fat hate is ugly

The overwhelming majority of fat people have made the choice to not do what is necessary to change a situation which is hazardous to their health, wasteful of resources, and visually repellent. The idea of "fat pride" is ludicrous. It's like being proud of drinking until you get cirrhosis of the liver, or smoking until you get emphysema, or whoremongering until your brain rots from syphilis. It's like "meth addict pride".

People who are discriminated against for their weight are obese. Obesity is a medical condition, and while no one should be discriminated against for it, it's ludicrous in the extreme to want to form a pride movement to honor that obesity. This is a medical condition that should be avoided and fought against

i stand amazed at (some members of) metafilter's ugly ignorance. i have noticed this undercurrent before of self-righteous nastiness toward fat people. never have i seen it so blatantly expressed in one thread. PEOPLE: IT IS NOT OKAY TO HATE ON FAT PEOPLE. if you think people choose to be fat, if you think fat people need to hear your disgust at their fatness, if you feel superior to fat people because you are not fat, if you think fat people are fat because they are lazy, immoral pigs, YOU ARE COMPLETELY FUCKING WRONG. sorry for yelling... it's just, damn, that is some ugly shit in that thread. those of you that expressed disdainful sentiments about the fat -- i encourage you to say that stuff out loud, even to yourself, or go ahead, say it to an overweight loved one. do you hear yourself?

I thought we were progressive

Normally I don't say anything, but... the discussion about fat folks forced to fly on SouthWest and whether we need to buy another ticket on ask strikes me as fat bashing, which is not really what the poster asked for. The poster asked for whether fat folks who flew Southwest had to buy the 2nd ticket, not for advice about flying etiquette nor to hear again from non-fat folks whether she should buy a second ticket for their sakes.

I am pretty disgusted by some of the folks' reactions to folks not fitting in airplane seats and what etiquette their version is. My level of disgust is not quite high enough for me to want to leave Ask, but it's close. Maybe I'll just avoid these sorts of topics in the future.

I personally think it's the airline's fault for treating us like sardines, not the individual passengers' faults for not fitting in the tin.

I think it's rude to not just deal with the situation you're dealt, fat or skinny. Sometimes folks are big. Sometimes folks are drunk, sometimes folks fall asleep and knock drinks into your lap. Sometimes folks are rude. Sometimes you have an inconsolable child within 1 seat of you. Sometimes they kick the back of your seat. A lot. It sucks that you get crowded, but I don't think it sucks enough that you have to tell other flyers to buy second seats.

Why not rage instead against the airlines' injustice instead of perpetuating that injustice and using it to be crappy to someone else? This is how we change the world, people, by not buying into the bullshit.

healthy dialogue

Often there are questions posted to Ask Metafilter that have a similar format. The poster will have a general health problem, and will also be fat. In 95% of the cases, losing weight is the first step to solving the problem. Yet, this answer is often immedietly removed. Is it really so terrible to point out the elephant in the room? And, more pointedly, are we doing others a diservice by not being frank?

Enought with the fat haters already. The post was cute, was it really neccessary to mock the photographer's appearance?

discussion not as expected; how to improve?

I'm kind of dissapointed with the way things turned out in a post I made to Metafilter yesterday. I was hoping to discuss how many of the leaders of the fat acceptance movement are feeders and the consequences this might have in terms of it's future progress. Oh and I also wanted to discuss the new slate piece I linked to. But of 140+ comments, very few seem to even reference the links I made. Most just gave their opinion on fat people . I read all of the comments, and the general consensus seems to be that topics regarding obesity cannot be discussed sensibly at Metafilter. What should I do in the future to make a better FPP and what other topics should I wholly avoid?

yuckkkkkkkkkkkkk

23324 - The Grand Cabaret : apparently deleted because "It's just you. Really." Are we saying that it was deleted because everyone disagreed with the poster (they didn't) or because it was likely to offend people (which many other threads risk).

Personally, my brain can't cope when The Sun can run a sensible article about bigger women while MetaFilter responds with "yuckkkkkkkkkkkkk".
