What online fora molded you?

This might be too chat-filter-y, but I get the impression that a lot of people on mefi put in serious time in other internet fora before settling here. Just kind of curious if there's a lot of common denominators (Compuserve, The Well, etc?), and if they influenced what you expect from a 'good' online community and that's why you ended up here. I didn't put this in ask-mefi, because I'm more curious about the hardcore metafilter users that read MeTa.

Please help me find a specific FFP

I'm looking for a particular FPP. It was within the last three months, and it was about how to be skeptical of science/things you read on the internet. It was really good, but I didn't have time to read it all then (and I was drunk), and I just now am regretting that I never finished it. I've tried searching, but things like "skeptical" and "science" return a lot of results. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Big thanks to a helpful MeFi-ite

Big ups to DarlingBri who struggled through our phone tree and stepped in to give me some much needed advice and context about ECommerce. It's really pleasant to remember what a positive impact the internet can have on your life. As I found myself completely in over my head with a new project at work, DarlingBri gave a ring all the way from Ireland when my lousy VoIP phone refused to let me dial out.

She gave me gracious access to a real e-commerce back end, completely contextualized our search and helped me understand what a ghetto we've been living in for the last few years.

But more than that, it was wonderful to feel like you can reach out to a community and receive real help. The web is always so saturated with snark and LOLCats and whatever else, it was a beuatiful reminder that there are real people on the other end. So, a cheer for MeFi and three cheers for DarlingBri!

Thanks, yo.

IAALBIANYL

This article gives some insight into the issues surrounging giving legal advice on internet forums, which we occasionally deal with on AskMe: The Dangers of Virtual Cocktail Parties. It's not best-of-the-web, so it didn't merit a MeFi post, but we discuss some of these topics in MeTa now and again, so I thought it might be of interest.

Every so often someone asks "Why does everyone bother with the 'I am not a lawyer' drivel?" And many AskMe questions now end with an eye-rolling "Yeah, yeah, I know you're not my frickin lawyer, but..." The disclaimers aren't meant to be condescending. Not everyone is as savvy as you, and a little "IANAL" or "IANYL" goes a long way towards avoiding the unlicensed practice of law or the creation of unintended attorney-client relationships.

Internet Arguments for charity

Back in April you guys posted and commented on a cartoon I did called "Internet Argument." Matt's allowed me to mention here as a follow-up that I am now auctioning off the original cartoon with all proceeds going to charity. I usually do political cartoons but this one was more about internet, blogging, and general online bickering, and got a lot of attention from sites like MeFi, Slashdot, and Fark. So hopefully some of the people who liked the cartoon might like having the original and, you know, helping sick kids.

100% of the proceeds will go to the Child's Play charity organization delivering toys, video games, and funding for pediatric research to hospitals across North America. I'm kicking in for the shipping and posting fees so no funds have to be shaved off the top.

xkcd's internet map tool implemented. Can we have?

Someone went and implemented xkcd's internet map - it generates pictures like this.

Matt, would you be willing to dump a couple days worth of access_log IPs into this tool?

Why do people engage in Google-bombing?

Why do people feel so thoroughly justified about engaging in Google bombing?

Why is your opinion about something so important as to justify monkeywrenching the best search engine (if not the best thing) on the net? Why is your self-righteous indignation more important that leaving well enough alone?

If it is so important to you, why don't you build something equivalent with the specific aim of "educating the people" and stop piggybacking off of Google?

I am interested in Matt's opinion on this, since he's one of the ones that set this whole thing off.

What should be done to separate rational differences of opinion from hateful propaganda?

According to Friedman of NYT, "thanks to the Internet and satellite TV, the world is being wired together technologically, but not socially, politically or culturally. We are now seeing and hearing one another faster and better, but with no corresponding improvement in our ability to learn from, or understand, one another. So integration, at this stage, is producing more anger than anything else. As the writer George Packer recently noted in The Times Magazine, 'In some ways, global satellite TV and Internet access have actually made the world a less understanding, less tolerant place.'" In some ways, I tend to agree. What can be done? What should be done to separate rational differences of opinion from hateful propaganda?
The internets are disappearing

There appears to be some serious bad juju going on out on the net. Yahoo, for example, has been wiped off the map. It appears to have had its IP address wiped off all the root name servers. I've tried traceroutes from six different places around the globe, and nslookups from a several servers, and they're all like, "Ya-Who?" Plus all lookups for all sites on my local DNS server have become snail-slow. Anyone know more about what's up?
