Help me see this youtube video in Canada.

The youtube video in this FPP is not available in my country (Canada) due to copyright restrictions. I've watched it before and would like to watch it again. Can someone either point me to it somewhere else online where it might work (maybe on youtube at another account), or at least tell me the proper title or some info I can use to search myself? Thanks.

Yuoko.com & ©

It's inevitable, so I'll bring it up: the copyright-defying This American Life via Yuoko.com post. Let's talk, shall we? Yes, we've done this before with stavros' huge post some time ago. Part of the point of the new post is the very interesting debate about 'video on global demand (as the title has it) in the context of copyright and authorial remuneration.

So of course this is worth talking about in the context of Metafilter, too, and in terms of what we feel comfortable with. I guess my own chief motivation for posting this to metatalk was this: I kinda like This American Life, and it just so happens that the DVDs of these episodes are already commercially available. I personally adopt the rule of a torrent site that I frequent; if I like a show, and if it's commercially available, I don't spread it around as I'd like it to continue and I'd like it to see the revenue from whatever good it's done.

So the question: do we like skirting copyright on the front page like this? Do we feel comfortable not only ducking around the law but around helping out our own favorite shows as well? What do we think?

We have always been at war with the DMCA....

What is MeFi policy on linking to material that is copyrighted in the US? If we don't have one, did I inadvertently do something that might cause a problem for mathowie? I linked to a couple of Orwell novels hosted at another site in this post. The books are apparently under current copyright in the US (where MetaFilter's servers are,) and the UK. The FAQ doesn't address the issue.

FWIW, I do know that this has been a hotly debated topic for years, especially since the AP / blogger fiasco. I'm not really looking to rehash whether linking to such materials is morally acceptable.

wanna come over and watch a movie?

I download what I imagine might be legally construed as "copyrighted material" all thie time. But I'm actually upset with this post because I know some people that worked on US v. John Lennon. (Double standard, I know.) So are there any guidelines about posting full-length, copyrighted movies? Is this post this even in good taste? Where's the context? Does it have any intent other than to illegally distribute a movie? Is this even a problem?

Can I Legally Post This To MeFi Music?

Sometime in the early nineties a now long lost friend of mine recorded a cd. I can't seem to locate him and it's been quite a few years since we last talked. I found a copy of his cd and want to post a few of his songs to MeFi Music. (I love the cheesy pop-techno sound of a few of these tunes and the memories they bring back.)

I "played" on stage with him (keyboard flourishes...very minimal playing on my part) and spent many hours in the studio with him on more than one occasion during the recording of said cd.

Given that information, would posting the songs be an OK thing to do? Are there legal issues?

Copy(left/right)

What's the deal with posting songs on AskMeFi? I've contacted some users to ask if I can sample something of theirs, and while I have no problem doing this (and will continue to ask), I think it would be neat to be able to specific a creative commons (or other more restrictive) licenses. I know they could simply specify themselves, but it would be nice to make things unambiguous by default.

Not hugely important, but I think it would be helpful.

FPPs to Copyrighted Material

Is there a definite rule about not FPPing links to possibly copyrighted material? As Viacom noticed there's a lot of videos on YouTube that probably shouldn't be there, and I'm unsure if we're allowed to include such things in posts.

So, this FPP linking to a copyrighted movie is ok, but this one discussing how to download music in a place where it's legal to do so is not. I am posting this thread to let you know that I will be studying MetaFilter this semester for an e-communities class project. My term paper will describe MetaFilter’s purpose, the technologies used, roles, identifiers and identities, intergroup relations, norms of behavior, and governance mechanisms. For more information about the course, see http://www.si.umich.edu/~presnick/courses/winter03/684/
Would it be hard to offer users to option of putting their posts under a Creative Commons license? Users that go for it could have a (cc) link (to the license they chose) put in the byline of their posts.

Just a bit more copyright-friendly.

Let me tread carefully here. Is there a legit way people could post entire articles that require payed subscription (Atlantic, Salon, TNR, etc.) for the rest of us who have no subscriptions?
