www.metafilter.com appears to be down. I can access other subsites, but not the blue - just me?

Reddit will be
blacked out for 12 hours on January 18th in protest against SOPA. Will Metafilter be doing similar?

Am I crazy or is it strange that there's no posts since yesterday at 7:15 am on the blue, and the subfilters since before that? I'm just wondering if there's a problem or we've suddenly gone quiet or busy or what. I miss my mefi.

We're in the process of updating the server. You probably noticed about 20min of downtime and things may be up and down throughout this evening but should resume and hopefully be faster later today and tomorrow.

Uptime and performance have been awesome for me lately. In particular the days of long downtimes when the admins are asleep seem to be over. On behalf of UK mefites, thanks.

Why is metafilter so slow and crash-prone? I know it gets a huge amount of traffic, but what causes the regular outages? Do you guys need a new server or what? I can't think of another major site that experiences as much downtime as metafilter does. (i'm not criticizing, I know how difficult it is to run a site of this scale... just curiouis)

What is being done to curb the continuing amount of times that MetaFilter dies in the arse each day (e.g. when it's inaccessible)? Just wondering.

Is Metafilter still getting hammered a la
this thread? I notice that just about every day this week, I have been unable to reach mefi at all in the morning time (GMT, say 8am till roughly 11 or noon). I thought it might just be my net connection at work, but my home connection has the same issues whenever it appears to be down.
Are we just undergoing backups or some-such thing at this time? Or does Ireland just disconnect from MeFi every morning for some reason? :)

Sorry about the downtime today, it looks like some comment spammers were DoSing the box with requests for long-dead trackback URLs. After that was cleaned up, some other weird bugs kept the server unavailable for a few hours, but things should be back to normal now.

Is AskMe down? Can't get to it via comments or the main page, on firefox or IE, on two separate computers. This is a new one - I've never noticed just one segment of the site going down before.

Administrators! It seems to me that this website has been having a lot of downtime recently; well, this century. Do we know any more about what is causing it, and are there plans to combat this phantom menace?

Sorry for the downtime, I was tweaking one small aspect of the server when a comedy of errors ended up with two hours of hair pulling before the server was reachable once again. Everything should be back to normal now.

If my IP were blocked, would the symptoms be something like constantly getting a "Error Executing Database Query ... Server returned: No buffer space available (maximum connections reached?)" error, even though everyone else can connect just fine, until it occurs to me to ssh elsewhere and try connecting? At which point I get through fine?

I've been unable to view any part of Meta for the past four and a half hours today because of a "cannot connect to jrun server" error. Whilst this doesn't normally bother me (it is quite a frequent occurance) I find that most of the time other people are still able to continue posting during this 'outage'. So how come it is completely broken for me but not for everyone else?

Can I just make a frustration-vent post? These days it seems like MeFi is down constantly, several times a day, and to be honest... I'm getting to the point where I'm about ready to move on to another spot. The problem is that, for me, my main community site is like comfort food; it's a place that I can always pop into to see posts and comments from the people I know, and I can always fill in a time gap or soothe my real-life-related nerves by browsing there. But one of the things about comfort food is that it has to be easy and accessible, and lately, MeFi... isn't. So I have some questions...

I'm fairly new around these parts, so forgive me if this is stupid question, but why does MetaFilter occasionally just wink out of existence? This doesn't seem to happen to most of my other favorite sites.

Matt: when you setup status.metafilter.com, wasn't it supposed to be independent of the Mefi server? I don't get how come they were both down at the same time last night.

Anything we can do to help keep MeFi up? Because these frequent downtimes are annoying me. I need my MeFi in the morning more than coffee.

Is there any way we unfortunate non-Californians can help to ensure that MetaFilter becomes a 24-hour operation once more? [

Why the downtime? For the last week or so, Metafilter goes down at late morning GMT, and doesn't spring back to life until Late afternoon GMT. It seems too regular to be anything other than a deliberate act. Is it going to be a regular thing? How are us European MeFites going to waste time at work?

Hey, just curious if the reason this site tends to have downtime with relative frequency (it's not terrible or anything, but it's certainly more than any other popular site I check out) is a result of the ISP it's hosted at, or the server it's running on...
I'm not asking to be a jerk or anything, I'm just curious, since I have a 1u server colocated somewhere myself, and am moving it to a new facility soon etc.. so network / hosting / downtime issues pique my interest...

So alas, one of the processor fans in the MetaFilter server decided to up and die, which coincided perfectly with a planned vacation to New York. Upon coming back, no replacement fan was to be found on my doorstep (due to stupid delayed shipping by the company from whom the replacement was ordered), so a trip to CompUSA later, we're back in business. Sorry 'bout that.

MetaFilter, MetaTalk, and Ask Metafilter might be sporadic over the next day or so, as the server hosting the DNS has died for now. Hopefully that server will be back tomorrow morning, but if not, you could hack your hosts file to point the three domains at 209.10.108.201.
If you see the sites unreachable by morning, that's why.

Uptime will probably be sporadic over the next few days while I do some software and hardware upgrades. On the upside, I get to bask in
the glow of the server while I do the upgrades.

I tried to load up metafilter earlier and it was taking a while. I noticed at the bottom of my explorer window it said something like "Opening page http://www.b4ta.com/metafilter" Then the page failed to load entirely. I'm confused.

MeTa seems very slow today and MeFi isn't half as zippy as usual. Instead of starting bothersome "Is it only me?" threads like this one, is there a way users can determine for themselves whether it's the server's fault or something else?
