100K raffle is over! Congrats to jamaro!

The 100K raffle is over! In just four days, we raised $12,745 for five good causes thanks to the generosity of several hundred mefites. Video of the drawing here...or if you can't stand the suspense, winners and miscellaneous details are below the fold. Our five runners-up will each get their choice of a Metafilter tshirt from the shop as well as a copy of the Metafilter Compilation Album. They are: - lantius - birdsquared - lalex - bigmusic - ColdChef (who came up twice as a runner up, so we redrew, but he can have an extra shirt and CD too if he wants) And our grand prize winner, who gets custody of usernumber 100000 and paid airfare to and from a meetup of their choice: - jamaro! Congrats, everybody! We shot the video this afternoon; Jessamyn is traveling right now (happy birthday, Jessamyn's dad!) and I wanted to incorporate some ad hoc footage that she gamely cameraphoned in the airport but I didn't manage to pull it off. Hopefully she'll post those outtakes to youtube herself when she has a chance. And as folks who have been following the previous thread or Matt's twitter already know, we're having kind of a nightmare with Paypal right now freezing up Matt's account. Hopefully we can get that figured out in a sane way and finish off the raffle the way we intended, but if Paypal does ultimately just completely shit the bed on this we'd ask folks to go ahead and send the money they'd see refunded off to the intended beneficiaries on their own as a sort of DIY solution to the problem. We'll post more in here as things develop. Thanks again to everybody who participated and to everyone who helped support or brainstorm the idea along the way. This was a lot of fun and an amazing community turn out.

Raffling off the big 100K

We're raffling off usernumber 100000! ~~For the next week~~ Through Friday, you can buy $5 raffle tickets (to benefit your choice of five charitable orgs) for a chance to win the big account and airfare to a meetup of your choice. The details: 1. You can buy as many tickets as you like. The purchase page will let you buy multiple tickets in one go. (You can divvy your tickets up among multiple charities if you want to, by going through the purchase process multiple times and choosing a different charity each time.) 2. The face value of tickets will go to the charity; we'll eat the paypal commission fees on the transactions and write five checks at the end, one to each organization, for the full amounts donated. 3. The organizations are: - Doctors Without Borders - Kiva - DonorsChoose.org - Electronic Frontier Foundation - Creative Commons 4. The prizes: The grand prize is ownership of account 100000—you can name it whatever you like and it's yours to keep. (You're also expected not to do anything with it that'd break the guidelines, so don't get any Bond Villain ideas, please.) The grand prize winner will also be given airfare to attend the meetup of their choice, wherever it is and wherever they're coming from. Keep in mind it's just the roundtrip ticket; accommodations and so forth are up to the winner. If the grand prize winner isn't able to travel for whatever reason, they have the option of having a meetup come to them: we'll fly in one of the mefi mods. Instant nerd party! Five runner up prizes will be drawn as well, good for one (1) t-shirt of your choice from the Metafilter Shop and one (1) copy of the Metafilter Compilation Album. 5. The drawing will be done in the style of a normal raffle—buying more tickets gets you a better chance to win, but every ticket has a chance to win. Whether we have a physical raffle or use a random number generator will mostly depend on the volume of tickets, but in either case we'll take some pictures. 6. The raffle will run ~~for one week; next Monday~~ until Friday, at noon Friday we'll close it down and arrange a drawing and announce winners as quick as we can.

100k auction?

Behind the scenes, we've been thinking about what the 100,000th user on MeFi would mean, and how we could commemorate it, so I'm floating our idea here... When we hit 99,999, user signups will freeze for one week, and we'll launch a 7-day eBay auction for the 100,000th user account. All proceeds will be donated to Kiva.org at the end and we'll resume user signups. We've been talking about this privately for the past few weeks and given this morning's post on the issue I figure I'd make a new post instead of bury it in a comment. So, does this sound good to everyone? Is Kiva a good choice? For what it's worth, DonorsChoose.org (fund mostly US school kid projects) and Creative Commons were also front-runners but Kiva is still pretty cool and I could transfer the money to my team-linked account and disburse it to current listed projects, and recycle the money back into it as it gets repaid.

Last year we gave a little girl a bicycle. Anyone interested in getting together to sponsor a whole family? I know enough of you to know how generous you are. I thought it could be fun to pool our resources as a Metafilter.com team and sponsor a family through the NYCares Winter Wishes program. I volunteer to act as NYCares liaison, money/package (if people want to buy and send things) collector, and to get everything wrapped and delivered to the final destination. I figure anyone interested could say so here, I'll register for a family in the next few days (size based on interest in participating), and we can organize the details of how we'll split up our family's wishes off-site (I was thinking a mix of e-mail/Google docs, but suggestions would be welcome).

The Morning News is throwing their annual Tournament of Books to figure out the best book of 2007. A new twist this year is the Making Book Tournament where you bet on what the winner will be, with the proceeds going to First Book, a literacy foundation. MeFi is dollar matching bets up to $1,000 for the contest.

Internet Arguments for charity

Back in April you guys posted and commented on a cartoon I did called "Internet Argument." Matt's allowed me to mention here as a follow-up that I am now auctioning off the original cartoon with all proceeds going to charity. I usually do political cartoons but this one was more about internet, blogging, and general online bickering, and got a lot of attention from sites like MeFi, Slashdot, and Fark. So hopefully some of the people who liked the cartoon might like having the original and, you know, helping sick kids. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Child's Play charity organization delivering toys, video games, and funding for pediatric research to hospitals across North America. I'm kicking in for the shipping and posting fees so no funds have to be shaved off the top.

Charity contest idea

Last week's fundraiser became a sad debacle, and there's certainly no point retreading that ground. But I really like the idea of MeFites raising money for charity, and I think it's fun to make it a competition. I came up with an idea for a new, and hopefully friendlier and less divisive, contest for charity. I'd like to hear what you folks think. [more inside]

Announcing the new MetaFilter Fundraising for Fun project. dios and rothko/AlexReynolds have agreed to let you guys vote with your dollars, for charity. Throw some cash into the till for the guy you want to take a break for a week, and in the end it all goes to Creative Commons' fundraiser. Think of it as a charity dunk tank: you put down five bucks to toss a few at the guy you love to hate. It'll run for a week, so let's make the fun last.
