After the EPIC MEETUP FAIL that was this weekend's DC meetup, there seems to be interest in trying again next month. Saturday December 5, 6pm at H Street Country Club. Can I get a hell yeah? Let's hook up in DC on Saturday night, 7-Nov. WHO'S WITH ME! [Cue Sound FX: Crickets.] I don't know where, because I've never done this before, but anywhere in the city with Metro access is fine. I would guess the venue depends on the number of people who [claim they] want to go. Somewhere that allows 18-year-olds in would be good--that was one of the criteria for the last one I went to. Suggestions? Anyone? Bueller?

DC Area Meet-up Plans!

Plans for future DC area meet-ups! Not to be outdone by Chicago, there have been conversations about the possibility of more frequent DC area meet-ups. The 10th was a fantastic time and I know that at the very least Bulgaroktonos and I would be thrilled to spend more time with all of you. Loto has very kindly taken the time to create a mailing list for upcoming DC MeFi events but as yet we have not had any activity on it (or possibly there has been some and it's just fallen into the void of e-mails I'm not getting). The idea of monthly meet-ups still sounds good to me; we will be around next weekend and the weekend afterwards and also the weekend after that but not the weekend of the 28th. If these sound good to anyone else, we should definitely make plans to do something as unfortunately we seem to have lost planning momentum after we all stopped checking the 10th threads so regularly. If anyone has any time/place requests (at least for us Red Line accessible is best but of course we are flexible to suit the needs of others) that sounds good. Hopefully we can arrange something so that we'll be able to get together again soon as the 10th was the best time I've had in a while. In summary, if we could figure out something for later in August as well as determine how often and where we would like to meet in the future that would be great. Thank you!

DC area meetup this weekend? Good morning!! There's been discussion of a pre-10th meetup meetup. (So we can be friends now instead of later and the 10th meetup will be even more awesome!!) Kinda short notice, but some people have prior obligations the following weekend, then we're into the holiday, so how about this weekend, Saturday or Sunday (20th, 21st)? Let's say DC or Virginia depending on who wishes to attend, and the standard bit about We Like Places Near Metro.

Attempted headcounts from last thread: 1, 2, 3. Numbers vary from 13-30+ and we apparently need a concrete number for the staff.

Inauguration meetup planning inside!

Hear Ye: Exploratory committee for the formation of an Inauguration Day meetup in/around DC. WHEREAS there are many MeFites in the DC and surrounding area, and WHEREAS these MeFites are likely super happy right now about the election of Barack Obama to President of the United States, and WHEREAS many more MeFites, their families and their friends may be making their way to DC to mark the historic occasion of the inauguration of Barack Obama, I hereby request we start planning a huge meetup for this momentous day. All in favor, say AYE. Disclaimer: I am making this request from far away from the center of activity. I have plane tix and a place to stay for the duration, but have been out of touch w/ the DC scene for long enough that I don't have any great suggestions for a meetup location, especially a spot for a meetup that may potentially be pretty large. Locals, please hope me! I'll do whatever I can from my faraway location to make it happen once we settle on a time and place. Also: If we can somehow assemble as a group for the parade/big moment itself, that would be awesome too, but perhaps a bit more of a challenge to organize.

MetaFilter Mini Meet Up Now With Live Vintage Blues at the Marco Polo in Georgetown

So, after many a should I or should I not, I should edges I should not just now and, so, I hereby present the concept of a mini meet up this coming Saturday, a meet up with the most excllent live vintage blues at the most excellent Marco Polo Bar & Grill down there on 4th Avenue in Georgetown, as alluded to here. The Phantoms of Soul are playing at the Marco Polo this next Saturday. I have had so much fun at meetups talking and listening to a bunch of very smart and funny people, people who I would otherwise never have met save for meeting them via MetaFilter. It is a recharge for the imaginal batteries to even barely follow the conversations when the conversations go well. No shit Sherlock. So, since this comes in the category of something cool to share in real life, I thought that I would lay it upon my own local 'Filterrestrials. Jack and band play from a deep book of blues standards from songster to jump. Or he will present sections of Jokermania, a tale of precocious hipster bluesmen in an alternate 1950s Seattle. The band is solid and rocking and the players come with jazz chops. I know I am not totally objective here but I have to tell you that this is the universal consensus among people I know who have heard them as well: They are really good. The Marco Polo apparently can provide good food--including their, ahem, famous pressure fried chicken--and beverages there, too. Back in the day, the bar itself was as venerable as anything in Georgetown, which would make it venerable as anywhere in Seattle. But it sounds like they have had quite the do over and vintage it is not no more. Quite a few people seem to like it all the same. Fine food, beverages and vintage blues at a picturesque locale: the concept has merit, says I.

Any other Washington, DC area Mefites taking part in this year's Artomatic? It's May 9 to June 15. I'd like to see your work and maybe meet. Registration is still open (800 artists so far). You should at least go and see it even if you're not taking part. I've got a nice spot on the 10th floor. In addition to visual arts, there'll be live music and plenty to drink at the bars.
