Don't Get the Delete High

Getting the dog high? Why wasn't the whole thing deleted? Letting any comments ride on that one is a slippery slope, I should think. Especially ones condoning it or speaking of giving a dog something toxic.

Moderation in moderating

What standards of consistency to moderators apply in redacting comments? Can anything give rise to standards? I ask not so much to seek the retention of my own comments; the world wouldn't be worse off if all of them were deleted. But I am flabbergasted at the inconsistency in treatment -- e.g., the comments on this thread -- and amazed that there's no attempt to explain or even to identify the party responsible.

Thanks for the lolcat deletion

Today, for the first time, I wished I could favorite a thread deletion justification. "This post was deleted for the following reason: im in ur over-trafficked meme, stating ur ironic deletion raisin" - cortex

Government conspiracy / coverup?

Why did the "what would the scientific name for zombies?" question on AskMe disappear yesterday?

If you dupe a deleted post, does it make a sound?

One is deleted because it has no link. The other is deleted because it's a dupe of the first. But can you dupe a deleted thread? Can you dupe a thread that has no link? Or is this just capitalist revisionism?

Why are links removed?

Could someone direct me to specific policies that state why posts are removed? I had one removed today because someone chose to use inappropriate language in a comment. The language use was apparently blamed on the article I posted. That is very strange. I don't know where the policy is that states what can and can't be posted.

This job post bugs me

This does not seem like an appropriate use of the jobs section. My attempt to flag it resulted in an error.

Candidate for deletion?

There's a thread in AskMefi that may be a candidate for deletion or at least expunging identifying info. It includes personal info of third parties and asks if a business is a "scam" with no evidence/logic. And after this inflammatory claim there is no follow-up by the OP.

healthy dialogue

Often there are questions posted to Ask Metafilter that have a similar format. The poster will have a general health problem, and will also be fat. In 95% of the cases, losing weight is the first step to solving the problem. Yet, this answer is often immedietly removed. Is it really so terrible to point out the elephant in the room? And, more pointedly, are we doing others a diservice by not being frank?

Unnecessary-ness

What happened to the thread of photos off the p2p networks? Did that link get removed for any particular reason? Was it to make room for the Zelda/Golden Ratio thread? Hmm. I am kind of disappointed.

Doubleplusgood doubleposting

Nevercalm deserves credit for anti-eponysterically advocating that his post, doubled five minutes later, be the one deleted. Mattamyn deserves credit, as usual, for not being blindly policy-bound.

Thank you for deleting this.

With all the MeTa'ing about why-did-you-delete-my-post, I feel sure this one will get challenged, too. But I just wanted to say excellent moderation there, w00t. Depressing-as-fuck does not equal best-of-the-web.

Christian Fundamentalism Post Should Stay

I object to the knee-jerk deletion of posts about Christian fundamentalism. I think it's an interesting issue, and should have a place on the site.

Isn't this post of mine not really an "XYZ sucks, amirite" question?

Isn't this post of mine not really an "XYZ sucks, amirite" question? Looking at the answers I think it's more asking about the lack of cultural awareness of him while he has such success in Britain. Could understand it being deleted for being open-ended, but not the 'amirite' part.

Were these posts deleted?

Did posts from the askmefi queue thing get deleted? I just noticed a post I was going to look back at later wasn't there, it was posted through the ask mefi queue thing posted to projects a few days ago.

Any hints?

LOL BUSH IS TEH ANTICHRIST - I did NOT say that! But close.

This post was deleted for the following reason: LOL BUSH IS TEH ANTICHRIST. whatever Care to translate that into an intelligible rationale? I didn't say Bush is the anti-Christ, violate Godwin's Law, or anything else. I thought the article made an interesting link between mental illness and certain political attitudes. But is there a daily limit to the number of FPPs perceived as "anti-Bush", or what? Help me out.

"post it at metachat" is not a good reason for deletion

I'd like to suggest that "um, yeah, post it at metachat." is not a good reason for deletion. Metachat may be all about the stupid links but saying this smacks of snobbery. This was simply a poor post that didn't meet metafilter's editorial guidelines. It wasn't chatty in the slightest. Metachat is not your dumping ground. Can't we all just get along?

Why was my post deleted?

I asked this question:

http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/51098

Why was the post deleted? It doesn't fall under any of the reasons for deletion given in the FAQ. The question isn't offensive or stupid - though I don't actually think that having either of these qualities neccessarily gets other questions tossed from Metafilter.

The reason given for the post deletion is this:

HYPOTHETICAL FILTER WTFFF

Are hypothetical questions not allowed? I find that really hard to believe.

So, with all due respect to the administrators of my absolute all-time favorite website, I ask - as you did: WTF?

thanks

Why was a question about Limbaugh's and Hannity's reaction to the election deleted?

Alright, this is just lame -- I asked a very specific question related to the election and it got deleted. I wanted to find a capsule summary of how Rush and Hannity were playing post-election as Wednesday programming opened. If my post is considered too redundant or inflammatory, fine, but telling me to go listen to the radio is kind of callous and rude. I said I missed the coverage and as it is, out where I live I don't even know if we get the shows. You all don't have to repost it; but I'm just kind of teed off.

Deletion Reason

I find the deletion reason for this thread to be insulting and in poor taste. Why not use your time instead to fix up your server, which has been slow and unresponsive for the past few days?

Dawkins should be discussed sometimes.

I was sorry to see this post on Dawkins get deleted becuase it was "yet another Dawkings post", when the one from three weeks earlier was deleted as well. I understand he's discussed alot, perhaps ad nauseum to some folks, but they can skip the post. I think the mistake being made here is that the same arguments will always be rehashed over and over. This disregards the fact that new people may have registered since the last time the topic was discussed.

In a very "meta" sense, the addition of new people to the discussion allows the argument to evolve, over the course of multiple debates. These kinds of topics - religion, rights, abortion, etc. - appear not to have objectively correct answers, however the passions on all sides and the articulation of arguments are a reflection of the community and our collective culture. By returning to the argument, with newer and older members we start to understand everyone's basis for their position, the forces that motivate the passions behind people's positions and give rise to the issue in the first place.

Deletion emails?

My FPP was deleted (not complaining; I agree with the reasoning). Aren't I supposed to get an email about this? I didn't. Forgive me if that's not the policy. I thought it was.

OK, it was a link to a google search, but why delete??

Itchy trigger finger? I liked that post, and it seems like everyone else who posted did too -- no-one seemed to be snarking or complaining or asking for it to go. Sure, it's a link to a Google search, but an interesting one I hadn't thought of before. It was headed for a fun interweb memories thread... but then it was tragically taken from us. As an official Metafilter King, I would urge you to reconsider.

Can anyone help me understand why this post was deleted?

Can anyone help me understand why this post was deleted? The admin note was a little cryptic (no offense). I've read the FAQ, as far as I can tell it doesn't fall under self linking, although it could perhaps kind of be considered a double posting or re-posting as it were. Anyway, it was a post I enjoyed originally, and I just wanted to point out to people that it was working again - didn't want to piss anybody off. Maybe stuff from MeFi Projects isn't supposed to be posted in the blue? Any input is appreciated.

Let's Discuss Marginally Illegal Questions

Why was my post deleted?

I stand (humbly) deleted. Of course, first I went to FAQs. Closest conceivable reason for deletion was - "axegrindfilter - you posted on a hot-button topic that you frequently post about and/or used heavy-handed editorializing language." Still, I don't think my post fit this bill, exactly: no "frequently post about" or "heavy-handed editorializing" to be found, far as I can tell. Was it simply linking to a site about atheism, period? Or to a site containing Jesus' quotations? I'm really curious about this. And hats off to LarryC for being right. I mean that. BTW, I'd link to the post in question, but it seems to have disappeared without a trace. Or maybe I just don't know how to find it?

Why were there so many deleted threads today?

What the heck happened to the front page today? I have the Mefi Deleted Posts GM script, and when I visited the home page today there's about 18 deleted threads in a two and a half hour period, including about 13 in a row. They all go to truly deleted (as opposed to merely masked, which is what I like about this GM script) threads. What the heck where these?

Request: the ability to retrieve a comment that was almost posted to a deleted thread.

A FPP rant was recently deleted after I began to compose my response. Hence, by the time I was ready to post, the thread was closed to new comments... and I lost several good paragraphs that I would have been content to post elsewhere. Respectfully request some scheme (redirection to Preview Page, for instance) whereby content is retrieveable in such a case.

Since warez/piracy answers are removed, why aren't illegal drug posts removed?

This may be a dumb question. If I remember correctly people have had their posts removed for suggesting warez/piracy/etc. as an answer to a AskMe post. If that's so, why are posts suggesting that the user take illegal drugs allowed? This is not to say I am antipersonaldrugchoice, but I want to know why the discrepancy.

Take my survey; I don't think so!

View my ads Take my poll. I have some difficulty judging what's appropriate for AskMe these days, so I played along until the ad thing came up. Putting Google ads on the user's (presumably specifically made for that thread) poll pages seems a bit out of line. What say?

Her banshee howling has me very confused, and yet wanting to laugh at the same time. I dare NOT. This whole time I have held laughter alternated with concern.

The funniest post I've read today. Deleted. Is it really a famous story I've never heard before, or is that an extremely itchy trigger finger on the deletion button?

Messy deletion?

This post was deleted for the following reason: what a mess

So that's the barometer now for thread deletion? It doesn't have a clear purpose, goal, or problem to be solved, is too chatty OR there's enough douchebags misbehaving in it?

This precedent sucks.

How many questions per AskMe are allowed?

25 answers, 3 users marked as favorite. Yet I get "please don't abuse ask me by asking 300 questions disguised as one" in my email. I didn't actually ask 300 questions, I asked for answers for the debunkable ones. The thread was doing quite well, and was quite informative before it was deleted.

Deletion of site with mostly different content?

My link to a site with a few hundred photographs gets deleted because it's supposedly a double of a 2-year old link to a post on some messageboard with but a few dozen similar pictures? What gives? (I've happily accepted the fate of unfortunate double posts in the past, but these links are not the same...)

Why are some goofy threads deleted, and not others?

Just out of curiosity, how is it that some posts get deleted because the thread is full of the same animated gifs we always see, and some posts continue to live way past their prime? Is it the presence of ceiling cat?
I understand some of these are left in for humor value; such was the case with the infamous Mushroom post. But when the only thing that's different is the original post, and there are no actual responses anyhow, what's the criteria?

Comment deletion in the religion thread.

Why can't you love your fellow man and be selfless, without needing to believe in a giant invisible wizard in the sky? This statement was attacked, defended, reconnected with the topic at hand, and was further clarified and apologized for by its author. But as of a few minutes ago, it no longer exists. This, my friends, is Chewbacca, and Chewbacca does not make sense.
