Pony request: Be nice if the "code" tag worked as expected. The use of the code tag is fairly frustrating in that it doesn't automatically translate left and right angled brackets into harmless HTML entities, and when you preview, having carefully and tediously gone through and manually edited, you find that they're all back again. Pony: Simply not allow any other HTML within the "code" tag (as it should be) and then automatically convert the tag brackets. Line numbers would be nice, but hey. If people are using "code" for other uses (namely, I think, to avoid the double line spacing of the "pre" tag, maybe fix the "pre" tag so it works as expected if it's a big problem?

Amazon Affiliate url?

Metafilter's Amazon.com Affiliate code url... I noticed Metafilter is using http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/XXXXXXXXXX/metafilter-20/ref=nosim/ url for it's Amazon.com Affiliate links. I assume MeFi is automagically rewriting the Amazon urls? I believe the preferred method of tagging Amazon.com product urls is: http://www.amazon.com/dp/XXXXXXXXXX/?tag=metafilter-20 Can anyone confirm this linking method? I'm sure the old-style ref=nosim code will continue to work (the ref=nosim variable was discontinued), but someone may want to update the rewrite script in case Amazon decides to break the old style of url for affiliate tracking. (They did retire the AWS 3.0 version of their affiliate system, breaking all those old scripts, so it's not out of the question.)

Hey Matt and pb: You know that sweet-ass bit of code you guys have that scrubs any link to Amazon and inserts your affiliate ID? It would totally rock if you would release a version of that as a Wordpress plugin. Seriously, I know it might be some work, but it sure would be useful. There are a handful of Amazon-themed WP plugins already, but none as simple and elegant as your solution.

Problems Posting Code To Ask yet again.

I really wish AskMeFi handled code better. As in, handled HTML, JavaScript, Perl, whatever, with linebreaks and indenting preserved. Some people are smart enough to use the PRE tag, but they still need to escape the HTML brackets, and their code gets extra linebreaks added.

When I need to post code I pre-process it with a script now but the average person isn't that obsessive.

The "regular expressions are overkill" guy has a problem in his code, please note, as does the "screw the dom" guy.

"Code" feature for ask.mefa? Not particular important or anything, but I've seen this a few times -- any attempt to post code into ask.mefi means that it'll lose its formatting.

Bug: old threads have the poster username linking to the thread with the same number as their usernumber. Example (working). Example (nonworking). Only in the post; the username links in comments are fine.

The code for Freefilter, an open source clone of Metafilter is now available. Mefi's structure as a posting and discussion board is unlike most other's available. It's fluid and user friendly and it was only a matter of time before someone coded their own version especially considering the success of Whedonesque and Sportsfilter. This isn't the first time an attempt has been made of course. This version isn't 'out of the box' yet though -- as the readme.txt says, you'll need:"A Web server, preferably Loonix, MySQL, an, er, recentish version, Perl, DBI and CGI modules for Perl, these should come as standard with most Perl installations, a sense of humor to read my source code..."

Separate windows to reduce server load?

I seem to remember Matt saying once that front page requests are the single biggest load on the server. Would it make sense to make all links, including threads, open up in a separate window (that can be reused)? People can still refresh the front page if they want the latest links.

MetaFilter’s code is messed up. The front page is fine, but all of the threads start with an unclosed anchor tag. This is bad. To be more specific, there’s only the left angle bracket and the insides of the link. You’re missing a right angle bracket and the closing tag.

what stops people from using metafilter like metababy? Is it understood? Is some sort of Hive Mind at work here? Although you retain final edit control Matt, what stops someone from entering malicious code or javascript that provides information about members to a second source unnoticed? Is there some sort of preventative measure I don't know about?
