Music pony requests: Add date posted for each track in Most (Favorited|Playlisted) Tracks of All Time and increase the length of these lists. The 'Most' lists are great, but I've already listened to most of those tracks (they're mostly older). Few tracks are going to get favorited more than the current lowest-number-of-favorites track, which has 50 favorites. SO THE PONIES: (1) more tracks so newer things can show up on that list (2) dates so it's easier to find the new stuff.

i need feedback/help and don't know if mefi is appropriate.

I'm trying to get feedback/helpers on a collaborative Google Map of bike paths in the Boston area. It's pretty small and unambitious, hardly something I've spent "a few months" on. Is this appropriate for MeFi Projects? Hi,

So I'm slowly - very slowly - trying to build a bike path map of the Boston area with some details and comments about specific roads since Boston's transportation systems are so crazy and unpredictable that simple color-coding usually doesn't do the city justice.

I'd love to get some feedback as to whether this project is even a good idea, and if others think it is, to hopefully attract people who'd like to collaborate.

This is hardly a "significant work" or "the type of things that typically take a few months to design, create, and build" as the projects FAQ lays out. I've only spent a few hours on it, but theoretically with enough people it could be a significant creation. At the same time, I don't want to be self-linking to ask if this is even a good idea in Ask MeFi.

So what do I do? Ask for feedback in Ask MeFi without self-linking? Post in Projects anyway? Slink off?

Miniature Flag-Waving Pony

How about letting posters see that their posts have been flagged? I realise that the flagging system as it currently applies is a vehicle for bringing objectionable content to the attention of the moderators, but could it usefully serve as feedback for the poster?

To be more specific, would it be possible (or desirable) for posters to be able to see an anonymised summary of any flags associated with their own posts? My thinking is that this might help reduce the noise created by people both flagging and commenting when they see something objectionable.

MetaMovies

The Future of MeFiMusic: Video? Hello there. I'm inquiring into the possibility of incorporating video into MeFiMusic at some point in the foreseeable future. I understand video files are substantially larger than mp3s, and excuse my utter lack of computer knowledge, but is there a way to process them down the way YouTube does? I know MetaFilter's bandwith resources are significantly limited to that of an interweb empire like YouTube's, but it'd be neat to put moving faces to the moving music of our recording mefites. I can see this working with AskMeFi as well, allowing members to record little videos of themselves asking questions and demonstrating their queries with additional visual support.

"Can I make a wedding ring from this?"
"Should I wear this red dress or this green dress to my dreaded High School reunion?"
"What the hell is this weird rash on my ass?"

Reading through the questions on AskMeFi, I can see that many of them would benefit from a feature of this sort. Be that as it may, I see the contra argument as well, for who in their right mind wants to see an assrash. Regardless, am I in the realm of MeFantasy here? If it's impossible to actualize today, is this something we may see in say, three years from now?

Ringtones on Music

The Punch 'Em In The Dick thread contained this, which made me set up and post this, and wonder if ringtone downloads could be a cool feature to add to Music. This feature would give musicians the option of uploading a ringtone version of their song and assigning it a keyword. The keyword would be displayed with their post and anyone could text "mefi" + keyword to 41411 to download the ringtone to their phone.

It's fairly trivial to set up with textmarks.com, but it's USA only. I think there are other sites that do the same for the UK and other countries.

The Punch 'Em In The Dick ringtone has had 40 requests so far.

User tags question

Is there a way of viewing the tags a user has used on posts that's a little more in depth than the Top 10 Tags on the Profile page? (It seems like the sort of thing that should be there but I'm not seeing it. If it's not there I guess this could be considered a pony request for a "view all tags" link on the profile page.)

More than 10 posts on Mefi Mobile

Mefi Mobile Pony: Can we get more than 10 posts on mobile.metafilter.com? I know mobile.mefi is intended for the iPhone, but it's been working great on my Sony Clie UX50 with Opera Mini. It would be really great if we could see more than the first 10 posts though - would that be difficult to implement? (FWIW, the regular version of Mefi displays fine on my device, but the mobile version feels a bit nicer on the small screen, and loads quicker too).

Important feature proposal for FPP process

Pony request - auto ban for cracked.com posts Details of the proposed feature:

Upon submission of an FPP the Link URL, description and extended description will be checked for links to URLs within the cracked.com domain. If they are found the following action will be taken:

* The post will be deleted.
* The user making the post will be immediately banned.
* The users $5 will be forfeit.

Please note:

* No warning will be given.
* This feature should not be documented.
* Any explanation will be harsh, unforgiving and impersonal in tone. There may not be an explanation at all.

If no link to cracked.com is found the FPP submission will proceed as normal.

I believe the above feature to be not only desirable, but essential.

Meetup! What time? Where?

Small Meetup Functionality Request: Allow the Meetup thread poster to highlight the post which contains the agreed upon Place and Time? Maybe its just me but it takes me a while to parse through all the suggested places and times in the thread to get to the place where there was some sort of consensus. Perhaps the post(s) which contain that info could be highlighted in the same way that Best Answer is highlighted on the green?

Can I have a shiny new pony tomorrow?

With members flaming out in rapid succession recently (and I know that people do this all the time, but we seem to have a cluster right now), how difficult would it be for The Button to require email verification, say 24 hours after it is hit, before an account is actually closed? In other words, once the button is hit, an email goes out the next day, and you enter a code or your user name or "please unsubscribe me" to actually close the account.

That way, if after the cooling-off period someone decides he/she was a little rash in quitting Mefi, there's less embarrassment all around because they simply don't verify and come back the next day. Also, as pushing the button itself wouldn't really be final, the flameouts we did have would at least be well-thought-out and more entertaining, as folks would have 24 hours to compose them.

I want a hand-carved wooden unicorn pony, please!

Searching For A Heart Of Gold

So Matt said "Full text search is in the works right now, and will be rolled out soon." Yayhooray! This is the part where I annoy him and pb and make their lives more difficult by asking everybody about their dream search features (and slip in a request or seven of my own). I can't remember all the stuff I've begged for over the years in terms of search, but a couple of things I'd really like to see, off the top of my head:

Search by user (even if it's only myself): I'd like to be able to, say, find something somebody (or I) said way back when that I can sorta recall, so I can use the new favoriting system to bookmark it, say. Please please please.

Search with optional date restrictions

Search by subsite

Search comments only by subsite

Search posts only by subsite

Search user pages (including 'private' info if logged-in)

Search URLs

Search BUTTS LOL

So, what Search features are you hankering for? Matt and pb will probably just build whatever they want to, which is fine, but it can't hurt if they have some idea of what the most-wanted features might be...

Favoriting users

Favoriting users? Is there a way to favorite individual users so we can follow their posts, without actually linking to them? There are some people whose comments I really like to read, but I would feel creepy linking to them, because I don't personally know them or have any kind of online rapport with them.
Is this possible? If not, could it be? Would anyone else be into this?

When I am interested in ongoing threads or participating in a discussion, I will frequently check back to see if there are new comments after the one I just posted. However, there is a time limit or something on how often the "new comment" message updates.
Connect MeTa threads directly to the original threads that inspired them?

It would be extremely beneficial to be able to connect MeTa threads directly to the original threads that inspired them.

When someone posts an innappropriate/poorly formatted/whatever thread, calling it out in thread gets it sidetracked, but they are unlikely to ever see the MeTa thread, and flagging for deletion isn't always the best solution. This way you could simply create a 'linked' MeTa thread, a link would popup in the initial thread (directly under headline on inside?) and discussion ABOUT the thread could take place there. Similar to the way wikipedia treats neutrality disputes, etc.

Idea: what if the "New Post" and "New Question" links vanish-or change to say "You are ineligible to post"-when you aren't eligible? That would eliminate a lot of the "Oh lemme ax metafilter about that." ...*click*... "Sweet Lady Marmalade! I can't yet!"

Then when you're allowed again they change back to normal.

Is it possible to gift someone a membership? I have a friend sorely in need of a MeFi lifestyle awakening, but haven't seen a way to make this happen.

Discussion area in MeFi Music?

How about a discussion area in MeFi Music for members to set up collaborations? There's a lot of talent among the members, and I think it would be pretty cool to have the opportunity to collaborate with people across the world.

Sharing Nintendo DS Friend Codes

Hey Matt! You own a Nintendo DS, just like I do. Infact, Metafilter has several DS owners, as this question of mine revealed. The thing is, we're not playing each other online as we damn well should be. So how about adding a field or two on our preferences pages to allow us to prominently advertise our Friend Codes? It's been talked about before. Let's make it happen.
