New MeFi Static Domain

We set up a new domain for hosting static content like scripts and images at mefi.us. You might want to add it to your NoScript whitelist. If you don't run the Firefox extension NoScript, you won't need to do anything at all.

This is one of several changes we're making in the background to improve the speed of the site. By moving static bits of the site to a non *.metafilter.com domain we can shave a few KBs of cookies flying around for elements of the page that don't require cookies. And by consolidating all of our previous static subdomains into a single domain, we can reduce the number of DNS requests/page. Everyone wins! (Unless you're running NoScript and actually have to do something in response to this change.)

Be careful what you wish for

Bug: If you set your prefs to show 99 days of posts, the front page shows 99 days of posts, thereby taking forever and making the server pretty unhappy, I bet. There should be some max built in there.

Suggestion: Set login cookie domains to ".metafilter.com" (note the two periods), so logins will work at metafilter.com, www.metafilter.com, and metatalk.metafilter.com.

Domain Hijacking and Metafilter

It turns out that MacSlash.com was no more "hijacked" than succaland.com was "stolen" (despite what it says in the MetaFilter sideblog). Like k10k.com and poetrysoc.com, they let their domain expire and it was snapped up. Leslie Harpold says that hoopla.com and smug.com hadn't expired, and Verisign has not contradicted her, but true domain hijackings don't seem all that common, do they?

lookin for chicago victim of verisign domain hijacking

Regarding the whole VeriSign domain hijacking debacle, I've interested a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times in doing a story on the problem. However, he needs a Chicago connection -- anyone know of a victim in Chicago/northern Illinois?
