Automatic double post checking with Javascript?
Would it be possible to add a feature to the new post form that checks for URLs while the user is writing the post, and instantly notifies the user that the post is potentially a double without having to hit Preview? It can be a bummer when you've written a long FPP and then discover it's a double on preview. Site search/domain-specific Google search is kind of unreliable for this in my experience. Or, could we have access to the URL-checking system with a user input field somewhere else in the site?
Busted user script help
It looks like a recent change to the markup of the site might have broken the "Metafilter favorites browser" greasemonkey script. Is it also busted for other folks? Are there any javascript-savvy folks willing to try and fix it?

How did the author of Javascript come to answer a newbie Javascript question?
This AskMe thread which began as a fairly simple "help me understand JavaScript" thread, took an unexpected awesome turn when the original author of Javascript not only made a post to this thread, but signed up for an account just to do it. [more inside]

Seriously, I don't have Javascript turned off...
This javascript error page is a bit of overkill, in my humble opinion. None of the sugestions on the page is relavent. My clicking of the [+] failed because my hellish internet connection hadn't loaded the page completely yet. Is this necessary? I'm quite happy for clicking the [+] to just not work, rather than being bumped off the page.

User javascript for fixing live preview on Opera.
I've been fooling around with user javascript for Opera and fixed a few problems with the live preview. The first problem is that it doesn't appear at all for me. The second problem is the sluggish live update performance when viewing longer threads. My solution is available here, but I wouldn't mind if it found another home, like the metafilter code? For instructions on how to install and enable user javascripts, go to Opera's documentation. [more inside]

JavaScript Error Drama
favorites.js refers to document.getElementById("fav") which is null. This will lead to error pop-ups on every page for some users. If this is not immediately fixed I will resign my membership in protest.
Donate banner howto
Is there a resource Web page for creating the type of banner that appears in the upper right hand corner of Mefi (to donate to the Red Cross)? I can grab the javascript from the code, but was just wondering if there is another page devoted to "how to."
Bookmarklets: secret knowledge sought
Does anybody know how to make bookmarklets? (Also here.) I have an idea for a great one for Metafilter users.
I, like many, use lo-fi me-fi almost exclusively. It's easier on the server, it's easier on my eyes, and it's not so obviously "not work." But when I want to post a comment, in lo-fi, I have to go up to the URL bar and delete the string "comments_deleted." from the URL and click Enter to bring up the comment window. A bookmarklet that did this would allow me to bring up that comment window with a single click to the links toolbar (IE6) -- and perhaps strip out the color at the same time? Anyone?

Javascript fix
I changed the posting pages to use a new javascript fix, to prevent double posts. If it doesn't let you post comments or new threads, let me know here. I tested it on IE 5.01, NN 4.75, and NN 6.0 on win2k, and it worked fine.
what stops people from using metafilter like metababy?
what stops people from using metafilter like metababy? Is it understood? Is some sort of Hive Mind at work here? Although you retain final edit control Matt, what stops someone from entering malicious code or javascript that provides information about members to a second source unnoticed? Is there some sort of preventative measure I don't know about?
