Opera Mini and MeFi: Two Great Tastes That Taste Assy Together

Can't comment from Opera Mini on a Blackberry. I've tried a couple of times to post comments to the blue from two different models of Blackberry (8700 and 8900). Previously was running an older version of Opera Mini (can't recall which) on an old Blackberry 8700, and when I'd try to post a comment to the blue, it would preview just fine, but when I hit the post button it would load the preview page again. Repeated hitting of the post button just continues to preview. Currently running Opera Mini 4.2.14912 on my new 8900, tried to comment in the Dreamcast thread this morning while waiting at the doctor's office, and got the same problem.

I haven't tried yet posting to other subsites, and of course I don't want to make an FPP just to test if that functions properly in OM. Anyone else seen this?

Minor Recent Activity bug within: If I remove all my comments under the "My Comments" tab in Recent Activity it seems to break the footer and remove the ability to manage recent posts. You will need to navigate away from the tab and then back to it to reveal the bug. (FF 3.0.10 & Safari 3.2.1, OSX 10.4.11)

Bigger is not always better

OK, I've tried fixing this myself, and I give up. Why is AskMe displaying text at a different size font to every other part of Metafilter on my home computer? Here's a screenshot of how AskMe looks on my computer. It looks to be displaying at maybe a size 11 or 12 Arial font, which is different to every other part of Metafilter, which displays at a size 10 Arial font (as per this screenshot). Arial size 10 is also my user preference.

It's been doing this for maybe a month now. Over the course of the last month I've tried several different methods of fixing this.

* Logging out and back in
* Deleting all Metafilter.com cookies
* Deleting all cookies and my browsing history.
* Using the text zoom-in/out feature Firefox has. One size smaller make the font on AskMe too small (maybe about an 8 size font), and one size bigger makes it way too big (probably around a 14 size font).

I've also tried resetting my user preferences. Nothing to date has worked.

Also, this is only happening on my main home computer, where I use Firefox 3.0.10. At work, where I'm forced to use IE, and even on my networked home computer (also using Firefox), this isn't happening.

It should also be noted that;

* When I use IE on my main home computer, AskMe displays the font at the proper size.
* When I'm logged out using Firefox, AskMe still displays the larger font size.
* No other website I visit is doing this. It's just AskMe. All the other Metafilter subsites and every other website I visit displays at the proper size.

I do have Greasemonkey installed, but the only Metafilter related scripts I run are MeFiQuote, Deleted Posts, Asynchronous Flagging and EasyMeMail. I doubt it would be a problem with any of these, right?

So the problem would seem to rest with Firefox, but at the same time I'm confused as to why it would only be affecting Ask Metafilter, and no other website. Basically, I'm stumped. Anyone have any other ideas how to fix this? It's a small problem, I grant you, but one that has over time started to drive me nuts.

Word Wrap

Is this a word-wrapping bug? After commenting in the thread, I noticed that long URLs don't get word-wrapped. Is this by intention, or is this something that needs fixing?

Relative urls get borked in recent activity

I think I found a link url bug on recent activity. The links in this comment are as follows:

http://www.metafilter.com/76091/And-the-Philadelphia-Phillies-are-the-2008-World-Series-Champions#2318327
http://www.metafilter.com/76091/And-the-Philadelphia-Phillies-are-the-2008-World-Series-Champions#2318399

However, those same links on the recent activity page are like this:

http://www.metafilter.com/contribute/activity/#2318327
http://www.metafilter.com/contribute/activity/#2318399

I realize this is just a simple relative url issue, but for a second there it confused the hell out of me. Bothersome enough to fix?

But, it's my FAVORITE!

I can't seem to favorite comments or posts. I've tried to fave a couple of things today, and instead, it bounces me back up to the top of the page. When I refreshed the page, it seemed to hang on scripts.metafilter, and I briefly timed out when I logged out and logged back in. I'm using Firefox, and don't think I've updated anything since the last security patch, so theoretically nothing on my end should be different from yesterday, except that now I cannot give my textual approval. (I weep for those unapproved comments...how sad and lonely they must feel...)

Weird Permalinks in the FAQ

User photo upload mangles png

What with the buzz regarding user photo greasemonkeying, I have a user photo bug to report. Forgive me if it's a known issue (search didn't turn up anything). Any attempt to upload a png image results in garbled crap if the png is interlaced. Everything looks fine up until the cropping point, but after crop (even if no crop is needed) it becomes crazily distorted. I thought it might be due to transparent sections in the png but even a nontransparent one failed spectacularly.

My sole attempt to upload a non-interlaced png worked, it wasn't mangled, but colors were inverted and transparent portions of the image turned into psychedelic rainbow oddness.

I gave up and uploaded a gif file.

Photoshop CS3 to make it / FF3 Win to upload it, if it helps.

Mobile browser URL error

My mobile browser (LG Voyager) shows a URL Errors whenever I try to select a "more inside", "x comments", or "x answers" link. So there's no way to read anything that's not visible on the main pages. Whenever I select a link to go to an individual post, it shows "URL ERROR: Invalid address."
The browser is pretty capable with most sites, and it has javascript support; I didn't expect this problem. I don't think there's a way for me to actually see what address the browser is trying to access.

I tried manually entering a URL (http://www.metafilter.com/74795/Googles-speedy-little-red-browser) and it worked fine.

This problem has not always happened; it worked fine maybe three or four months ago, but more recently this problem has been totally consistent.
Any suggestions?

HTML Special Characters

Super-trivial bug with HTML special characters. I attempted to post an infinity symbol (∞) into this discussion. It looked correct in the Live Preview section, so I posted it. But the ampersand-hash-8734-semicolon was stripped to just say "8734." Meanwhile, the "approximately equal to" (ampersand-asymp-semicolon) worked.

My problem isn't so much that it didn't work (allowing HTML special characters is just asking for ASCII art and other junk), but that it did work in the Live Preview but not for real, resulting in my post in which I posited the the size of the universe was "approximately 8734." I suspect this is something that only comes up once in a while, but that's a pain every time it does.

It's definitely low-priority, but can the Live Preview be made to handle these things the same way that the actual system does? It could even give a warning, "HTML special characters are not allowed" or something. It'd just help if it was consistent in its behavior.

Also: previewing the post here shows the infinity symbol, but previewing a comment (who does that?) shows "8734."

MeFi breaking WebKit Nightly

Any other WebKit Nightly users noticing the MeFi front page main content is being shoved below the sidebar until you hit 'Refresh'? This started happening for me a couple of days ago. I am assuming it is a WebKit bug and not a problem with MeFi since hitting 'Refresh' makes the page draw as normal. I've created Bugzilla bug # 19707 to report the issue, just wondering if other people are experiencing the same thing, or if it's happening on other sites in WebKit besides MeFi.

Wonky Text Display...Just Me?

Is there some kind of residual April Fools joke going on? There's a weird glitch in the way MeFi displays for me over time. When I'm looking at MetaFilter (mostly AskMe and MeTa), there seems to be something strange going on in the way it's displayed on my monitor. One second it looks like this and the next, this. (For those with strained eyes, the former has nice, thick text and the latter is much thinner). You'll even see in the first picture that the first answer has different text thickness than the rest.

Relevant info: I'm using Firefox, on a Macbook (with Leopard), and I have the MeFi Navigator Greasemonkey script installed (only recently, but not as recent as the problem I've been noticing).

Is it just me? If so, and you've experienced the problem before, what can I do to rectify it?

Free style

A CSS fix for the line-height issue with and , an example of which can be seen in this thread. Notice how the * causes line-height issues?

Here's a simple solution:

WTF? How come you quit opening all MeFi links in a new page? And what are those goddam photos on the right side all about? Jeezus! I just figure out these damn digital parking meters and somebody comes up with something new.

italic, bold, link buttons gone in ff2.0.0.12?

Not sure if this is a mefi bug or not, but my italics/bold/link buttons seem to be missing in firefox since updating to 2.0.0.12. Apologies if this is just some snafu on my end. I have another computer still at 2.0.0.11 which shows the buttons fine.

Sidebar borked

Plutor, your contact mangled the sidebar... Weirdness when Plutor (a contact of mine) linked to user 13300 (whose handle is img src="http://www.gifs.cc/stline1.gif" - but with angle brackets). The sidebar is now... wide. So, what's the best way to hide him from the sidebar? Without removing him as a contact. Or do I just suck it up? (Sorry, I failed Internet twice yesterday. Going for the hat trick today.)

Are paginated favorites broken?

Are paginated favorites broken? I can't get to the second page of my favorites (I get the standard MeFi 404). I could have sworn I was looking at it earlier today, though...is it something on my end?

Non-poster seeing "add tag" on MeFi posts?

Non-poster seeing "add tag" on MeFi posts?
User "Nick Fisher" is seeing an "Add Tag" option on a blue post written by a different user. (me!) He sent me a screenshot, so he's definitely logged in as himself and not as me.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if it's something I just wasn't aware of, but I know neither he nor I see that option on any other FPPs at the moment.

Some comment upgrades

We've cleaned up a handful of bugs around comment forms and comment pages today. The tally is inside: - made the comment textarea 200px wider, from 400px to 600px
- added a (HTML help) link to the side which links to all three HTML related faq items
- made the live preview actually readable if you're in the plain text theme!
- added html shortcut icons to people using Safari 3.0 or higher (Leopard users) since that browser now supports it.

It's live on mefi (where the comment form feels as comfortable as a pair of stretch waistband sweats) and should be live shortly everywhere else. Let us know if you spot any weird visual display bugs in other browsers.
