Comment Editing

We just added the ability to edit comments for five minutes across all MetaFilter sites. Once you add a comment, you'll see this note in the comment byline: 'Need to fix typos? Edit.' You can click 'Edit' to bring up a form where you can fix any typos and resubmit your comment. There's a timer on the edit page to let you know how much time you have to fix things up. As always, if you want to fix something past the five minute window—or if you want to remove your comment completely—please let us know via the contact form. The five-minute edit window should be used for small changes. We track the changes on our end, and we'll be keeping an eye on how folks use this feature. Please let us know about any bugs you run into here. If you can include your browser and OS versions that'll be a big help.

This is a genuine query not a complaint - does anyone else read a lot of AskMeFi questions, think they could perhaps help, then when they look 'over the fold' get put off by the huge bulk of further details? I realise that often these questions are places for people to think 'out loud' and work through their problem while they ask for help, esp. in relationship questions. However I am finding more and more that I just can't get through the verbiage, either because it all feel histrionic, or unwarranted, or (and feel free to judge me) melodramatic to add so much 'I'm a special snowflake' detail. Or just genuinely tl:dr. The reason I ask is because if I am the only one, so be it, no harm done. But if there are a lot of questions not getting the attention they probably could because it ends up being tl:dr, could there perhaps be some more guidance about keeping it short, as in maybe added to '- Open-ended chatty questions that don't offer a problem to be solved.'

Desjardins suggested an edit for your answer to "How do I properly bury the body?" Quora has this neat feature where other readers can suggest an edit to your comments. Whether you implement the edit or not is up to you, the original writer of the comment. Here's an example, with the supposed error marked in red and the suggested change in green. Could such a feature be added to the entire MetaFilter site at some point?

Whatever happened to introducing a three-minute edit window for comments? We've talked about this in the past and it seemed like it was at the brink of adoption- It would be a pretty useful feature.

What say ye of the edit window?

What, dear friends, of the edit window? This is something we've discussed in MetaTalk a few times over the past couple of years. We've also tried it out at least once in a thread dedicated to the purpose. Has there been any evolution in the mod perspective on this pretty pony, or has he been put out to pasture permanently?

I realize we have sort of a policy of not editing posts, but is there any chance an update could be added to the NY Marriage Equality post? Because honestly, I felt pretty good reading the first 200-or-so comments and the letdown really sucked. Also, I sounded like a moron when I proclaimed victory to a friend only to find out many comments later that I was completely wrong.

Whatever happened to the "Timed Editing" feature allowing corrections on comments/posts for 3 minutes after posting (pre-announced and tested here in December 2008)? Was it officially canceled, filed and forgotten, or implemented but Wendell's too stupid to figure out how to use it?

Google has once again updated its Chrome browser, and as I seem to remember happening before, the little buttons have disappeared from Metafilter's edit window, that allow you to easily create bold, italic text or a link.

Help Us Test Timed Editing

We're considering a new feature and could use some help kicking the tires. We're thinking about adding timed editing to the site. So once you post a comment you'd have three minutes to make changes before they're set in stone. We set up a special thread to test this feature here: Editing Window Test The thread has more info about how timed editing works. You need to have JavaScript enabled to see the new edit link next to your comment. Discussing bugs and the feature itself will probably be easier here than in the test thread. Can I haz a pomy^D^Dny? 60 second editing. Hey guys, It would be super duper if Meta would implement a feature like Digg has where I can post a comment, and then for the next 60 seconds or so (even say 3 minutes) I can edit that post. I frequently find myself thinking OH YEA! after I post, and adding a short amendment to my original post.

Rethinking comment deletion

I'm seeing a lot of very eloquent responses to AskMe questions getting deleted. Some of them are very long, and while they could be thought of as containing some offending material, the whole comments are being deleted. I want to propose and discuss just removing the offensive parts -- editing out sentences or paragraphs, and not entire comments, so that the "good stuff" can remain. And maybe there is just too much hacking and slashing. Looking at an AskMe thread, you can sometimes see remnants of previous comments in what people copy and paste in their own comments, but the originals have been deleted. And sometimes this can be quite disorienting.

Comment editing: Is it a pony in the works for some day or will it never ever happen? In the past, I know there has been some discussion about comment editing, and many on the site were opposed to it. Was the idea thoroughly shot down, or is it still a possibility. One of the concerns seemed to be that people would edit their comments to completely change their meaning. If we did allow comment editing, what if a copy of the original version were saved, and could be viewed by users who are interested in seeing the original unedited version.

I bought my project (on MeFi Projects) its own domain. Can I (or Mattamyn) edit the old post to reflect the new domain, or may I repost it? Or should I just live with the redirect?

How difficult would it be to program an edit function into our comments that allows us to revise our contributions within 1-5 minutes of posting it? I think it'd be a very cool thing to have for us OCD types that apologize after we spell something wrong and immediately correct ourselves in the next comment. Also, it could serve as a conscience (you post something, you regret it immediately, and get rid of it). Note, I'm not asking for unlimited editing. Only the ability to edit within 1-5 minutes of your original post.

Temporary comment editing?
I'm sure this has been brought up before but......It would be nice to be able to edit one's comments for a short period after posting. Not for very long, obviously, but long enough to fix glaring errors or spelling mistakes.

Jessamyn's edit is really bothering me. There were a few remarks (mine among them) below this, calling attention to it, but Matt closed the thread without addressing this issue. Can we see no more editing for content please? Let posts/comments stand or be deleted, but this middle ground is too slippery a slope.

My bad: this post is probably worded a bit awkwardly; should probably be something more like "commerce clause grants congress the exclusive power to regulate interstate commerce" or something like that. Point being that other bodies (e.g. state legislatures) aren't allowed. If clear enough, let it sit. Thanks.
