Feature request: Keep track of which comments are new to a post since I last read it. I just gave up trying to implement this myself with greasemonkey and local storage options present in some of the newer fangled browsers. Having failed utterly, I'd really like it if there was some little horizontal rule inserted after the previously newest comment or something letting me know at which point in the list of comments ones that are new since my last visit are. I waste a lot of time sort of scrolling down, reading parts of ones that look new, scrolling up, until I find one I recognize so I can start following down from that comment again. I often don't like to miss comments. Does this seem feasible? Or is there some work around that can get me this? One idea I came up with that would not contribute to the comment quality at metafilter is to require myself that I leave some stupid comment every time I read and come back to a post, so that I can easily go through my activity and find where I was last. I sincerely apologize if this has been brought up before or if there's a known easy way to do this. I searched hard, I think.

If an FPP about a member (even if they happen to be famous) is posted, but it doesn't provide any fruitful information for others to right a situation where they feel they have been overcharged, then why is it allowed?

Recent Activity bug report

Minor Recent Activity bug within: If I remove all my comments under the "My Comments" tab in Recent Activity it seems to break the footer and remove the ability to manage recent posts. You will need to navigate away from the tab and then back to it to reveal the bug. (FF 3.0.10 & Safari 3.2.1, OSX 10.4.11)

Who are the people in your contacts list?

We made a few changes to the contacts page. The contacts page has a few new features. The biggest change is that your list of contacts and the list of members who have you as a contact (we're calling contacted by) are now on two different tabs. Here's an example: mathowie's contacts, mathowie's contacted by. Also, within the contacts list you now have the option of viewing them two different ways: compact and full. You can switch views with the View link at the top right of the page. The compact (default) view is very similar to the old view, plus: - mutual contacts are highlighted - you can filter the page by relationship (click a relationship to filter to that type of contact) - you can filter by new contacts that added you in the last month (click show new at the top of the page) The full view adds everything from the compact plus: - profile photos from your contacts - quick links to edit/delete/mail people on mouseover of their icon - real name and location from their profile When you change views from full to compact (or vice versa), a cookie is set to remember your preference. The final change is the activity tab, which is essentially the same thing you see for your contacts' activity in Recent Activity. The difference is that this is now public, so you can check out mathowie's contacts' activity (minus filtering and who's adding who among his contacts). This is hot from the code factory so there are bound to be bugs. Please post them here as you find them, thanks!

Has code been added to "fix" "invalid" HTML? I just previewed a post which had a few unclosed <li> tags (perfectly legal under the HTML 4.0 Transitional Doctype) and when I previewed, it "fixed" my HTML by stacking a bunch of closing tags at the end. That is, it found

<ul>
  <li>foo
  <li>bar
  <li>baz
  </ul>

and "corrected" it to

<ul>
  <li>foo
  <li>bar
  <li>baz
  </li></li></li>
</ul>

Which, I'm going to go with, bad idea.

Searching for users by email address?

I tried to gift a membership to a minor internet celebrity, but I got the message "It appears your friend already has an account, as this email address is in use". Really? That's cool -- now who is it? Can there be a way of entering in an address and getting a username back, so I can add that account to my contacts?

More inside everywhere! Well, not technically everywhere, but the blue, Metatalk, and Music now have a [more inside] option when posting. (This has been available at AskMeFi for quite a while already.) No need to add to your own "more inside", "after the jump", or "below the fold"; [more inside] will be a appended to the post if an extended description is available. As always, bugs are probably lurking, and I know there are sections of the site that aren't expecting [more inside] yet, but we'll update/fix as we go.

Hey look, it's MeFi Jobs. Use it to list jobs you'd like to hire other MeFi members for. Also, it helps if you have a lat/lon stored in your profile, as you will be able to see how far listed jobs are from you. There are probably a few obvious bugs but me and pb will do our best to squash them as fast as you can list them.

Your user page now tells you how many of your contributions were saved as favorites by others, and there's a page showing you the favorites. Yes, I'm aware that the stuff saved as a favorite by multiple people gets repeated. I'll fix that this week. For the moment, it at least gives you an insight into what others liked that you wrote. Here's my user page showing 148 things I wrote were saved as favorites, and here they are.

Suggested Feature: Subscribe to Posts

I would love a feature that allows you to "subscribe" to certain posts, coupled with the ability to view all "subscribed" posts. This way it would be easier to track the progress of certain threads that you do not participate in (you can obviously track those threads through the "my comments" page.

I'm sure this has been brought up before but......It would be nice to be able to edit one's comments for a short period after posting. Not for very long, obviously, but long enough to fix glaring errors or spelling mistakes.

Pony Request: A MetaFilter FAQ whose answers are links to the relavent MetaTalk threads that answer the question.

Many redundant questions keep coming up in MetaTalk and the responses are usually links to MetaTalk threads that will answer the question. Would it be possible to make a FAQ that points to the appropriate MetaTalk threads for these reoccurring questions? Maybe someone can go through MetaTalk once a week and add the questions and answers of things that shouldn't have to come up again.

Can we get another way to pay for accounts then paypal? I'd rather pay $20 for an account through another service then use them. There are several, relatively cheap credit card transaction services out there.

AskMe Categorization Request

Regarding http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/22795. So clearly the word "cult" went to my head when trying to categorize that question. But really, what would have been the right thing to have filed it under? It seems there should be a multiple categorizing feature at Metafilter. You know for things like Religion and Philosophy/Media and Arts. Basically having question/posts show up in both categories. Another example being this very question which is both a Feature Request as well as Etiquette/Policy. Peace.
