I have an iPhone 6S running iOS 9.3.5 I can't see the comments in Metafilter posts. All other sites seem to display properly, with the exception of one I can think of where an option button appeared on others' phones but not mine. I am logged in. I have tried different Metafilter display preferences. What gives? [more inside]
After a long day of reading the site on mobile while waiting for stuff, the request here to add a "Favorite this post" link to the "Who favorited this post" page (the one that comes up when you click the link with the number of people who favorited the post) made a lot of sense to me. [more inside]
Just a friendly reminder: if you're using one or more iOS devices, have upgraded to iOS 9 and have jumped on the new content blocking functionality bandwagon, remember to add your favorite sites to the whitelist(s) of the blocker(s) of your choice. I added MeFi and other frequently visited faves of mine, seeing that ads served here by The Deck are high quality and unintrusive, and no doubt important for keeping the site going.
This app, MetaReader ("an unofficial client for MetaFilter"), is a paid app and (at least under ios7) DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. It crashes on launch. I recently got a refund from iTunes. I did contact the seller via email and twitter two weeks ago and even sent a full crash log in an email but haven't heard anything back - which is why I asked Apple for (and got) a refund. I decided to make a meta to warn others because I am no longer listed as owning the app - because refund - and so can't leave a review on itunes to warn the unsuspecting. [more inside]
A lot of people have complained about FanFare's professional white background. Well, DRUNK WITH POWER after somehow kludging together a successful CSS theme for /r/MetaFilter with zero experience, I decided to try my hand at giving our new subsite a makeover, too -- the layout is fine, but that glaring white is painful to read in a darkened teevee room. Inspired by the original soothing dark blue color scheme from film/TV review aggregator Metacritic (which discarded it for an unpopular redesign years ago), I put together a complete FanFare theme (screenshot*) that adjusts not just the background and text, but stuff like visited links, link hovering, the pop-up video button and lightbox, posting page notes, live preview area, and the sidebar and Deck ad box. You can install it in Firefox (with Greasemonkey or Stylish), Chrome (with Stylish or Blank Canvas Script Handler), and jailbroken iOS (with Userscript Loader, using this URL) -- it's tested and working properly on all three. Want to beta test out MeFi Radio, a new iOS 7.x app? [more inside]
I was wondering if it would be possible to get the "Remove from Activity" link added to the Recent Activity page of the Mobile site. Is this something that people would like to have, and if so would it be feasible to implement this feature? [more inside]
Would it be permissible for mefi to facilitate users getting ios 7 udid registration ? [more inside]
I want an official Metafilter app for iOS. Is one in the works? If not, would The Powers That Be object to one being made by a community member? And what would the community want in such an app, and how much would they be willing to pay? [more inside]
MeFites on GameCenter for iOS, unite! [more inside]
I just got an iPad (the 3rd gen/newest one, if it matters). In Safari, when I hit the back button from a MeFi post to the main page, I am always taken to the top of the page, instead of where I was last reading. Am I doing something wrong? I don't have this problem on my iPhone.
A month or so ago, I emailed Marco at Instapaper noting that MeFi and AskMe pages render in Instapaper without comments. A member of their support team was nice enough to look into it for me and, from the looks of how posts now render, you should now be able to read posts from across the site on Instapaper.
