If I can turn off favorites, why can't I turn on deleted posts? I've been using Plutor's Greasemonkey deleted posts script and occasionally I browse Deleted Thread. I've come to appreciate the few posts that are deleted daily. But I can't see these posts when I search Metafilter or if I look at anybody's posting history, and I think this is wrong. The mods are doing a great job, and I believe they are the primary reason, along with the membership fee, that Metafilter hasn't become Digg or Reddit. My unscientific feeling is that they are very good at knocking out spam, removing doubles, and eliminating boring/nasty/jejune content. I understand that nothing good will come by allowing random spam nutjobs to have a big audience here. Nonetheless, as a non-novice user, I see no reason why every little post, bad or good, shouldn't be visible to me, assuming I find my way to the appropriate settings or scripts.

How Can You Tell It's a Self-Link?

How do the admins determine that a fpp is a self-link? I have the deleted post greasemonkey script, and I see a lot of posts getting deleted saying something like, "self-link, banned." How do you guys figure out what are self-links? Are people just dumb and include their full names in their mefi profile? I feel like there must be a method I'm missing.

Mass deletions? 79140, 79144, 79147 and 79149 are all showing as having been deleted but none of them are closed for comments or given a reason for closure. Is my Greasemonkey broken or is your Blue broken?

So ummm... Yeah, I'm pretty sure the OP of the thread below me was asking in a VERY creative way: Why is there a metafilter policy against telling others via postings what you received in MeMail? Easy on the trigger, cortex. Just because you CAN delete and end threads, doesn't mean you should.

This post should've been deleted within seconds after its posting. (1) Snow was neither important enough nor talented enough to warrant an obit thread here. He was just another cog in the Bush/Cheney Propaganda machine. Rush, Coulter & O'Reilly would rate an obit thread, but if Steve Doocy got hit by a bus? ORLY? (2) It upstages the post immediately before it, covering the death of the infinitely more worthy Dr. Michael Debakey. MeFi Music Uploading - Creative Commons license, please? Possible to replace or delete an uploaded song? I am about to upload my first humble song to MeFi music, and do not see anything protecting songs from commercial exploitation, or explaining about copyrights. Also, because this is for the music challenge, I'm uploading a slightly rough mix, and would like to clobber it if I have the time to fiddle with it some more before the end of June. Or what if we change our minds completely and want to yank a tune? I'm uploading the song, but would like to know these basics for any future attempts.

Not sure why the "Militarization of Consumer Companies" thread by five fresh fish was killed? It seemed to me like a legitimate discussion? Granted it was a one-link post to an LA Times Op-Ed piece (albeit an op-ed w/substanitive claims and subtantial, detailed factual data), but I've seen similar posts that were one-link to opinion pieces that were not deleted?

Can we please have an automatic deletion and/or penalty box for posts that get flagged for breaking guidelines by many users at times when no mod is online? I'm thinking of the Spammer that posted at 1:30 AM this morning, and how much I want him to be trampled to death by a pony. I know any automagic deletion system could potentially be gamed to censor worthy threads, but presumably a system could be set up where the mods could override any deletion in a fairly timely fashion. Plus any clickthrough on SPAM is too much in my opinion.

Earlier today I posted a question about MeFi (how to turn off background color) in the main Ask MeFi area, which appeared for a few minutes then vanished. Did it likely get moved somewhere else, or just censored? for being in the wrong place? for expressing (in mild terms) dislike of a Mefi feature (I can't see text on colored background). Or did it just vanish into the ether?

This thread sucks. The link doesn't jump down to the story, the subject matter isn't very funny or interesting, it's just stupid. The post is too long, the comments are pretty pointless. I would delete it, but it could create more trouble than it is worth. What should be done about sub-par links? Anything? Take the good with the bad?
