Idea: Metafilter Link Checker (Needs a Fancier Name)

Idea: the Metafilter link-checker. Take the part of the 'new post' process that double-checks against prior posts, add the part of Mefi that conjures up the related posts, put a link to the feature up on the two lines of links near the logo. Maybe add auto-links to site-specific searches via Google and Yahoo just for convenience's sake. Yes, there are other ways to do it, including prepping a new post. But it'd make it a few degrees easier: as it stands now, in order to get to the part of the Mefi posting process that double-checks your link against doubles, you essentially have to write it up first, and THEN get it rejected for doublehood. This'd be a much easier way to quickly ascertain that something's a double before writing up a good post. And if the "related post" stuff was added to it, hopefully whatever algorithm's in use there might be able to give a clue as to whether the subject matter was handled before, even if the link itself wasn't a double.

My Askmefi question only recieved one answer...I realize that this must just happen every so often, but I'm wondering, a) how I might avoid it, and, b) can I ask the same question again in the hopes of getting more answers? I'm not a 100% clear on what metatalk is for, so I apologize in advance if this post is...inappropriate. If it's at all helpful, I was trying to get help tracking down arts related merit scholarships - it didn't seem like too obscure of a question...

I'm not suggesting a hard denial being applied to posts that have previously been posted somewhere else but having the site mention it to a poster who might not be aware his link isn't as fresh as thought. boingboing seems an obvious candidate for inclusion... yaynay?

Nice idea moving the comments over, mathowie. Thanks. Hopefully this will be a standard procedure for dupped threads. (PS, bug: when my url in the description started wth a single quote and ended with a double quote, the preview got very mangled.)

I had a problem. Now, it's happening all over again. Would it be bad form to bother the green for a second time? I thought I'd solved the problem by changing the MTU. Several months on, the site is refusing to load yet again but, this time, no amount of MTU changes has helped. Despite that, the problem has resurfaced in the exact same shape and form: same website, same traceroute results... Should I repost to the fp? ...or should I post to the question thread?

When I preview my inchoate FPP, the link search informs me that my links were found in three previous threads, but only sometimes. When those links are in the "description" box, the link search finds them in previous threads, but when I move some of my text (without altering it) to the "extended description" box, my next preview tells me that my URLs were not found in previous threads. Unrelated: there is a "Link Preview," but no "Reception Preview." Please create a utility that tells me whether or not people will like my post. Thanks!

Accessing the scan of existing posted URLS

My blushes at making a duplicate post to the blue have been spared more than once by the code which scans my proposed URLs and looks to see it there is an existing match. Phew! However I have only ever found a way of accessing this facility after having first of all composed a post to the point where I can preview it - hence wasting quite a lot of time. Is there a way to access this scan directly?

This is an example of a double that should have been left alone. There was a single post calling it a double followed by plenty of thoughtful comments from people who missed it the first time around. Indeed, the original thread (posted November 1, 2007) doesn't even link to the same story that nickyskye found. Plus the original is closed to new comments. Deleting doubles is great when the intention is to cull run away obit-filters or when similar posts are made within days of each other. However in this case it seems a little gratuitous as it squelched an otherwise fine thread.

New post form's URL search is broken. I made a double post yesterday. I searched for the URL in both the normal and printer friendly versions, using MetaFilter's new post form. In fact, if I go to the New Post form right now, and copy the link from Malor's original post, it reports: "The URLs you entered were not found in previous threads. You might want to check the search page for duplicates, just to be sure." Of course, I did some additional searching, like using Google's link: feature (along with site:metafilter.com) which also turned up nothing. I also tried clicking on my tags, but apparently Malor and I have different taste in tags. Summary: It's hard to avoid posting a double.

um, i don't really know what to do about this. and i've got no general prob with the mods. but, as you can see, one of the mods has posted a question that has been asked before. so . . . what happens now? does it get deleted? does the original get deleted? does the whole thing get ignored? are these even the droids that anyone is looking for? . . . just asking . . .

Why'd we go and kill this. Just because of this? (more inside) Ok, so it was posted in a good but obviously nebulous fpp. I think the clip warranted individual discussion. The earlier post just resulted in a fight over whether or not Zappa was worthwhile. Given what passes here, including a good number of quasi-double posts which lead to good discussions, i think that this was a viable post cut down too quick.

Just wondering what happened to my Metafilter post (why it got deleted). Did I do something wrong? I checked my email and there was no reason given over there too.
