7th Annual MST Club Holiday Video Marathon Social Distancing Edition

It's time again for that weird thing we do, which is program 72 hours of specials, bad Christmas movies, MST3K episodes and other things. It's MST Club's 2020 Holiday Video Marathon! We usually put this in for intermittent yuletide jollies and destress, to help people relax at an often frustrating time of year. This year, with so many people sensibly staying home for the holidays, it promises both to be less and more stressful than usual. Anyone can come by and watch weird stuff with us, members or not! Our show runs from December 23 through to midnight December 25. Details inside! Previous years: 2019 - 2018 - 2017 - 2016 - 2015 - 2014

We have a chat room attached so people can joke along with the show, but it's fine to lurk or have us on in the background! We do this by the seats of our collective pants, but we have a vague sort of theme schedule. We are open to reading the crowd to see what people would like though. Our plans (times are Eastern) are:

DEC 23:
Morning: specials, riffing
Afternoon: Rankin-Bass
Evening-Night: MST3K and other riffing, miscellaneous

DEC 24:
Morning: more specials
Early afternoon: Christmas episodes of old TV shows -- Jack Benny, Burns & Allen
Evening-Night: MST3K and other riffing, our favorite specials

DEC 25:
Morning: Quiet time -- Yule logs, specials
Afternoon: Our standards -- classic riffing
Evening-Night: Winding down, non-holiday fare

Our moderator list this year is TheSnakeOfArgument, valkane, StarkRoads, Satri and TV's Ilana. oneswellfoop might be helping too but has been having computer issues lately.

Some of our items are from the Rifftrax catalog. While we have a terrific hodge-podge of material from them, we try to make sure that everything we have is bought and paid for. Please give them your support!

US Thanksgiving

It's US Thanksgiving and a lot of us aren't celebrating the way we would've liked. But here's a thread for community and chat; I'm thankful you're here, Mefites. What are you up to? What's on your playlist for the day?

To give myself a thing to do today, I'm going to try making something I never made before: deviled eggs. So I'm ready for your best deviled eggs ideas too.

Cookie Swapping in the Time of COVID?

Is it feasible to do a cookie swap this year? What say you, lovely mefites? The MeFi Cookie Swap is a decade-old tradition, accidentally instigated by me, actually brought to fruition by shothotbot, and graciously kept afloat for years by ausdemfenster before she passed the oven mitts to me in 2018.

It is a weird fuckin' year, so I wanted to check in to see where y'all fall on the 2020 Cookie Swap Opinion Scale:

1 - I don't think it's wise to swap cookies with strangers in the midst of a global pandemic and I think the community should postpone until next year.

5 - I'm not going to participate this year, but I'm fine if other choose to do so.

10 - I desperately need to bake/receive random internet cookies to help me push through this hell-hole of a year.

I have no preference and will defer to the hive mind, so please do share your open & honest feedback!

MeFi Holiday Card Exchange

The MeFi Holiday Card Exchange sign up is live!

It will be open from today until Thursday, 11/19, and lists will go out by Monday, 11/23. (likely in batches) I did add a Europe only option.

I will do a pull around 11/13 or so, and get an international list out to people who have signed up at that point.

-Number of card options are in sets of ten - 10, up to 20, up to 30. If you are open to more than 10, but not 20, you can add that to the notes. Sometimes the sorting works out that I have some odd numbers.
-Also, if you want to send anywhere, but not too many international, you can put that in the special notes section as well. Most of the participants have been in the US in previous years.
-Any type of card is fine - handmade, storebought, postcards, etc.
-We don't have a specific timeline on when you need to have your cards sent out by, just whenever you can.
-Some people put specific requests in the notes i.e., specific holiday they celebrate or don't celebrate, requests for non-religious cards if possible, etc.

MeFi Holiday Card Exchange Planning

Let's talk holiday card exchange planning!

I'd love to do the card exchange again this year. A couple of questions on timing and specifics - With the mail potentially being slower, moving up the timeline of signups and when I get information out to everyone is probably a good idea. I normally try to get lists out to people the weekend of Thanksgiving, but this year, what if we do signup from 11/3-11/19, and my goal is to get lists out by Monday 11/23?

Last year, there was a request for a Europe only group, if there was enough interest. Is there interest in that this year? Previously, we've done US only and Anywhere.

Other notes about the exchange -
-Any type of card is fine - handmade, storebought, postcards, etc
-We don't have a specific timeline on when you need to have your cards sent out by, just whenever you can.
-Some people put specific requests in the notes i.e., specific holiday they celebrate or don't celebrate, requests for non-religious cards if possible, etc.
-In the past, I've given the option for numbers of cards as 10, up to 20, and up to 30.

Winter Wishes: MetaFilter Cares! 11th Annual Gift and Donation Drive!

It's that wonderful time of the year when MeFi gathers its resources and warm wishes to help those who need them. For those who want to go directly to the wish lists, here's the one on Amazon and here's the one on Target. Here's how the drive works, in brief:
1. Kids write letters expressing holiday gift wishes, which are distributed by New York Cares.
2. I make wish lists from those letters and you all generously buy the gifts, which are sent to me.
3. I wrap and deliver them.
4. We also collect some other important things, which I deliver sometimes after January 1.

This year, our Winter Wishes recipients are kids aged 3 to 11 in a public school program in Manhattan. Their wishes are mainly here on Amazon, with a few here on Target. Many people have concerns about working conditions and other issues at Amazon, so I'm trying to move away from hosting our drive entirely there. In the future, I hope to be able to do the list fully elsewhere if news doesn't improve. I'd like to get the kiddie gifts purchased in the next week.

Since the 2016 election, we've also, in the name of dignity, been collecting menstrual supplies for a shelter and support program for homeless LGBTQ youth. They have been gladly received! All of those items are on the Target registry, and I'll be keeping that open til after the new year.

Both lists have gift cards listed. Those are used to buy out of stock or unpurchased items. Some of the remainder is given to the recipient organizations. For the last couple of years, we have also sent gift cards to a program for survivors of domestic abuse. The program distributes them directly to those women so they may -- again, with dignity -- choose their own items.

Finally, this year, New York Cares has decided to focus only on children. We've had a really nice time getting gifts for seniors in the past. I don't have specific plans for seniors right now, but if donations are strong enough, I'd love to talk about what we can do.

I am available by MeMail for any questions, and my contact info is in my profile. You're welcome to text me or to mail things directly to my address.

And finally, the link no Winter Wishes post would be complete without, the AskMe by felix grundy that serendipitously started this whole thing.

Winter Wishes 2019, Coming Soon!

Hello and happy winter! I just received our packet of letters for the annual gift drive (the 11th!) and I will have the wish list posted sometime before the end of the day on Monday, the 25th. If you would like to receive an email right before I do that, you can sign up here.

A couple of bits of business: 1.
For the past few years, we've been giving gifts to kids/teens and to seniors via the Winter Wishes program and also collecting menstrual supplies and Amazon gift cards for a shelter for LGBTQ youth. This allows me to request slightly fewer letters to make certain we can fulfill all the gift requests (one year, it was really close) while allowing people to keep being generous if they're able.

However, this year, NY Cares is focusing only on children for the Winter Wishes drive. I would love some thoughts on where you'd like to direct donations above the kids' gift requests. Only to the LGBTQ youth program? To a program for seniors instead? To both?

2.
I feel a little bit weird showing up on MeFi only once a year for the gift drive! I love organizing it, but I am completely open to handing things over to someone who is more active here these days. I would not be at all offended if you'd like a closer community member to take over, so please do let me know your thoughts.

Merry, merry!

The Great Mefi Cookie Swap 2019

Lovely mefities, Cookie Swapping Season is nigh! Sign up by December 1 to get in on all of this deliciousness. Fun Fact: 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the Mefi Cookie Swap! This tasty tradition began with shothotbot and was carried on by ausdemfenster over the years.

Last year, I took on the task of keeping the cookie swap going, and it was a fantastic experience!
Thank you to all who offered helpful feedback!

To sign up, please complete the Google Form here by December 1.

Bakers will be organized in groups of 4-ish, based on a very complex algorithm factoring into account each person's dietary restrictions, geography, and favorite GBBO contestant (#teamjames4life).

I will do my level best to get groups organized and notifications sent out by December 3.

By December 13, you should send 6 cookies to each of the bakers in your assigned groups. That’s 18 cookies minimum, but feel free to bake extra for friends, household members, IRL strangers, or whoever looks like they could use a cookie.

If you have questions, feel free to memail me or email themeficookieswap@gmail.com

Glad tidings and tasty treats to all,

Thrilled and honored to be the first to post a THANK YOU to -- I don't know who specifically, but the kind and generous soul who honored my request to be sent "anything made of dark chocolate that comes from their corner of the universe." I am now the very, very happy recipient of 6 glorious bars of superior dark chocolate from Toronto. I shall savor every bite. Fun side note -- I received an email yesterday from "Secretariat" (one of the awesome folks that stepped up to help make Quonsmas happen this year) -- to say that my secret quonsar pal had gotten notification that my gift couldn't be delivered because I wasn't home to sign for it. I received this email while out shopping for my secret quonsar gift!!

Thank you to EVERYONE who has made Quonsmas happen this year. I hope everyone participating enjoys their secret gift as much as I will enjoy mine. Secret Quonsmas 2019 proves once again that MetaFilter is a lovely, wonderful community of amazing people.

End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about fireworks. Here in N. America we've recently celebrated Canada Day (July 1) and Independence Day (July 4). Both of these holidays are traditionally celebrated with the setting off of fireworks. Are there any other holidays from around the world where you celebrate with fireworks? I'd love to learn more about that. Do you hate or fear fireworks? Do you set them off yourself? Do you attend a local display put on by your town or city? Do you buy them illegally? Are there any specific types you prefer? Blackcats? UFOs? Roman candles? Feel free to share any photographs/videos of firework displays you've attended recently. As always be kind to yourself and others. And remember to practice proper fire safety protocols.

The TENTH Annual Winter Wishes Gift Drive! MeFi Cares!

It's here! (Finally!) This year's drive marks a decade of MetaFilter's donations to New York Cares' Winter Wishes program. More details are inside, but for those in a hurry, here's the link right to the wish list. Please forgive the delay, especially after I emailed the announcement and then disappeared into the ether. Even my mail carrier has asked what's going on with this drive. I'm more or less fine and very excited for this best part of the holiday season!

This year's letters are from:
- kids aged 6-8 in a public school program in Brooklyn, some of whom have special physical needs.
- seniors at a church-based program for low-income seniors in the Bronx.

Here's the Amazon wish list containing their gift wishes, as well as gift cards in various denominations. Those are used to fill in for out of stock items, combined for larger gifts, and donated directly to the organizations.

Last year, we also collected menstrual supplies and gave them to this shelter for homeless LGBTQIA youth. You donated 22 menstrual cups, 3 very large boxes of pads, and 2 very large boxes of tampons. The shelter also received a significant amount in Amazon gift cards. For this year's drive, we can again collect supplies and cards for this shelter, or we can choose another recipient. I'm happy to add to the Amazon list according to MeFi's wishes. Please comment with your thoughts!

Because of my delay, it's important that I get the kids' gifts in as soon as possible, so please prioritize those gifts and use Prime shipping whenever possible. There's an option on the list for email gift cards; if you don't have Prime, I'll order a gift for you using my Prime account. The seniors are fine with the later schedule. I'm planning to deliver to the youth shelter (or wherever else you folks choose) between Christmas and New Year's.

I'll keep an eye on this throughout the day, as there's basically always something awry with the Amazon list, from my error or Amazon's. I'm actually still transferring seniors' items from the first list I'd made, which refuses to go public, to the list we're now using. If you need my address or phone number, I've added it to my profile.

AND, no year would be complete without a link to MeFi's first Winter Wishes collection, which happened organically via an AskMe post from felix grundy.

Happy holidays!

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, I'm feeling Christmassy now that (American) Thanksgiving is in the books, and Hannukah is like ALMOST UPON US (so early this year!), so it's a holiday open thread! The topic is wide open and we'd love to hear everything that's up with you, except for politics! And if you have ideas for future talktails, hit me up!

Calling all Cards!

Having just mailed my cards for Project G.I.V.E. M.E. (that is, Great Internet Valentine Exchange, Metafilter Edition), and having had at least as much fun as I did with the winter holiday cards, I'm wondering if there's enough momentum and interest for another project. But what international observation is coming up? Easter, maybe? The first day of Spring? May Day?

Or should we try something a little more complex, like participants’ birthdays? (Or birth months, if they're not comfortable sending the date over the intertubes.) Either each person could have a single birthday buddy, or it could go within small groups like Christmas and Valentine's did.

Thoughts, ideas, Maurice Chevalier imitations?

GIVE UP YOUR FOOD

It is the time for feasting, which means it is the time for recipes! We have no other outlet for our dark perversions, so let's do it here. Oh, such recipes we should all share... here's mine for Maple Bacon Dirt Rockets! DARK FOUNT OF POWER:

1 pound of skinny little carrots, with their cute little green tops on.
1 pound of parsnips, you have no choice, it’s a pound of parsnips.
1/3 of a cup of Grade B Maple Syrup, Grade A Robust and Dark if you cannot find Grade B. Mostly because they are lying and are actually grade B. This is good. We need this.
4 sprigs of thyme where you actually bother to strip off the leaves
4 sprigs of thyme you just chuck on top entire.

POWER MISAPPLIED:

1) Cut the green tops off the carrots, and promise to yourself to look up a recipe for carrot tops not involving the prop comedian. Throw away the carrot greens. Peel the carrots.

2) Most of the parsnips are carrot shaped, except for the really WHOAH ones. Peel and cut the parsnips down to size as needed with a sharp knife.

4) Putting the bacon in the freezer for a half hour puts the bacon to sleep, so it will feel nothing as you dice six thick-cut slices into thin ribbons to toss them in the throwaway pan. Hearty grinds of pepper. Don’t forget the thyme!

5) You have sprayed the throwaway aluminum foil roasting pan with a liberal dosing of a generic PAM cooking spray! And now there are ingredients, and a properly heated oven, and they are all in the same place at the same time. A half hour at 450º degrees? Sure, why not.

6) ROAST! ROAST! ROAST!

7) Remove the disposable foil roasting pan from the searing heat. Ignore what you have done. Transfer those who can be lifted from the pan without effort to a nice dish, pry the stuck, burnt ones off later as an amazing crispy snack when doing dishes.

8) Receive praise, slay the root-vegetable unbelievers!

2017 Winter Wishes Gift Drive: MetaFilter STILL Cares!

Yes, it's here! It's that beautiful time of every year where the MetaFilter community comes together to fulfill wishes for people as part of New York Cares' Winter Wishes program (and sometimes more). This year, we have kiddies, we have teens, we have seniors... and all we need is you. [Skip the details, show me the list!] This year, our recipients are from three different organizations:
- seniors who attend a senior program in Brooklyn
- preschoolers from a Head Start program in Brooklyn (who went SUPER DECORATIVE with their cards! Stay tuned for photos!)
- several teen girls who attend an after-school program in Manhattan

You can participate by visiting the wish list HERE and purchasing something. You can ignore the names and codes under each item; they're there so I can keep track of what's going where. Everything should be wrapped and delivered to our three organizations by December 8, and this is the year I will definitely remember to take more than two photos. Yes, it is.

I'm still working on adding all of the items, but I should be done by this evening. The list contains gift items, a few wrapping supplies, and gift cards that can be used to buy unpurchased items, given directly to the organizations we're working with, or... see below.

This year's senior and teen letters are super succinct and the kiddie cards are elaborate craft projects with Post-Its inside with wish items listed on them. Unfortunately, there aren't really any gift cards to write, but if you're not able to send a gift, you can still participate just by sending good wishes to your fellow MeFites and discussing things in the comments here. Every year, people write to express how great it feels to see this miracle of generosity happen every single year. Join in!

Re: gift cards:

So, 1. this has been a demanding year for giving, and 2. I had a big surgery a week ago today, so I requested fewer wishes than usual -- an equal number of kids and seniors and a handful of teens. But last year's giving exceeded what I could have reasonably imagined, and at the end, even after donating to our recipient organization, I was left with a number of gift cards and had to figure out what to do with them. (We donated them to a program that distributes them directly to women in shelters after leaving abusive situations.) I'm not sure what to expect this year.

In thinking about the last year, the word "dignity" comes to mind for me. Dignity lacking in those in positions of power, dignity wrenched from and regained by those finally able to shed light on decades' worth of abuse and harassment, dignity needed for those who have lost so much in this year's numerous natural disasters. My idea for any excess gift cards funds (and even perhaps adding to the wish list) is to use them in furtherance of dignity.

There are several organizations that collect and distribute menstrual supplies where they are very much needed. Menstruation is expensive, as something needs to be done about the "blood coming out of [her] wherever." Food stamps don't cover supplies, most states charge sales tax on them, and they can be hard to come by for homeless people and where disaster has left every kind of supply hard to find. When I delivered items post-Sandy, I was greeted with extreme gratitude and excitement every time I'd show up with pads or tampons. They were the first things to disappear from donation room shelves.

If it's all right with you, I'd like to donate extra gift card funds to #happyperiod. Of the orgs that distribute menstrual supplies, they are the only one that acknowledges that women are not the only people who menstruate. If there's enthusiasm for this idea, I'll add some supplies to the wish list, too. Please, please let me know your thoughts. I want to be a good caretaker of your generosity.

Finally, here's the link to last year's WW drive, which contains links to all the years that have come before. I'm a little bleh from medication at this moment and I just don't have that much copying and pasting in me.

HAPPY WINTER!

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! Now that Halloween is over, I am ready to GET HYPE for the winter holidays, and with the SUPER-INTENSE SNOWSTORM we had on Friday that made it impossible to drive, but only for an hour, I think the universe is telling me it's time to talk turkey. (And trees and menorahs and festivus poles and kinaras and champagne and red envelopes and logs and orbital mechanics and any other holiday accoutrements that may be common to your culture, family, or religion!) So what is up for the next couple months, what are you looking forward to, what are you making cunning plans to avoid, tell us everything holiday.

Well, not much has happened over the past year, and things have been pretty easy for the mods, so I hesitate to even make a post to celebrate Moderators' Day this year. It seems a bit off to thank the mods for all their hard work, thoughtfulness, excellent communication skills, and infinite patience when they have basically been lounging by the pool at MetaFilter World Headquarters eating bonbons and /hamburgers all year. I'm kidding, of course. It's been a trying year for many people, and MetaFilter would not be the respite and resource that it currently is were it not for the continuing efforts of our world-class moderation team.

Please join me in thanking all of our moderators and technical support - past and present - on this, the tenth anniversary of the original Moderators' Day.
Winter Wishes Gift Drive - Update

I just wanted to offer a final wrap-up of what MeFi's generosity accomplished this year. It's pretty amazing. I'm sorry for starting a new post! The original one's already closed.

First of all, I've set up a mailing list that you can subscribe to if you'd like to be notified when the annual gift drive announcement is posted. Every year, there are some folks who don't see it til it's almost or actually over, so I thought a notification list might be a good idea.

All of MeFi's Winter Wishes gifts have been delivered... and this year, there was such an outpouring of donations and good wishes that you were able to give even more than usual. You gave:

- Gifts to 70 children and seniors as part of New York Cares' Winter Wishes program.

- Extra "fill in" gift cards to the organizations those letters came from.

- A bunch of cards personally written to those who wrote wish letters.

- Dolls sent from Hermione Granger to two very deserving little girls whose families are having an extra hard winter.

- Gift cards to women and children affected by domestic violence. The Amazon credit for the duplicates came later than the original drive, so I made an executive decision about what to do with it. (And there might be more coming. The wish list/dupe situation is kind of a headache.) These gifts allow women choice, dignity, and flexibility, all things that seem like they could be in even shorter supply very soon. I volunteered with this organization when I lived in DC a long time ago, and they make good use of their resources.

- Super warm feelings to a lot of people, including me. Thank you for that.

Here are some photos of the gifts being loaded up for delivery! I always forget to take pics until everything's almost done, and every year, I promise myself I'll do better. Sigh.

Many, many, many thanks to everyone who participated this year in any capacity -- donations, card-writing, and merry thoughts. You made the season brighter for so many people.

Thanksgiving time is upon us in the US and since we all need a hug

HUGS!

And a reminder that many good folks are offering their homes as a place of refuge. The offer still stands open for anyone feeling the need for hugs in Wilmington NC. Just hit my memail.

2016 Winter Wishes Gift Drive!

It's the most... wonderful tiiime... of the year. It might not feel like it, but given how 2016 has shaped up, this might actually be it!

We have a tradition every winter where MetaFilter members come together to bring joy to others for the holidays. Via New York Cares' Winter Wishes program, we fulfill wishes from children's letters -- and for the past two years, from seniors' letters, too.
(Skip the details, show me the list!) This year's recipients range in age from 5 to 95! Last year, the addition of seniors to our traditionally kids-only list went so well that this year, half of our letters are from folks 65 and up. All of the letters come from a community center in Brooklyn that includes a senior center and an after-school program.

You can participate by:
1. Visiting the wish list and buying a gift, a gift card toward a gift, or some wrapping supplies.
2. Writing a response to one of the letters that'll go in a card to your recipient. MeMail me to request a letter! You can actually write out a card and send it (my address is in my profile) or you can MeMail back your words, which I'll write in a card.
3. Having a van or something and driving these gifts from Washington Heights to Brooklyn on December 2 or 3. (Otherwise, I'll hire someone.)

Misc.:
Please pardon the lack of activity on this account; I use a new name on MeFi now for everything other than the gift drive.

My landlord and super have once again very kindly set aside a secure room for us to use for storage. My partner and I will be wrapping the gifts as they arrive, so there's no need to order Amazon's gift wrapping.

You can disregard the names and "BREC" or "BRES" codes on the wish list. They're there to help me organize things as they arrive.

I'm going on a cruise from the 20th til the 27th and will mostly lack internet access, but til and after then, I'll be checking in with the thread and the wish list frequently.

If you'd like to have anything shipped directly to me, I'm adding my home address in my profile. My Google Voice number for texting and my email address are also there, for any questions or glitches.

Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate.

Previous years:

In celebration of mefi connections

I'd like to declare September 28th Reach Out to a New Mefite day. Two years ago today, elephantsvanish messaged me out of the blue about this question I'd posted two years previously, wondering what career path I'd ultimately decided on. Clicking through her profile, I noticed she'd made previous comments about zines and zine culture. As it happened, I'd just finished doing a training program for my new career and writing a zine about that experience. I wrote back and suggested we skype sometime. One Skype conversation led to another, which led to her coming to visit me in Philly, which led to two more visits across three different states. Here we are on a train across Michigan this past summer.

One year ago today I had a lovely memail exchange with nebulawindphone about Andromeda Klein, the book I take my user name from. In messaging back and forth, we came up with some possible scenarios for Andromeda Klein fanfic. I tweeted about wanting to write said fanfic, and the author of the book got back to me and told me to go for it. (I can't uncover the back and forth because going through old tweets is an exercise in futility, but trust me it happened.) I also found out that nebulawindphone and I are part of the same small hobby community, and have friends and acquaintances in common through that network. We've only met once briefly, but there's a high probability that we'll cross paths again through said community.

Two years is a pretty good streak for new friendly exchanges, and I'd like to keep it up. So I'm declaring September 28th Reach Out to a New Mefite Day. Got someone whose comments you've always admired? Have a question for another mefite who shares a particular interest with you? Today's as good a day as any to message someone.

Mefi has brought so many lovely people into my life. May today be a day that you, too, talk to someone great.
