JRun Error of 2009?

Problems Posting a Comment. I've tried several times to post a comment to the "I Wish I Was Special" post, and it's not going well. I've logged out and back in, I've tried switching browsers (Firefox to Safari), and it's just sitting and wanting to load and failing. All other sites load fine, and for that matter Metafilter loads fine. I just can't post a comment, apparently.

Sorry if this is lacking as a troubleshooting/bug post, I've never made one before.

Search Through User's Activity?

Would it be possible to have a search box on Activity subpages -- in other words, a search function that limits itself to a single user's comments or posts? I think this'd be a useful tool because, as one example, a lot of people may remember threads by virtue of author and comments -- "oh, this thread I half-remember, that was where Joe said 'flippy'" -- and being able to comment search would be useful to allow users to themselves coax partial memories out themselves without MeTa or admin assistance. I do see how it could be abused for stalkerish purposes, but we've not let that get in the way of implementing other existing conveniences such as per-user RSS post feeds, Google Earth KMZ links in profiles, and so on.

Since yesterday, I haven't been seeing the comment count in the RSS feeds anymore. I've tried in the main metafilter feed and in the popular posts feed. Is it a bug, an oversight, a suppressed pony? Is it just me? Thanks for listening.

Recent comments bug?

There may be a bug on the recent comments page. Upon making what I thought was the thousandth comment in the Sarah Palin thread, I noticed after posting that I was about four comments too early according to the comment count in the thread and on the front page -- but I was #1000 according to the recent comments page.

The recent comments page says there are currently 1010 comments; the count in the thread itself says 1006. Any reason for the discrepancy? Deleted comments throwing off the number of comments, for example?

Did I hallucinate a Metafilter comment?

I, too, am trying to find a comment I'm almost certain I read on the Blue. It was a refutation of the glib, "The internets is serious business!"-style dismissal of people who would deign to take anything said online to heart. The tone of the comment was something to the effect of, "Sure, it's no big deal, it has only connected much of the world's population in ways only dreamed of," or something. I'm not doing it justice, nor am I trying to.

The commenter might have been quoting someone else. Many thanks to anyone who can locate this!

Thanks for my pony?

Thanks for my pony? So early last year I asked for a pony, and I just recently noticed this functionality is in the RSS feed now. Is this a recent addition or have I just not noticed?

Do I thank pb/mathowie or feedburner for this one?

Why it's rational to believe what scientists say

I'm looking for a comment on Mefi or AskMe where someone gave an extended quote from a scientist/commentator (maybe Richard Feynman), explaining why it's rational for a layperson to believe what scientists say, even if you haven't figured out the mechanics of how they arrived at their conclusions. The gist was that it's sufficient just to know that the scientists are generally skilled at figuring things out. (That's probably oversimplifying, which is why I want to find the actual passage.) I forget if this was in AskMe or the blue. It was a long paragraph, probably taking up about 10 or 12 lines. It may have been all italicized, and it probably had some favorites. I believe the comment was in the middle of a long thread.

I've been Googling around but haven't found it. (A search for feynman science site:metafilter.com turns up 387 results.)

Whats with the period? I've started to notice a lot of posts that are made up of only a ".". I don't want to call anybody out because I may just be uninformed and there may be a purpose to it that I don't understand.

Whats up with that?

Is there a purpose to that, or is it just to be seen, or in agreement of the last post, OP, or what?

It doesn't contribute anything to the community...as far as I know.

I really don't understand.

Thanks in advance to all the mefites who will respond with a simple ".".

Who watches the Watchmen comments?

I finally got to see Watchmen last night and in talking about it afterwards, I was reminded of a comment I read on the blue that I cannot for the life of me find again. I have been looking for a couple of hours now and beginning to wonder if I made the whole thing up. Please help. The basic argument of the comment was that the person who should have directed Watchmen is some kid whose still in high-school right now and has been watching and critiquing superhero movies his whole life. The comment suggested that this hypothetical director has been making his own movies in the backyard and if given another decade to hone his craft would be the ideal film-maker to properly bring Watchmen to the screen. I think that I have probably paraphrased that pretty poorly. I remember the comment as being fairly long and getting a pretty good number of favorites. I have tried a bunch of different search terms and have been reading through the old Watchmen threads with no success, maybe someone out there is better at this than I am.

Collecting Specialness

I noticed Neatorama had another post from Metafilter on their site (previously), but then looked closely and noticed it wasn't Metafilter they were linking to. All of the collections featured seem to have a corresponding entry to a comment in the Metafilter post or the original Smithsonian article. Okay, so maybe there really are only so many special collections to feature, and it doesn't appear to be lifting the comment text, but it does seem to be letting someone else do the work. The site is also awfully suspicious in that this is the only thing on it. No this isn't illegal and maybe only borderline unethical, but it is annoying. Could it be that User Friendly is branching out into diploma milling?

I read an Ask Metafilter comment a while back that was an awesome recreation of what would happen if men actually verbalized their moment-to-moment thoughts to their significant other. It involved, as I remember, copious references to wanting to see other people naked and boss/co-worker killings. I really want to find the comment again to share it with a friend, but my search skills are not up to the task. If anyone can help me locate it, I promise to favorite it so this will never happen again.

Oh, and if this is an innapropriate use of MetaTalk, please feel free to flag this post for deletion and/or mock me mercilessly. Or mercifully. It's up to you.

Thanks!

Where's that post about what happens in the ER?

I can't find the comment about what happens when you show up at the ER for a mental health issue. I'm pretty sure it was in an AskMe thread posted by an anonymous person with bipolar symptoms, and I'm pretty sure it was sidebarred. (Is there a sidebar archive? Pony request!) Thanks in advance.

So, is there any reason why the tag view (example) has no comment count?

Fight iPhone Lag, disable comment autopreview

iPhone-y pony please: a way to supress the automatic inline comment preview to mitigate typing lag. Entering text into a plain text area like this one works pretty smoothly from my iPhone. Entering text into the comment fields on posts is miserable and laggy (which isn't good for accuracy). I strongly suspect the lag is due to the javascript that updates the live preview. Therefore I am asking for an easy way to disable the live preview. Basing it on automatic browser detection would be even cooler.
