I find all of these end of the world FPP's curious. We had this excellent one about the film Threads
on Dec. 21st and this other about a new film called Ever Since the World Ended
from Nov. 14th and of course the one about the game DEFCON
from Oct. 2nd.
I wjust learned this was addressed on Metatalk back in March
of last year. (Please feel free to remove this if it is considered an un-necessary duplicate), but I thought it would be interesting to ask mefites what s going on? Why are we averaging one FPP per month in the last four months? Is it some sort of generalized abstract fear, is the much touted "hive mind" responding to feeling the second hand of the doomsday clock
moving closer to midnight or do people naturally turn to apocalyptic movies, books (and now video games) in times of uncertainty?

Kudos where richly due. I'm delighted to see a thread I had actually feared would be deleted
, about the sensitive nexus of fundamentalist Christianity and earthly power, close in on 100 comments and never once descend into vituperation. Nuanced disagreement, even principled difference of opinion, but no name-calling and no shit-flinging. It's a wonderful thing. Can we do this more often?

Earlier on AskMefi there was a question from "siahny" asking to identify a painting via email. I've got the picture (which is a Word document). The thread seems to be deleted, but should I post it up anyway? She really does want the painting identified...

RE: The FeistyFerret post below; are any Mefites interested in starting an e-mail campaign to get the kid on a big show, like David Letterman or The Tonight Show?
It may be a silly request but Chance is a cool and good kid. Maybe we can hook him up with a really cool late Christmas present.

It would be fun to have some sort of halloween contest next Tuesday. The most spirited post would win some sort of prize? What would the prize be? I suggest five pounds worth of candy shipped to the winning poster. What do you all think?

I've seen members ask about metafilter members with accounts on other sites like myspace, last.fm, and the like. I was just wondering if there are any members here with Deviant Art accounts, who'd share a link? I've been wandering about looking in the jewelery section and thought it would be nice to peek at and fav some of you guys from here.
Also? The spell checker isn't working in metatalk.

! Thanks again for the support!

How about a round of applause for skygazer
, missing member of mefi swapset grey from 11/05
who not only finally sent along the CDs, but included a short handwritten note, a tiny toy gun, an even smaller piece of black licorice, a guitar string, and a particularly meaningful (to me at least) blank postcard of early concept designs of the space shuttle.
All of this arrived in the mail in the midst of particularly bad week, so to receive a bit of human sharedness and new music to discover from a total stranger was great. My faith in mefi and humanity is restored. Thank you.

On metafilter, there is a bottom up approach to the policing of public space. Ie, citizens flag “bad” posts and then have meta discussions which really serve as trials by a peer group, if you will. The analogy breaks though because the jurors are not randomly selected and thus usually have a vested interest in the decision (which can lead to name calling, etc). Ultimately, these discussions are formed such that mathowie and jessamyn have moderating powers “in check” by the people. They can weigh in on the issues, make decisions, and face public scrutiny when a decision is made, especially if the decision is vastly unpopular. What are some of the other ways that you can think of to police public on-line spaces?

(not sure this should go in AskMe. It's a bit chatty, so please pardon me if I got the wrong forum.)
Since I found the Sci-Fi thread
so compelling I had a thought. Would you serious fans pony up, say, five bucks a piece, to help get a movie made if a studio was willing to match funds? And if it didn't get done, then you'd get your money back? Maybe done through an escrow account? I know that for the right production I'd pony up a lot more than that. Just wondering if you guys would.

Educated MeFites: (This is for my wife who teaches at an inner-city elementary school.)
Would anyone be willing to write a "properly written" paragraph about how your education has greatly benefited you?
We would like to inspire our 5th graders, most of whom believe that learning isn't cool. This is for English language learners, ie. Mexican, Vietnamese, Eastern European, etc, who are just now learning paragraphs and the need for further education.
Post here or my e-mail is in my profile.
Disclaimer: Meta-related because you folks are cool and smart. This is not a project or an AskMe, unless you suggest otherwise.

(It's also an example of why hit-and-run doesn't work. I know there are people who join purely for AskMe, but that still feels sleazy: most users have certain good faith assumptions, and it feels like they're being taken advantage of by these mongs.)
