Can we have a do over?

This post didn't suck, but it was rightfully deleted. Someone should do it over. Some rule about knowing people involved was violated. I honestly think it should, and can be done, but I also know I am not going to rise to the challenge. I tried it before to arguable success. It's not projects worthy, it's not a suck post, and as much as I would like to see not_on_display be totally banned "with fire!" I still think it's attention worthy. Once you factor in HumanComplex's related link, I laughed and laughed. Can someone, anyone, make this into a decent post? No is a reasonable answer. Please?

What were the mods like (on Metafilter) before they were mods? Please point me to notable posts by Jessamyn, Cortex, et al from when they were just some schmo on MeFi like you or me. This query inspired by Matt's blog post reflecting on 10 years of Metafilter.

Jessamyn will travel around the world with me from now on I recently had to get additional pages added to my U.S. passport because all of my visa pages were taken. (Yeah, it's kinda neat, but there's a lot of relatively boring Heathrow stamps in there.) The additional pages that are sewn into one's existing passport have American scenes printed lightly on them. They also have quotes spanning each two-page spread. The quotes are from people like Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Horace Greeley. I was happily surprised to find the inclusion of another great American, Jessamyn West. Her quote is on the pages depicting the railroad and it says, "A big iron needle stitching the country together." I searched here and through the Goog, but I didn't find any mention of this. I hope I didn't overlook it somewhere. Am I the first mefite to need extra passport pages? Or is her quote maybe a recent inclusion? Maybe it's compensation for the whole "Spaz" thing? Regardless, it's totally rad. Congratulations, Jessamyn!

We're going to be experimenting with some gentle scaling back of Metafilter's scope and services. For budgetary reasons, it's become clear that we need to find a way to streamline how the site operates to keep the LLC functioning in the black. While we don't want to make any fundamental changes to the site we all love, we are going to be rolling out a few incremental tweaks that after long behind-the-scenes discussion we've concluded will make a workable compromise between our desire to preserve the character of the site and our need to keep Metafilter viable in the long run. A few of these will be fairly visible: 1. AskMe will be switching to a pigmentless layout in order to save on dye and, we hope, attract a more professional, revenue-friendly crowd. 2. To save on Flash licenses and limit our liability against future IP claims from legitimate talents, Metafilter Music is going to be stripped down considerably and will henceforth be known as Metafilter Tuneless Idle Humming. 3. Projects will have its posting requirements tightened somewhat—from now on, we'll only be accepting projects that (a) are revenue-generating and (b) guarantee Metafilter, LLC a 30% share in gross, retroactive. 4. Given the current employment landscape, Jobs is being replaced with Hobbies, For Now, But Who Knows What'll Happen In A Couple Years, Right? That's the big stuff. We're also going to try to reclaim some bandwidth costs by reducing the footprint of Metatalk threads, but that's more of a technical issue re: text compression than anything. Though it's been suggested that the protocol we're switching to may actually reduce the animosity on this part of the site as a side effect, which, I'll believe it when I see it, but it's worth a shot. If you've got any thoughts on all this, please let us know in this thread. Thanks very much for running with us on these decisions.

The only reason I saw this, incidentally, was that the banned book list was forwarded to me and I googled it. Second result is Malkin, fourth is Metafilter's own jessamyn. (Too bad about the order.)
