Super Secret Mini Mefi Meetup

Appalachian Trail hiker, Zak (aka wearyaswater) took me up on my mefi offer. She made it to Virginia!! Yay, that is a benchmark for thru-hikers. She landed in Damascus, Virginia (a major trail town) in the middle of the week so I did not post a flash meetup because (1) remote location (2) middle of the week. So we had maybe the tiniest mefi meetup ever (= 2 members.) BUT we made a sign (link to her blog post... scroll down for the photos.)

I am a romantic where this trail is concerned. I am not going to tell you that wearyaswater is not having a struggle. She is and is doing very well! What I want to say to you is that the struggle is an inextricable part of it and the struggle for each is as different as we are as individuals. This has been true from the very beginning. Even as I consider and witness the changes in technology and gear there are aspects of the trail that do not change and thwart many advancements.

Even though my first mefi meetup was just the two of us I was SO EXCITED! I didn't think I would ever have a chance to meet a Mefite IRL. If Zak comes back for a reunion here I will propose a meetup even though everyone will have to declare a roadtrip (but it's worth it!!)

pertinent blog entry (scroll down for mefi art)

A short update to an old Star Trek: Nemesis AskMe

In regard to the following two-year-old AskMe...

Is there any connection between the Nemesis movie script described in the movie Trekkies and the last ST:TNG movie, Star Trek: Nemesis?
...So, Tooty McTootsalot plopped down $1 to put an e-mail in Gabriel's inbox on Facebook.

Here's the conversation:

McTootsalot: "Hi Gabriel,

Sorry to bother you, but I was hoping you could help me answer a burning question I've had. I haven't found anything online that answers this, so I thought I'd ask the source, you.

In Trekkies, you show off some amazing graphics you created for your local club's submission for a script for a Star Trek movie. You showed a Romulan armada, a space station, and a logo for "Star Station: Nemesis".

Five years later, a movie comes out called Star Trek: Nemesis, and is the only Star Trek film to feature Romulans as the main enemy.

Is there any connection? It seems like a big coincidence, but then again, I have no idea if the stories are similar."

Gabriel: "That question was on my mind for years and I did finally get to meet John Logan, the screen writer, and he did confirm to me that yeah, he saw Trekkies and thought Nemesis would make a cracking title for a Trek film. I agreed. Too bad it was kind of a shitty movie. Other than sharing the Romulans, the stories were not similar at all though."

----

That’s all.

Relationship Hacks 2012? (i.e. Okay to make a sequel?)

The question located at http://ask.metafilter.com/137148/What-clever-relationship-hacks-have-you-come-up-with is one of the most favorited posts of all time, created in 2009. I've found some of the advice in there immensely useful in my own relationships and have referred back to it often.
Since then the community has grown and diversified, and I was thinking about making a post on the green looking for new hacks, but I thought I'd ask here first.

What is the community's stance overall on open-ended posts that were answered a while back getting new posts about them?

Interesting or redundant?

Different since its now 4 years old?

AskMe comes through yet again!

Thanks AskMe! Over a year ago I asked for some help with some technology to help my students use their cameras. The advice I received in the thread led me to purchase some gear (Manfrotto Variable Friction Arm and Super Clamp) that has worked well - so well, in fact, that it caught the notice of a local news writer who put together this article describing the system.

So thanks, AskMe! Not only did you help out my students but you also got some positive press for our school!

(MeFi was described only as an "internet forum", I name-dropped but it must not have made the final edit.)

You only have to realise the truth. There is no pan.

Following up my questions about a vanishing pan and a very odd modelling contract... Hi folks, thought I'd just follow up two of my questions.

Firstly Dude, Where's My Pan?
I've now moved out. It did not turn up when I cleaned out all of my spaces, the pan is genuinely gone. :(

And secondly How on Earth is this legal?
A strange twist to the tale: after being specifically asked to scrutinise the traveller's checks, the bank verified them as legitimate. The company apparently intend to rent a studio for half a day in the town centre to do the shoot, but have been a bit flaky about sorting it out. My housemate will probably go, but only accompanied by a friend, and only if they give her reasonable notice.

AskMe changed my life

Two years ago today, I posted an AskMetafilter that changed my life. I've done a few more weddings since I last updated that post, but the bigger news is that my wife quit her office job last September, and is now performing weddings as her full-time job. She has a website and an awesome office/wedding space and cards and promotional mint tins and all that, and it all started right here.

I had no way of knowing what a huge, life-changing chain of events that one post would set into motion; thanks to all for their support and assistance.

Doctor, eventually.

Thanks, Metafilter. For the past day or so, Google has been sending out emails about its change in privacy policies to every Gmail address. This means, of course, that I've gotten one for each throwaway email I've created for anonymous AskMe questions over the years (because those throwaway addresses forward to my real one).

It's given me occasion to go back through those anonymous questions, and the answers I was given. Now, I'm not going to out myself for all of them (they're anonymous for a reason!), but one in particular comes as a very timely reminder.

In March of 2010 I asked this question: "I'm potentially interested in becoming a primary care (family) physician.... Can you help me find resources I can use to decide if this is something I really want to pursue, or just a fantasy?" Y'all responded with lots of food for thought, many aspects of the profession that I hadn't considered, and advice on how to go about discerning my path that over the past two years has been extremely helpful.

On Monday, I'm starting post-bacc classes, and in about two years, I'll be applying to med school (or, maybe not, if organic chemistry kicks my butt). In a certain way, this new start stems directly from the answers I got in that post, and the thoughts and actions they inspired.

So, thanks again, MeFi. Someday within the next decade and change, I'll probably be able to say "I am a doctor, but I am not your doctor," and mean it. I appreciate it.

Followup tab pony?

Could we maybe have a "followup" tab in AskMe? This may be coding hell, in which case never mind, but:
In my recent question, we had a Very Low Frequency conversation where the answerers, bless them, came back and answered my followup information. But the answerers had to bother to come back and see that I'd provided more info.
Is there a way to automate this? In other words, have a tab that lists questions that I've recently answered, that the original asker has come back with more information?
Any number of times, I've thought to myself, I wonder what happened on that one question, if there was any more (required) infomation provided, or if it was resolved. Having this automated would be a cool feature.

Anonymous followups to anonymous questions

Would you ride this anonymous AskMe pony? Hey everyone!

I was curious what the mods' and the community's thoughts would be on allowing anonymous AskMe questioners to post anonymously in their question thread?

Anonymous posts often concern rather sensitive matters and sometimes call for some clarifying information from the OP. I've recently seen a couple askers out themselves in anonymous threads to post additional info that answerers were asking for, defeating the whole purpose of posting anonymously. (Normally, I would post examples, but in this case I'll refrain in the interests of not further spreading what may or may not have been an accidental breach of anonymity.) The mods, of course, are able to post followups which they are emailed into the threads, but that sounds like kind of a pain in the ass for them (maybe not; I don't know) and is rather slower for the asker and the answerers than the ability to post straight into the thread.

I can see how the incentive of only being able to post followups only publicly would be a check against the rising number of anonymous questions. Could we correct for this and retain the utility of anonymous followups by limiting the number allowed per question? Would that also correct for the other potential blowback, the possibility of flamewars w/ one user in anonymous stealth mode when a question goes sour?

What do you think? Is this a pony we should ride round the pasture, or does she buck and bite in ways I ain't thought of?

Chrontendo directory

I worked for a couple of days on a post on Chrontendo, the project of a guy to play every Famicom and NES game, and in chronological order to boot. (It reminds me a bit of Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged, but no matter.) When I finished it and tried to post it I found out that it had already been posted. (In fact, I myself had commented on it, which was odd.) However, the work I had done in constructing the post, which links to every video's description page and notes which ones contain particularly interesting games, shouldn't go to waste I think. The original thread is long closed, so I'm going to paste my links in the More Inside of this post for people to peruse and enjoy. Crontendo highlights:

Previously On Metafilter... *cut to montage*

Is there an appropriate way to note follow-up on a closed MeFi post? I noticed in today's NYT that there have been several arrests made of members of the Bell, CA city council. There was a post this summer (For Whom The Bell Tolls...) about the outrageous salaries some city officials were making in this small incorporated area of LA.

Of note, the arresting district attorney clarifying that ''Being paid excessive salaries is not a crime, illegally obtaining those salaries is a crime.''

Can we add a "follow up" link or such? Does anyone else care? I'm still new and not sure what the policy on this sort of thing is.
