Can we vote about this new favorites policy? I'm speaking, of course, about the fact that you now can't tell how many people have favorited a comment. All favorited comments, whether favorited once or a thousand times, only show "[faved +]"* I understand the reasoning, but it seriously breaks usability for me. Look, I come late to the party sometimes. I'll come to metatalk and there are 350 comments on the latest allegation of sexism or racism. I can't read them all, or even most of them. So I look for the greatest hits version, and I leave knowing I haven't missed anything huge. I can't do that anymore. My only options now are to read at random, read just the beginning and miss late valuable comments, or read the end and miss the early ones. This is not ideal. I understand the desire to make this more of a community and less of a popularity contest, but some comments really are more valuable than others. I would have clicked right by this reading the thread on my own. I don't want to miss that. I thought the lack of a downvoting feature was a nice compromise. You get community approval for well-taken and insightful comments and anecdotes, but no group rejection. Anyway, I'm sure you've thought about this a lot, and maybe it's a done deal, but it's one that makes me unhappy. Can we reconsider? * In copying and pasting this, I see that the number of favorites is still there, just hidden. Was this intentional so that someone can write a greasemonkey script? If so, anyone know how to write a greasemonkey script? Ideally one that plays nice with this?

Juvenile-RetaliationFilter: I'm amazed at some of the advice to retaliate in this thread, which would seem to endorse escalating the conflict rather than trying to find a workable solution. Especially alarming are suggestions of interfering with or causing the dogs discomfort in order to exact revenge on their owner (which this poster rightly objects to). Perhaps these are in jest, but the OP seems to take the suggestion to key her car seriously. Just wondering if maybe people's concept of public spaces varies from country to country, or if people are venting their grudges against dog-walkers or what? Anyhow I don't see where retaliation is a best answer to this problem or gets anywhere near reaching a better understanding or good solution, if community-minded spirit is valued (assuming it is). This sensible, straightforward piece of advice seems to be ignored, despite it's beautiful simplicity.

Thank you to all those who have sent kind words to us - they really do help us stay tough. And thanks as a whole to the MeFi community, which has kept me entertained, interested and mentally functioning the past weeks as I lurked, learning new things and following the drama. Vivienne passed away in her sleep last night - I guess she was waiting to make one final point.

Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?

Its been a tough month, but you are good people. I would like to thank you. A month ago today, we lost our friend Soulbee. All I can say is that you guys did exactly what Lexi would have wanted. You came together and responded in sympathy and kindness. I am yet still overwhelmed by the outpouring of support through this community, and there are far too many people than I can possibly thank in one short MeTa thread, but I'm going to take a shot anyway. piratebowling - thanks for pointing out my mistake early on. I am so very glad I was able to be at Lexi's service. ColdChef - you are a solid, thanks for giving me some of your time, it was extremely helpful. loquacious - thanks for pointing out what I couldn't say. jessamyn - your offer was incredibly kind and I thank you for it. iamkimiam - thanks for being Lexi's friend. I am sorry for your loss. Item - Lexi would have wanted you to come out of this doing better. I hope you are. ikkyu2 - you also are a solid. Thanks for being part of this community and thanks for understanding what I was going through and bearing with me. nickyskye - thanks for your kind and wise words. I think you and Lexi were something of kindred souls, though you might not have known each other. mathowie - thanks for the donation on behalf of the community. The gesture spoke volumes about the good people around here. I would also like to especially thank all of the people who posted such beautiful and moving passages in Soulbee's thread, and everyone (too many to mention) who filled up my MeFi mailbox with kind notes. Many people wondered how Lexi died - understandably. To this day I have no reason to suspect suicide. Her family has chosen not to speak publicly about it and I respect their wishes. All I know is that in her last hours alive, we were chatting and sharing music and talking about Africa. She was favoriting some of my photos from there on flickr. I don't think someone planning their own death would be bothering with favorites. One of the last things she asked me about was the languages I would have to learn when I returned to Africa more permanently. Lexi, I have good news. Today I accepted the position and I move to Kenya next month. I'll be working all over eastern, southern, and western africa in humanitarian supply chain management. I'll have to learn all those languages we talked about, and then some. Thanks everybody. My 30th year has been bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter.

Yet another shoutout for a MeFite going above and beyond the call of duty in real life: HopperFan. Anonymous poster asks about pulling his or her own tooth. HopperFan offers to cover Anonymous' bill in honor of Soulbee. After reading the comments today, the kindness and support that's overflowing (especially now, looking at the posts here on the gray)... today has definitely brought out the best in people. Just in time for holidays, Metsy is here! A lot of Mefites sell things on Etsy.com, and now you can find links to all our shops in one convenient location. I'm working on a Tumblr blog as well, so that people can see a bit more info about individual shops. If anyone has a not-too-complicated method for listing Tumblr tags in the sidebar, please let me know. As mentioned in the previous discussion thread, just message me with your Etsy username if you would like to be added to the Metsy team. If your shop is empty right now but you think you might eventually list anything in the future, go ahead and message me anyway.

Would anyone be interested in starting an Etsy Team? It looks as if quite a number of users sell things on Etsy, many others (including Great Leader) are fans, and until we get a real, non-static Mefi Shops section, having an Etsy Team might be a good way to at least get all the links to our shops together in one place. Here's their template for starting a team (I personally don't think it's necessary to have weekly chats and events and all that, but if someone else is interested in running those, that's cool too.)

A year ago today, one man had a vision that would bring together dozens of MeFites towards the heartwarming common goal of blowing the hell out of each other in Team Fortress 2. Subsequent ad hoc MeTa posts eventually led MeFi luminary stavrosthewonderchicken to throw up a simple forum for everyone to use as a point of contact - and the MeFight Club was born. Since then, the loose-knit "clan" has grown and matured: adding a public server to the mix, the organization of an elite contingent of competitive players, a webcomic shoutout, meetups, baked good exchanges, in-house tournaments, and ten-years worth of enjoyment crammed into the last 365 days. Now, with a current membership of almost 350, the group remains the nicest, coolest, and most fun people who have ever assembled to play games together. The only requirements for membership are a MetaFilter account, good sportsmanship, and a high tolerance for silliness. Team Fortress 2 isn't your thing? Well, we also have been known to hunt each other down like dogs, repel alien invasions, cause chaos in the streets of Liberty City, and even occasionally live like Rock Stars.

Did you know there's a Mefites for Obama group? Over 3,500 calls made, nearly 6,000 blog posts (ah, what we do best), over $10,000 raised! If you're part of the social network that is the Barack Obama campaign, why not come on over and join this little group -- boost those stats, and whatnot. If you're an Obama supporter and haven't done anything for your candidate, why the hell not? Close the Palin thread and make a call or two (it's easy -- you can do it from the website, they give you a script). I'd link the MeFites for ~~Palin~~ McCain group as well, but such a thing doesn't appear to exist.

I'm not terribly good, but I've gotten so that I don't weigh down teams I join in the auto-matching Big Boss channel. yes I checked the wiki; there's nothing there and I figured this is a better way to get people's attention.

Well, hell. Ike looks like it's going to be bad one. If any MeFites in the Houston/Galveston area find gas and find their way up I-45, we have a guest bed and a couch to spare if you need to crash for a few. Caveats: we do have a 48 lb. dog that sheds, so if you have animal-related allergies, well, it exists. Also, she's not overly friendly with other dogs (some, yes) or cats, but it can be worked around, especially if you don't mind crating them for a few days (and have your own crates). She's great with people, though. It also looks likely that we'll get some wind/rain up here in Dallas, but it shouldn't be anything fierce. Anyone else with a couch/spare bed to offer in the TX region is welcome to post their info here as well.

Which topics is AskMetafilter best at answering? I'm not referring to specific questions for which you've received the most helpful response; rather I'm wondering if people find that (for example) computer hardware questions receive more accurate and helpful answers than medical questions, or that AskMe is particularly bad at answering another type of question. Please correct my poor grammar; I know the question was badly phrased.

You know, there's been fiction about Mefi post-apocalypse. But if you look at this thread and at the 9/11 thread, it'd be 180° from what's been (jokingly) suggested: man, do we pull together. (I see visions of us geographically gathering together post-apocalypse and being the only functioning society on the planet ... ) Anyway, just thought I'd share my warm fuzzy moment of the day. Thanks, Matt, for pulling this community of overall really decent people together, and thanks to all of the mods, for keeping it up, running, and within a general defined range of sanity. Yeah, I know, not exactly a jumping-off base for controversial discussion or discussion. I just basically think it is really cool that when the chips are really down, nearly everyone drops their shit and tries to help out. That's a class of character that often feels all too rare in this world. (Lately, I'm beginning to think that a lot more people are noble than we'd think at first, though.)

Better late than never: This is a post to say thank you to 1f2frfbf for organising the inaugural Mefi Button Swap, and to share the spoils of said swap. My little parcel of fun arrived over a month ago, but I've been so caught up in a new, proper, pays me real money job, that I hadn't had time to think much about it. And then I realised that there hadn't been a follow up post here, big bad. The fridge magnet with cooking conversions was particularly timely, even more so as my house has just inherited a breadmaker minus the instruction manual, and being a bit out with your cup can be the difference between mmm tasty fresh bread and oh! no! yeast monster is invading the kitchen. I also love the I <3 Wilderbeast and the sparkly bits to stick on things. Also, I now own a fridge magnet of a rabbit with a pancake on it's head. Good times. My own contribution to the swap were some London tube map badges I made. I probably should have blogged the whole making of process, but I don't have a blog and my digital camera is refusing to do anything except take photos, and I left the whole making of until the very last minute and didn't really have time to faff about. So big thanks to 1f2frfbf for organising the whole shebang, including putting up with flaky Brits who get distracted by new jobs. I for one will be looking forward to other crafty/interesting Mefi swaps in the future.

I'm in the Bunny Baseball League, and it's been fun (although I wish there was more smack talk on there). So, anyone interested? P.S. If there is usually a league, I want to be in it.

Got any lyrics you'd like to see turned into songs? Got any songs that need lyrics? Post em on here and have fun collaborating with your fellow mefites. There's some cool stuff goin on over in the music section, if you haven't checked it out you should, it's awesome, if you don't mediocre might punch you in the dick Some mefites in the music section were talking about how much they hate writing lyrics but have oodles of music just lyin around. If you got anything you'd like to see turned into a song post em on here, maybe ORThey will add his chillin banjo or chococot will sing your song with his super sexy voice in a style that only Canadians can. If you haven't been over to the music section you should really check it out, it's good stuff.
