Fantasy Football 2009

It's fantasy football time again! Once again, I've got the Metafilter fantasy football league running on Yahoo! Fantasy. This year, I'm capping it at 12 teams. Serious players only, please. We had a lot of people last season who joined and then didn't actively manage their squads, which was detrimental to the overall quality of play. What MetaFilter themed party games are you going to play at YOUR 10th Anniversary MeetUp? Philadelphia is having a house/garden party potluck, and it occurs to me that a number of silly party games can be tweaked to appeal to a crowd composed nearly entirely of MeFites. - Pin the beans on the plate: You, ya know, pin the beans... on the plate. And then you think about it. HARD. - Historical Usernames: Everyone comes up with the best, most ridiculous username for historical figures. - Iconic AskMe: Everyone submits questions, and responds with typical AskMe answers independent of their appropriateness. (How can I fix my MacBook Air? ----> DTMFA!!! (or) Is it safe to eat? ---> LAWYER UP!!) But there have to be a million options! So: hope us play great MetaFilter games!

MeFi VASSAL group/directory? With all of the posts about gaming lately, I'm wondering if we wouldn't benefit from some sort of list of MeFis who use VASSAL, along with some kind of crude matchmaking functionality. VASSAL is an open-source gaming engine that lets you play classic board games, online, either in real-time or by email. Seems like we oughtta be able to get some killer MeFi Diplomacy or Advanced Civ games going ... anybody wanna play? (Here's the list of games currently available.)

AD&D playing mefites--- How about a campaign? I haven't played D&D in over a decade, but I think an online game with mefites might be entertaining as hell. I have no idea what the current state of the technology is, though so I haven't a clue of how it would work. I also don't want to GM, but I'm sure there are people who have campaigns ready to go. Ideally I'd like to do it online with a transcript so we can share with the class afterwards. Anybody else interested in this?

Is there a Metafilter Eve corporation? Should there be one? I only played the demo once and got bored with it, but I'd be interested in taking another shot if some mefites wanted to start a corporation. We can't let Something Awful have all the fun, can we?

I've gone ahead and created a MeFi wiki page for our little Diplomacy-playing subcommunity (spawned in this MeTa thread). It is largely content-free at this point, but it lists the current games and the people who have expressed interest in playing. Please add to it - I specifically think some simple instructions about signing up for DP Judge games would be useful to have there. Happy stabbing!

I sense MeFi has a few hardcore Diplomacy players. Any interest in starting a game? Perusing this hijacked thread about ~~Risk~~ Diplomacy, I see we have a number of Diplomacy advocates. If we can gather seven members together for a play-by-email or PHP game, then the fun cannot be halted. Anyone interested in playing, or even learning? I'll set something up if there is enough interest.

Warhammer Online: it calls to me. Wondering if any MeFites are also planning to get in on some Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning action. I will likely join come the first of the month, when I can grab a spiffy new video card that will run it. Anyone else looking to start/join a MeFi guild? (I'm leaning towards Destruction but I'm flexible.)

Can we get a policy to discourage the pimping of "stealth pay" games here on Metafilter? We have recently seen this and this on the front page. Both of these sites seem to offer free online gaming fun, only to ask for money after leading you on to sign up and / or start playing. I think this is a really sleazy way of promoting a business, and it is something we shouldn't be facillitating here. I wonder if the posters didn't actually play through long enough to find that they were only seeing a demo, and everything else was behind a pay wall? Or even worse, that they knew the site was wanting our money, but presented it on the blue as a free game anyways? I know not everything on the Internet is free. Just don't pretend something is free that isn't. And if that's your marketing model, the people of Metafilter should say "blow me" to those sites.

Team Fortress 2 Metafilter Server So you're on the least aggravating public server, trying to avoid the porn sprays, the sailor talk (and I'm not talking nautical), and ear-cleaving yells that someone has indeed, owned you; not only because you are newer to the game than he, but because your sexual orientation is something he fears and denigrates. You might think to yourself. Well, a few things. 1) I wonder if there is a nice cozy server that's all passworded up the wazoo with 128 bit encryption to keep me safe from the unwashed masses? 2) Wouldn't it be nice to make a snide comment on the server about Edgar Rice Burroughs only to be rebuked in a style best described as Irate Lovecraftian. 3) Where have all the friendly people gone? Do they no longer play video games? Are they holed up play Settlers of Catan or Risk or some other highly geeky yet ultimately socially unacceptable game? They might even be fans of Diplomacy. Or, Ganesha forbid, Go. 4) Give me a place where I can call home. Where people do silly things for silly reasons, and every so often, they actually have serious games where the TEAM in Team Fortress actually means something. 5) Damn games to heck, I just want to be able to rub cyber shoulders with Stavros the Wonderchicken! That DaShiv guy! Or that fellow who made that short lived but ever amusing HL2 comic, "Concerned". GIVE ME E-CELEBRITY OR GIVE ME DEATH! Well, we have the place for you. herr.doktor and Stavros the Chicken and some others I'm sure I've missed has amassed their internets, weaving together the series of tubes to create a veritable basket of gaming goodness! And seven years later, Super Smash Brothers Brawl has landed. I would love to smash some MeFites. I'm about to run up to pick up my copy, but I spent last night gleefully engaged in zany cartoon violence with a couple friends. I figured (and maybe I figured wrong) based on both the number of people I saw waiting in line last night and the widely varied demographic of said people that maybe some Metafilter folk would be interested. Nintendo's online play implementation isn't exactly intuitive, and requires we exchange some unreasonably long string of digits known as the "friend code". I'll post mine as soon as I get back from the store. Anybody else?

Since I started this AskMe thread about the game of go a couple of weeks ago, I've taught myself the basics, and I've just opened an account on the Dragon Go Server. Are there any other MeFites around that want to join along with me? Now's the time--if you're an absolute beginner then you'll be certain to have at least one other total newbie to play against, and if you know something about go, then you can start schooling me. (My ID over there is Prospero--same as here.)
