The place where there is no darkness

Anyone else get a kick out of "A celebration of Metafilter. A hello and best wishes to the mods and to the members, past and present: those whose accounts are closed, and those whose accounts will always be open. A post for the whole swirling, opinionated, crazy and beautiful community" being pre-emptively closed after 4 comments because it may fill with "snarls, snark and negativity"? That just struck me as really funny. Discuss.

Is the word "Cracker" acceptable on MetaFilter?

Is this comment really going to stand? I've seen way less questionable comments get deleted so I'm a little surprised that it's still around. I have to admit, it is clever, but I think this may set a precedent where you can use any slur as long as you do it in a clever enough manner.

Moderation on MeFi and NPR

"A 5-minute framework for fostering better conversations in comments sections." NPR's Matt Thompson interviews Jessamyn about why a thread about the assault on reporter Lara Logan turned so ugly on NPR's site, but didn't on the blue.

I call out myself.

Scuse the fuck outta me - (*)'s. Naw jon, you're just a bit of a douche. bardic, tell your mom I said thanks.. I submit that our experiment in civility and conversation is failing. And yeah, I'm part of the problem.

Can we call out the comment without calling out the commenter?

Have we at last completely abandoned any hope of civility and reasonable discourse on Metafilter? There's disagreement, and then there's constant, consistent patterns of personal attacks on anyone who disagrees with one in the slightest. Is there no line to be drawn, or is Matt on vacation? why conservatives tend to have a negative view of MeFi

Statements like this are part of the reason why conservatives tend to have a negative view of MeFi (more)

MetaFilter quality declines while stupidity is on the rise

Point CounterPoint - When I first came here, there was some serious discourse on topics. In the last year, this has simply decended into stupid banter (right-vs-left, SUV-vs-environment).

OK, the arguments are fine. However, the nature of the arguer has changed here on MeFi. No longer do we have people with a view. Now we get the reply post that goes after the poster and not the idea.

OK, I am tired. Been a long day and I can't really articulate this fully. In a short sentence: Mefi, despite the intelligence of its users, is looking pretty damn stupid these days.

Argue the point, not the person (or ideolgy)

(drawing concentric circles on my chest)
[Ok, I have only recently registered with MeFi. However, I have been online since the mid 80s, so cut me a little slack.]

I'm getting pretty sick of MetaFilter. Changes are coming very soon.

Just so you all know, I'm getting pretty sick of MetaFilter. Changes are coming very soon.

Big. assed. changes.

Call me mr. crankypants, but the level of discourse here is approaching an eighth grade level. Seriously. A lot of old timers say "it used to be so much better when..." and I hate to say it, but it's true. A long time ago*, people used to be a lot more respectful to others, people didn't attack each other, people of opposing viewpoints could bring their perspective to a topic and not just point out knee jerk political viewpoints and philosophies. Everyday I see the place getting more and more "mainstream" with all the closed minds and inflexible opinions that come with that.

Be prepared for the upcoming experiment at MetaFilter.

(I know I should just take a vacation from the site, but really, this place doesn't run on its own. I'm spending more time everyday here cleaning up self-posts, watching people attack each other, and banning IPs and accounts. So instead I'm making some huge changes.)

* - and don't go back into the archives and show me a year old thread that got ugly. I know the place used to be better overall, and you're not going to convince me of otherwise, okay?
