own blog, sans anyone else's content, and linking to the freely available Washington Post column that the post linked to.

I would be diligent in ensuring that only my MeFi contribution would be re-posted this way.

Kosher or no? I can see valid arguments on either side.

The Follow-Up Thread

I thought I'd gather together some follow-up links for various things I thought were worth following up on since they were originally posted to the blue. Some things worth checking out, but not individually meaty enough for a whole new FPP. Dave Secretary of TIME FOR SOME STORIES fame has started a blog with even more ALL CAPS delight. [original post]

You Suck At Photoshop now has total of 21 episodes up on YouTube, in two "seasons" -- season one and season two, as well as the (less-inspired) offshoot Sn4tchbukl3r's Second Chance. [original post]

Bad News Hughes has closed up shop, and Patrick Hughes can now be found blundering through "adulthood" at The Domesticated Shithead. [original post]

Shane Acker's "9" is finally scheduled for theatrical release, on 9/9/09. Trailer is here. [original post]

Bill Hicks' previously unaired 1993 Letterman appearance was, as promised, finally aired on the January 30, 2009 episode of The Late Show. Parts one, two, and the actual routine in part three, are on YouTube. [original post]

This American Life released a third radio episode on the economy. Episode 375: Bad Bank reunites Alex Blumberg and NPR’s Adam Davidson, to continue in the vein of 355: The Giant Pool of Money and 365: Another Frightening Show About the Economy. [original post and follow-up]

Jan Van Den Hemel and Andrew Hussie's Star Trek: TNG Mashups have been joined by two Back to the Future mashups: BTTF - temporal experiment numbers One and Two, as well as continuing the original mission with numbers 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19. [original post]

Finally, my favorite: Fifty People, One Question now has four wonderful videos up. You can find One, Two, Three, and Four on Vimeo. [original post]

A couple others can be found under the followup tag. I'm sure there's lots more.

No guessing required: this is a callout

Is tombola breaking the guidelines by posting a blog post from a site for which he is an editor? The Chernobyl dry cleaning post seemed a bit off to me, so I looked a little closer. It might be an edge case, but it seems wrong to link to a blog post when you are employed as an editor by the website on which the post appears. Blogs would probably be the responsibility of the communities editor, which is tombola's position at the Times Online. That said, tombola's posting history reveals that four of his fourteen posts are links to blog posts on the Times Online site (and another contains a supplementary link to a blog post on the site), another four are other links to the Times Online site, and two are links to tombola's musicthing blog (which, I'll be the first to admit, is a great site, but is clearly a self-link).
