Hey meetup fans, we have a new iCalendar Meetups Subscription location. For the past couple of days we've had trouble with the service hosting our iCal subscription file so we switched to a locally-hosted version. We're going to keep the old iCal URL active for as long as we can, but it's been flaky so we recommend updating your iCal subscription to this URL: webcal://metatalk.metafilter.com/meetup-ics.mefi.

MetaFilter Feeds Glitch

You might see old MetaFilter posts or comments showing up as new in Google Reader thanks to a new year glitch we fixed today. Here's the glitch: every post or comment that flows out in RSS feeds has a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) that news readers like Google Reader use to identify items. As part of this identifier, MetaFilter was using the current year instead of the year associated with the original post or comment. So when the year rolled over yesterday, hilarity ensued. Not quite Zune-levels of hilarity, but enough to be embarrassed about. Google saw the new IDs for these old items and presented the items as new. Sorry about that. We've had a good number of questions about this and want to let everyone know that 2009 (and beyond) will be filled with permanent, non-changing GUIDs.

Two new features, feeds and more feeds

Two new features: resolved question sidebar (and feed) and RSS feeds for the Popular favorites page. All is explained within. We've noticed and sort of helped push the ad-hoc use of the "resolved" tag to Ask MeFi posts where you tried out the advice and it worked or you figured out the name of the book you were looking for. Recently, we mods have taken it upon ourselves to scope out old threads that were getting updates and applying the tag wherever we could. It's always nice to know people solved their problems but there was no easy way to highlight a 7 month old thread where someone figured out the perfect solution. So we added a sidebar on the "answered" tab of Ask MeFi, ordered by how recently the resolved tag was added to them. There's also a feed if you really like closure and want to see new ones added automatically. We hope people continue to use the tag to mark off their questions when they're done and have posted updates late in the thread. The other new feature is a feed for popular posts (RSS) and popular comments (RSS) across all MeFi sites. Before today, you would have to glance at the page to keep up, but now you can add the feeds to your RSS reader of choice (it works great in Google Reader) and you'll see 2-3 new posts or comments in each feed per day. I've been following both feeds for about a week and they're great -- the posts feed is mostly Ask MeFi and it's definitely the best of the best, the comments feed is half jokey quips and half super useful comments from mefi or ask mefi where someone explains the hell out of something.

Podcast feeds from music playlists seem not to be working.. at least it isn't on this one. Comes up okay in the browser, but when pasting it into iTunes it looks like iTunes isn't seeing anything to work with and it never loads up a list. Unless it's just my comp acting up. Possible.

RSS Feed Issues

RSS gone bad? Metafilter Jobs, Ask Metafilter, and Metatalk are showing front page Metafilter posts instead of their respective posts. I'm using Google Reader, if that matters. I tried adding the feeds using Sage to see what was up, and it finds feeds but won't find any actual posts.

I subscribe to a handful of askmefi tags via RSS in Google Reader, one of which is delicious (for when people don't use the del.icio.us tag). Any idea why this post hasn't shown up in GR at all, or am I asking in the wrong place?

NewTabsIWannaPonyFilter: For the various stuff that has now been tabbed-up on AskMeFi, MeFi, and MeTa, it would be wonderful for those of us who primarily browse by RSS feed if we had the option of subscribing to individual RSS feeds for the tabs in question. Hell of a lot more work, I imagine, but I'm just talking in an ideal world.

Repeated posts in RSS

I've been seeing something strange on metafilter, for quite some time now. Posts from certain people appear over and over again in my RSS feed (about once an hour). I would think this was a flaw in my RSS reader (which is intraVnews, btw), but it is always the posts of the same small set of users. It seems to not be an effect on all posts, or on a random selection of posts, but on all posts from a very few posters (whose names I'll withhold as not to sound accusatory).

So, is this a spamming effort being effected by some users? For instance, if one were to periodically edit ones own posts, could one achieve the effect of getting into the RSS feed over and over? Or perhaps there's some other trick. I've corresponded with jessamyn on this, and probably been a pain (sorry). She recommended I contact mathowie (who I imagine reads this) and metatalk.

Tag feeds in Ask MeFi don't work in NetNewsWire

Tag feeds (like this one) in Ask MeFi don't work in NetNewsWire though they work in Safari. Can anyone duplicate this or offer me a solution?

New feature: RSS feeds for tags on both mefi and ask mefi (example). Tag pages have links to feeds, or just add /rss to the URL to get the feed.

Some problems with Atom feed

Atom feed. I've been trying to cobble some code together that'll do interesting things with the atom feed here but most times it comes up as mangled (Firefox says the same too). Any one else having problems? Any chance of it being fixed?

Can Posts Have Titles?

A while back there was a discussion about the non-informative RSS/RDF/XML feed titles, due to the fact that metafilter/metatalk threads don't have 'titles' as such. Could we perhaps have a an extra field in the 'post an FPP' form marked 'Post title' or something that was less than some arbitrary limit of characters long and could be used for things like the feeds, and more importantly (and the reason I'm requesting this) for page titles.
I tend to open all the links I want to read in one go. When I click on the "(n new)" link I don't go to the top of the story, and so when I get to the page after reading other FPPs, I don't know what this story's about anymore, and can't glance at the document title for a hint of the general subject as with many sites.

So, I'm digging mefi's RSS feed, and it finally inspired me to find out what RSS is really about. The whole idea seems so strange to me, though -- can I really just grab the feed and put it on another website? My problem is that I've seen more examples of RSS feeds being offered than examples of RSS being used. I tried to check out Ben Brown's thing, but it looks broken. None of the other mentions of RSS here on MetaTalk helped answer my question.

There seems to be something wrong with the MetaFilter XML feed. I only get "posted by 'whoever »', time and date, and # of comments". Also the XML page says there is an error.

Hi to ev'ryone.. just joine metafilter..

now to the point.. I was wondering if Metafilter outs a xml/rdf/whatever of recent conversation on the frontpage. I noticed that on matt's haughey.com, he has new posts listed on the side.. and I would like to do that on a few sites of mine. any ideas?

New feeds of MetaFilter are available.

There's a handy deepleap plugin

and a pure xml feed of the 24 hours of headlines (currently cut down to ~50 characters in length but I feed the entire post).

I'll whip up a RSS/RDF channel soon and put it at my.netscape, my.userland, or meerkat.

Is there an RSS file for metafilter?
