Now we can see (most of) Kabul: City Number One. This post about Adam Curtis' blog on the BBC website was hampered by the fact that a lot of the video content was not accessible outside of the UK. But, as Curtis said on his blog, "the BBC is now allowing me to show most of the video material on this website internationally. Some will still not be viewable for rights reasons (and I'm afraid the It Felt Like a Kiss film is one of them) but the majority should be available by the end of this week."

This NPR story from the 15th about radiation overdoses at three hospitals from CT scans reminded me of this post on the blue awhile back, which is now closed. I still think of this from time to time, so I thought some of you might be interested. Specifically:

"It could be due to human error," he says. "Or it could be due to problems in the design of the CT scanners, or it could be a combination of both."

MeFi Scoop! Two years ago, oneirodynia made this FPP about the Smothers Brothers. Tonight on Fresh Air, Terry Gross interviewed David Bianculli whose new book about the Brothers' career, Dangerously Funny, comes out tomorrow. Bianculli is NPR's TV critic. The NPR link also features an excerpt (the Introduction) from his book. The second link of oneirodynia’s post points to a video that has been removed. Ditto the link to “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy,” but another video can be found here, and there is a link to a working video for Keith Moon’s exploding drum kit down in the comments. The other links are all still good. I enjoyed this FPP tonight as much as I did two years ago. Called out for being fabulous and fun.

Veteran LA Times sportswriter Mike Penner dead in suspected suicide, a sad folo-up to this 2007 post about his bombshell column announcing his transsexuality and his decision to take a leave of absence and return to the newsroom as Christine Daniels. It got more complicated later on. He took another leave and returned a year ago as Mike Penner again.

Making-of video posted for "I Gotta Feeling" lipdub

Remember the I Gotta Feeling lipdub done by students at the Université du Québec à Montréal? They've posted a making-of video. You get to see the blocking and other prep, much of the first take, and also a third-party view following the film crew during the final shoot -- and then the crowd of participants as they funnel into the studio to meet the camera for the final shot. You get a good look at the (consumer grade?) steadicam used. Almost as much fun as the original.

Folo-up: In 2005 I posted the trailer for a documentary about the legendary SoCal band The Beat Farmers. Due to licensing issues *cough* Letterman clip *cough* the DVD has never been released, despite pleading from fans...until now. Director Jamie Dawson just put the whole thing on YouTube in 9 parts (about 8 mins. each) plus coda. YT Playlist here.

Remember this note trying to identify a plant? Baby has grown up to be a Symphyotrichum puniceum or purple-stemmed aster. It doesn't have flowers yet, but the growth pattern of the mature plant screams "aster".

Wired just posted this article, which is their coverage of the Mystery on Fifth Ave apartment remodel (posted here). They included pictures of a few more of the puzzles, including this cipher. Some of us were interested in the cipher on the radiator, and pretty much figured it out except for a few inconsistencies. The author of the NYTimes piece let me know that there was a mistake in one of the radiator ciphers, but she didn't remember which one or what the mistake was. This one is more difficult, and I thought some of you might like to take a crack at it. I guessed that it's a Vigenère cipher, and this was verified in an email from the designer to me, although he didn't give me the keyword. K1000 resurrection

Old AskMe post resolved. In 2004, I asked about getting a jammed Pentax K1000 fixed. -> A couple few days ago, I found the camera again. Mysteriously, it had repaired itself. I played with it for a bit, and then it jammed again. I Googled for variations on 'Pentax K1000 shutter release jammed' and came up with plentiful reports of the problem. i also came up with a couple hints that it was an easy thing to fix. After locating a page full of old Pentax service manuals (obv, you want the K1000 one if you are playing along at home), I removed the bottom plate (a simple three-screw procedure), jiggery poked the windy geary bits and hey presto, Bob's my uncle. I loaded it up and started shooting. (Now of course, 12 frames into the roll, it's jammed again, and I noted some light-seal material around the edges of the baseplate. So I'll be performing the same surgery shortly... in the dark.) Anyway, just wanted to complete the thread. The fix is so incredibly simple it seemed silly not to point it out.

Staff Benda Bilili have an album out! I'm sure you remember them from when flapjax at midnite made your day with this post. They were the subject of a cover story in Le Monde 2 (Le Monde's weekend supplement). It had some really cool photographs, but nothing is online. Apparently, they're booked to play summer festivals in Europe, if they're able to leave the country. Both links in French, sorry. Also, the FAQ isn't so clear on commercial links, I hope this is ok.

Newbie MeFi-etiquette: On AskMe, it is considered acceptable to ask for more information/detail about a particular answer on the original question's page? There have been several posts on AskMe lately where I would like to know more about a particular interesting/helpful answer to the original question. What is the MeFi-socially acceptable way to getting this information? Is it to post my question on the OP page (referencing the particular user/responder and asking for more info) or, is it to MeFi-mail the user whose answer intrigues me? For example, on this AskMe, I'd like to know more from Pater Aletheias about his great tip. On the one hand, since one goal of AskMe is to get full answers to questions, it seems like the community would benefit from having requests for more detail made in the open. On the other hand, I can see where this might clutter up the page if things turn into a Q&A format to users who are offering answers. What's the best practice?

BUSTED! A follow up! My father found out what the mysterious substance was, but I didn't tell him... One of his co-workers told him! This is a nightmare come true! Well, not really, but I can't believe this guy blurted it out. I took everyone's advice in my post. I denied...denied...and denied knowing anything about traces of this orange powder, known as Adderall, that was found on his coffee table and antique iron. My dad had a co-worker come over yesterday to move an old broken screen TV from the second floor to outside by the trash. He showed a little to his co-worker. For some reason, my father refused to completely clean up the substance, until he found out what it was. My dad's co-worker looked at the powder and said, "Oh I know exactly what this is, it is Adderall!" Then my dad said "What is Adderall?" This is funny, because I took Adderall for 5 years. The co-worker said, "It is used to treat ADHD, it is a stimulant that stronger than caffiene but weaker than crack. Some people like to crush and snort it to get high!" I had to rat out my friend, because I didn't want him to think it was me! True to his nature, he is shitting bricks about this. I can't really blame him though. People asked me why I didn't clean it up...I thought it was removed completely, it was pretty dark in the living room so I didn't see the orange streaks on the table, and I was completely unaware that the iron was used to crush it at that time. I feel pretty secure in my job right now, I don't think I will be kicked to the curb anytime soon. I am now looking for somewhere else to live. I just hope I can find some roommates too, so I can afford this.

Bug report (?) + Follow-up

Is archiving a thread supposed to put the kibosh on Recent Comments? Also, a follow-up. After I submitted my Cartoon Network mega-post, folks in the comments turned up many, many more types of clips and shorts that I had overlooked. So for completeness (completeness's?) sake I resolved to find the rest of these and add them to the post before it closed. So I collected a few over time, and got most of the rest in the hour or so before the thread was archived (yay, deadlines). I figured that it was worth posting even after so long because the comment would get circulated to everyone who had commented in or favorited the post. OR SO I THOUGHT. For some reason the new comment wasn't showing up in my Recent Comments page. I'm guessing it's due to either the archival process or the site's ongoing server issues, but it would be nice to know exactly what the nature of the problem is, for future reference. I do know that delayed follow-up comments like homunculus' continue to show up, so perhaps this is a fresh problem. (Also, as long as I'm here, here's my followup comment listing the 25 new clips that I found.)

Followup to my Keane question. The money wasn't as exciting as I thought, but what a painful experience! So you'll remember that I was contacted by this mysterious Keane company who said they were handling a case involving a significant amount of "unclaimed" money with my name attached to it. The very long story, very very short, comes down to this: Keane is a "legitimate" company. They were contacted by a holder of one of my accounts who had gotten a Return To Sender notice. This was my money. The account, however, was one that I knew about, and the reason that my address was incorrect were unclear. Seems like an accounting/paperwork error. Unfortunately, I didn't know that this was the account in question until after I signed something (following the advice of askmefi, including a couple of Keane employees). When I called the account holders to find out what was going on, they fixed my address over the phone, told me that this was the end of it, and they'd contact Keane to close the case. It wasn't that easy. It took me several months to clear this issue up; I was pretty convinced that I was going to get sued or sent to collections; even my lawyer friend said that I signed a pretty airtight contract. And Keane's case rep was really pushy and unwilling to negotiate, despite this obviously being a mistake. But the end of the story is a positive one. Phone calls were made, and they finally closed the case, releasing me from my burden. Lesson learned: If you are contacted by a company like this, don't ignore it, but immediately review all of your records, even the unlikely ones, to see if you can figure out what's going on before you sign anything.
