A little under three years ago a Mefite named kcds made a bold proposal for a product that now (according to multiple reddit posts) has been incorporated into gmail. Time to get your cut sir.

Google apparently now provides email, calender, and IM services for your own domain. Do you think this would be a useful addition to MetaFilter?

People, I have google spreadsheet invitations. I'm not sure how limited the initial invitation was, but if you're waiting to get in, I'll invite you. You need to have a gmail account, though.

I created a gmail account for anonymous askme followups. The username is anon.metafilter and the password is metafilter. Anymore can post there. Just log in at gmail.google.com and send email from that account TO that account (anon.metafilter@gmail.com).

Since gmail allows tags, you can tag your messages. You can also reply to them (or other users can reply to them) and gmail will automatically keep all the replies together.

Why hasn't someone already done this? Is it a bad idea? (No one will be forced to use it). If it's a bad idea, why is it a bad idea? Of course, it could (perhaps will) get utterly chaotic with people deleting each others posts, etc.

Lets see what happens.

I have a much bigger problem with the people who shit all over this thread than I do with the thread itself, which was rather cute. I still think it would've been a valid AxMe post even if the "win a gmail invite for being cute" portion hadn't been there.

While this AskMe thread regarding gmail accounts for MeFites is still going strong, I thought the wiki would be a good place to keep track of who is offering accounts and who would like to receive an invitation.

Not worth starting a new MeFi thread for, but gmail is up and running. Previous discussion here. Active Blogger users are being asked to join. I did, and have sent and received my first emails. The service is pretty slick, and has a nice interface, as far as I've discovered so far.
