I got back from my trip to a mailbox full of postcards! The most cryptically addressed was just Box 345, 05060. Nothing with just my name and town ... yet.

If favorites are bookmarks, and I'm not saying that they are, it would be nice to be able to search them by username. However, when I access my Favorites via My Profile and use the search box provided to search for comments by someone clever, in this case jessamyn, all the returns are simply comments mentioning our esteemed librarian overlord. Perhaps there is already a way to do this that I'm missing? A quick scan of the FAQ (ctrl-F "search") was not helpful. Basically this is relevant because I can't remember how to spell Elsevier, but I know that jessamyn said they were fuckers.

Summer is not just the time for a MetaTalk queue. It also brings June 13. Metafilter is undoubtedly my favourite place to hang out on the internet. What's up with the ★? On some of jessamyn's posts, I'm seeing it say "jessamyn ★" as the author. It seems to be limited to metatalk, but cortex nor matthowie have one. The wiki isn't helpful, but does mention stars. Google acts like it's been there forever, but I don't remember seeing it. Is this some sleep deprivation induced hallucination I'm having, or does someone know whats up with the star?

Thousands of moderators

Facebook has an open position for a Questions Community Manager. The text itself is pretty fascinating with superlatives like"anything you can dream up", "thousands of moderators" and "the full resources of Facebook at your disposal". I obviously thought about AskMe and Jessamyn, and she agreed it was an interesting Meta post. Knowing that communities start from the ground up, I am especially interested in thoughts about how such a gigantic operation can be handled, if it can at all. If anybody can't reach the link, I'll post the whole announcement. Meanwhile, here is just the "Responsabilities" part:

* Devise creative ways to attract high-quality contributors, e.g. through the use of contests, corporate acquisitions, targeted advertising, incentive programs or anything else you dream up. * Work side by side with the engineering/product team to design user interfaces that attract high-quality contributions. * Manage a team of thousands of moderators and develop tools to empower them to do their jobs more effectively.

Back in November of 2007 I came across jonson’s fpp about Geoff Manaugh’s blog post on a photographer named Shaun O’Boyle. I really liked the photographs, and sometimes my job allows me to develop a book. So I did. Kind of about that link. I asked Geoff Manaugh to write the intro to the book, and he said yes, and then he surprisingly cited an unrelated Metafilter comment in the essay he submitted. So, yeah, thanks for the link. The book's just been published. I hope the book does well, and if it does, thanks to the site for help making it happen. I think it would be accurate to say that this book wouldn’t have happened without you. Though it’s a little weird that all the key figures are no longer members. Except me, of course. Jessamyn helped me get cimborg’s permission to use the quote in the book, and at the time I offered him a gratis copy of the book in exchange for the permission. But alas, he’s no longer available through the site to get an address from. If you know who or where he is, let him know that the offer still stands. I've obtained jonson's email and have sent the offer of a free book to him as well. Thanks!

Kudos to jessamyn I'm relatively new to MetaEtc. A year and a half ago, I started a Facebook page, just to see what the fuss was about. Today I have 12,600 "fans." Who knew. Increasingly, my page wall gets spammed. Most are easily dealt with: delete. But, today, someone important to my organization, and to me, posted blatant spam. What to do? I swear, no word of a lie, I thought: what would jessamyn do? (The other mods are great, I have learned from personal experience, but for whatever reason, I feel most sympatico with jessamyn, the poor dear.) And I had my answer. I zapped it, then prepared a detailed, policy-related response, laying out my rationale. I have yet to hear back from my beloved offender, but, I know my course. So. Thanks.

This post didn't suck, but it was rightfully deleted. Someone should do it over. Some rule about knowing people involved was violated. I honestly think it should, and can be done, but I also know I am not going to rise to the challenge. I tried it before to arguable success. It's not projects worthy, it's not a suck post, and as much as I would like to see not_on_display be totally banned "with fire!" I still think it's attention worthy. Once you factor in HumanComplex's related link, I laughed and laughed. Can someone, anyone, make this into a decent post? No is a reasonable answer. Please?

Jessamyn will travel around the world with me from now on I recently had to get additional pages added to my U.S. passport because all of my visa pages were taken. (Yeah, it's kinda neat, but there's a lot of relatively boring Heathrow stamps in there.) The additional pages that are sewn into one's existing passport have American scenes printed lightly on them. They also have quotes spanning each two-page spread. The quotes are from people like Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Horace Greeley. I was happily surprised to find the inclusion of another great American, Jessamyn West. Her quote is on the pages depicting the railroad and it says, "A big iron needle stitching the country together." I searched here and through the Goog, but I didn't find any mention of this. I hope I didn't overlook it somewhere. Am I the first mefite to need extra passport pages? Or is her quote maybe a recent inclusion? Maybe it's compensation for the whole "Spaz" thing? Regardless, it's totally rad. Congratulations, Jessamyn!
