Comment count bug
This is a minor bug, but if you go into the July Archives page, the Waking Life thread says it has 69 comments. If you click into the thread, the parenthetical reports 68 comments.

Two Small Questions
Two itsy-bitsy questions and one trivial, infinitesimal footnote:
1)On MetaTalk's front page it says "There have been no links and no comments posted since your last visit". Since posts here aren't required to have links wouldn't it be better to say posts or, following the wording on the posting box, threads?
2)Why, when you go back to revise your new post, does the category selected always jump back to bugs? (Some posts mistakenly attributed to bugs are impossible to find through the category archives).
Footnote: Does anyone else feel slightly disappointed when they check in on MeTa and there haven't been any new posts for what seems like ages? Is this ethically deplorable in any way? ;)

Bug in Mozilla 1.0
When I try to post a comment in Mozilla 1.0, the Preview screen shows "Comment Preview:" without the text box/buttons. This is only true in MeFi, not MeTa.
Deleted threads should not show up in user history
Threads which have been deleted by Matt should not show up in a search of those posted by a user, but they do.
MeFi DNS woes?
Is MetaFilter/Turlyming DNS down? I only seem to be able to reach MeFi because Squid cached the address. NS1 and NS2.turlyming.com aren't answering queries. Anyone?
number of new comments doesn't change on refresh
Ok, dumb question time. No matter how often I refresh the page, the new comments number for this thread seems to stay at six. Now, for a while the last comment on the thread was mine, so I know I've seen them all, and this isn't the first time I've encountered this. Anyone tell me what's up?
Problem opening MeTa links in a new window in IE6.
IE6, running on Win98SE. I have "open links in a new window" selected in my profile customization, but they open in the same window anyway.
doublepost bug bug
Well not a meta bug but an IE5.1/OS 10.1.5 one, and a first for me, I was using IE5.1/OS 9.1, never had the double comment blurb.
This is what changed for me, if I use the browser back button, after hitting post in the previous window, it post's twice, never happened in the earlier system, and I did it a lot (back button)...won't again I hope...but for what it's worth...

Netscape 6.1 bug
Netscape 6.1 bug: using the browser's back button from inside a thread gives you a popup window asking if you want to download a file of type called "text/html, text/html from http://www.metafilter.com". You have to use the "home" button to get back to the front page, and then scroll down to get back to where you were.
Formatting Buttons Missing
Hey - is it a bug, my browser, or a glitch: where's the formatting button, ie, BOLD-italic - for Mefi posts? (Win98SE, NS6.2)

something seems to be amiss with the metafilter RSS feed. it's well-formed, but only shows the channel data, no items.

I just tried to hit preview for a comment to 16366 and got an error page. This happens nowhere else. Not that the comment is of earthshaking urgency but it is pertinent... If it's on my end, yikes, what can I do, in the as read to a chimp version?
bug with the autotranslation of certain characters into HTML codes
There's still a bug with the autotranslation of certain characters into HTML codes. In this thread I just posted, each paragraph describing the AIMbots began with an equals sign followed by a greater-than sign. Hitting "preview" retained these characters, though in the actual text-entry box, they'd all been turned into "=>". Then, upon posting, they all showed up as "=>".
Three of four browsers agree, Mefi is broken.
Right now I need Netscape Navigator 4 to view Mefi correctly. In IE, Opera and Netscape 6, teh last words on the page are " of his recent cranial bleeding.". Maybe it's just me but I doubt it.
LofiMefi bug
there is an annoying bug in lofi.mefi: deleted FPP's and the number of comments show up long after deletion -- possibly till they fall of the lofi page. Such as this March 13 gaff:

Netscape problems
Disappearing comments in Netscape 4.78: when I post a comment to MeFi, it doesn't appear until I force the page to reload. When I post a comment to MeTa, it disappears completely! Obviously, I'm posting this with a different browser.
Fix My Triple-Post!
Erk. How do I undo a mistake? I think I just posted a comment three times. It's not showing up on the thread, but when I click to "comments made by this user," in my profile, it does show up. Can I erase it, somehow?
Missing "Post" Button
The 'Post' button for comments seems to have stopped working for me in Mac IE 5.1. The button is there, but it doesn't do anything.
Front page weirdness!
Front page wierdness! Under Opera 5 on Linux, the FPP for Digital Beauties is in Under Mozilla 0.9.2.1 on Linux, the entire front page from that point on is . Looks like it's due to an unbalanced container. And SIZE=1??? What's up with that???
fixed a couple long-standing bugs
I finally fixed a couple long-standing bugs. One, when you used <blockquote> in a comment, the preview page would look screwy, but upon submission, it would appear fine. That is fixed. The second, as mentioned by nicwolff below, had to do with the preview not being an exact preview of the comment after submission. That has been fixed, and the special code clean up that is done on submission is done on preview.

What makes all the new comments lights disappear in MeTa?
The moment I click on the first MeTa thread all the useful little "new comments" lights on the other threads disappear. This has never happened over on MetaFilter. What are we, second-class citizens here or what? :) Anyone know a way round this?

Preview and Post Broken in Netscape
Users can't preview or post comments in Netscape 6x. When you click the preview button the preview, form field and form button areas show up blank. I've experienced this on NS6.1 and NS6.2 on both MetaFilter and MetaTalk. This has only been happening over the past few days. (I think this bug may be related to this bug, but I'm not sure. For some reason I can't view source on the preview page.)
Weird Code in Comments
It may be just me, but in just the last couple of days I'm finding that my comments are being auto-appended with extra <p>, resulting in a few lines of blank space after my comments but before the comment footer. At first I figured it was just me being careless with extra <p> tags lying around in my post, but it's happening every time and this test post exhibited the same behavior. In the second paragraph, I typed the line and inserted no paragraph or br tags, and didn't even hit return to start a new line- yet after hitting "Post" there are extra <p> tags in the HTML after posting. Thoughts?

Weird Logout Error at Work
Whenever I log out of MeFi, the main page comes back up still with the white (X New) note after "comments." Then, when I try to refresh, I get "Error Occurred While Processing Request," specifically a "Loop error" concerning the QUERY= attribute specifying the query "weblog." Is this just something with my computer at work? (WinNT, IE 5)

Search Timeouts
It seems that both myself and Qubit are wondering about the search timing out. I did a MeFi Google search to see if anyone had recently linked e-sheep, and it looked safe. Little did I know. As per Qubit, why does the Metafilter specific search engine time out consistently, letting dumbasses like myself double post?
Preview Bugs
I was wondering why the Preview Comment page referred to being able to edit it "below" but there was no way to edit. I happened to have my Javascript console open today:

Multiple posting.
Today, a user posted SEVEN identical posts on the front page (here's one). It doesn't appear to be spam. I guess the user doesn't understand how to post threads (You may have to wait a while after hitting the Post button). If I were Matt, this is the kind of idiocy that would make my job suck.
Bad Formatting on MeFi Threads
MetaFilter’s code is messed up. The front page is fine, but all of the threads start with an unclosed anchor tag. This is bad. To be more specific, there’s only the left angle bracket and the insides of the link. You’re missing a right angle bracket and the closing tag.
Problems with Links
I can never include a link in my comments. I go through the motions and the appropriate window appears but then, when I preview or post the comment, it either comes out as gobbledygook or disappears.
Why is this? Subliminally it also makes me post more than I would feel like - because URL links are so effectively rendered when you post one to the front-page- so this is a real problem.

First paragraph of initial post missing on comments page
I seem to be losing the first paragraph of the initial post when I click through to /comments.mefi/# (win98/IE6). Not a big deal, as I've already read it on the front page, but... thought I'd mention it. Ignore me if it's just a result of heavy traffic (or something I'm doing wrong).
Fixed new/same window problem
I fixed a longstanding site problem for members. The "open links in a new window/open in the same window" feature has always been a bit buggy, but I finally cleaned up all the code that does it. So now, if you have your prefs set to new windows, you will always get a new window on any offsite link on the front page and comment pages, including everyone's comments (I wasn't doing this before). Also, I added a "two years ago" link to the sidebar.
Search Timeouts
The search facility is basically dead on its feet: I get timeouts 9 times out of 10. Understandable, given the size of the DB, but might it be worth outsourcing (ie, a Googlified site:www.metafilter.com link)?
