Links for the Memories

The welcome-back message on the front page reads 'x links and y comments posted since your last visit' (except, y'know, with numbers). But most posts contain more than one link. Would it be better to have it read 'x posts and y comments'? There's probably a downside I'm not seeing.

Where do you discover the links you post to the blue?

Where do you people find the things you post to the "blue", and how do you consistently find them before the rest of us? Specifically to those of you who make art or photography posts here on Metafilter, where do you first learn of the things you link here? Reddit? Stumbleupon? Digg? Certain blogs? Where is the bleeding edge of the internet? (At a mod's suggestion, I am reposting this now deleted question from AskMe.)

This question is motivated by my frustration at having over 20 failed attempts at posting something to the front page only to learn on preview that it was already posted a few days or weeks before. Where is everyone finding all these interesting links?

How did this happen to my first fpp?

I am not an idiot. So how did my first fpp (after 4 years of enjoyable lurking) end up with a link back to metafilter itself? If you click on it from the front page, it links to metafilter.com. Once you're inside the post, it links to itself. Seen here.

Could we post weak links to the "back" page?

Could there be something like a Back Page Post? So I just read this on Gizmodo. Its quirky and interesting, but not at all sufficient for a FPP.

I got to wondering. What if there was a back page? No comments to moderate. Users can just post weak-but-somewhat interesting links. People who dare can filter through the less-awesome-ness. Then if it gets enough favorites, maybe that link gets highlighted somewhere?

It seems like some interesting links are just inherently too weak. Also it seems like sometimes something interesting happens after the start of a relevant existing thread--but the new bit will never be seen because the thread is off the front page.

Please forgive me if there's already a mechanism for dealing with this situation. (Or if this isn't a "situation" to anyone but me!)

Mouseover Text and Share This Link Feature Requests

I respectfully request two ponies, please. First pony; In the sidebar for contact activity, could we make it so that a mouseover of the text of the title of a newly posted FPP/Question reveals the full title? This would allow people to see the full text of the title, which sometimes is truncated by the sidebar, without actually needing to click the link and visit the thread to see what the full title is.

Second pony: What do we think of a 'Share This Link' feature? The way I envisage this working would be under the text of a new FPP or question, we would see something like;

posted by MeFite (18 comments total) [add to favorites] [!] [Share This Link]

Clicking on 'Share This Link' would automatically open up your default e-mail program and a new e-mail with text that says something like "Hi [name of your friend or relation], check out this great link about [title of post] by [name of MeFite] at [MeFi/AskMe/Projects/Music]", followed by an actual link to the thread. This would be a great way to share MeFi with friends and family!

What say you, mods?

URL problem in "my favorites"

There's a bug in the links on the MetaTalk "my favorites" tab. On the my favorites tab of MetaTalk, the date/time link to all the favorited threads (for example, "Jul-7-09 at 9:16 PM") is messed up. The first part of the URL goes to http://metatalk.metafilter.com.metafilter.com.

Screwy Links and Reloading Issues

I'm not sure if this a MeFi bug or something with my browser or set-up. I have experienced this on different computers and tried reloading Firefox, but I think that it is still going on. What gives? Is it some sort of local proxy or cache issue? I'm at work right now and it's definitely doing it, but this has happened to me at home as well (I am 95% sure). For the last week or so, if, within any Metafilter window, I click on the upper right corner links to go to the other sections of the site, the browser status bar transfers the data and the URL changes, but the actual page does not. It will not change to the target of the clicked link until I hit refresh. In addition, if I don't hit refresh and click on a displayed MeFi link without reloading the page, it takes me to some random page from long ago, or alternatively, a MeFi page that says I've clicked a bad link (I can't reproduce this right now) - this all seems to depend on the portion of the site I am starting from. If I click on an external link, that works fine. I have not experienced these sorts of problems on any other site. What the hell is going on? It seems like it has to do with how my local servers are caching the pages, but I sure as hell don't understand why that would prevent my browser from loading the links I click.

My (youtube) links, they're a changin'!

Is there some behind-the-scenes Youtube link changing going on? (not that there's anything wrong with that) I posted this comment and linked to a Youtube playlist and a regular video. Just now I was looking at recent activity, and both links were light green since I've already been there, when all of a sudden they changed to the regular, new-link-that-I-haven't-been-to green, and they're both normal, youtube links. That is, the "this clip" link had a "related" tag in the URL, and the playlist link wasn't just pointing to a video, but to a playlist.
The only similar MeTa I could find was this thread, but it looks like my issue is something else. Feel free to let me know if I should comment over there, though.

I'm running FF 3.0.6 on Vista.

Beating dead ponies

There are x MetaFilter links to this post... ...where x is a number and an HREF to a page listing the posts that link to this post. In my mind, this would include links within the comments section, too, but if that's too much of an issue, links in the actual post would still be an improvement.

Not sure how doable this is within this architecture, but it might be kind of a fun feature. Frequently, I'll see old stuff popping up here or there and wonder, "Now why is this suddenly getting attention again? Did somebody link to it?" With this feature we could follow the breadcrumbs and keep stale converations going almost indefinitely!

Link Menus

A few small suggestions concerning the Links menu. Not a huge deal, just a few ideas and inconsistencies.

1. It'd be nice if the MefiWiki could be linked on all the site link menus and not just on the MetaTalk link menu. There's lot's of additional information and context in there that might help new users looking around the blue or green or dare I say, Music, that may not visit MetaTalk or spot it there, and it would save clicks for the lazy bookmarkers among us (e.g., me)

2. I think it would be cool to remove the "Home" link. It just redirects the user to the index of whatever section of the site they are currently browsing, which can be done under the Sites Menu a few inches to the right. I feel like removing the connotation of home in addition to just visually reminding the user of the other sections (cough cough, Music) would be good. It's also redundant.

3. The FAQ link should be added to the link menu on all the sites, not just MetaTalk. It's hidden away down and to the right under the copyright stuff everywhere except MetaTalk, where it appears both there and in the link menu. I'd say take out "Home" on all of them, bump everything up one, and stick the FAQ on the bottom. Or even in place of Home at the very top on all the link menus, so maybe more folks will read it.

Just a couple thoughts, maybe a little break from the MeTa weirdness lately.

I'm not printing it, I'm reading it.

Please don't link just to the print format version of long articles. I know we've discussed this before but it's been a few years, near as I can tell and I've seen a rapidly increasing number of examples of it in the last few weeks.

I know some people prefer the no advertising view of things, but the properly formatted versions of pages tend to be more readable (with shorter line lengths) and contain things like images that the print versions don't. Plus, and this is key, the regular version will generally contain a link to the print version if one exists, while the same is not true in reverse--very often there's no way to get from a print version to one formatted for reading.

That it's kinder and fairer to content providers to link to their content with advertising and formatting in place is another argument, but more a matter of opinion, so I'm making this plea just based on the practical ease-of-use arguments:

Please include links to both the normal and print versions of an article, or, if you must choose just one, the normal version.

Clicking links ≠ open in new tab/window? MeFi used to open all links in the blue in a new page for me. No longer so. I think this is a fairly recent change in behaviour.

Does the same hold true for others? I don't recall doing a thing with my bookmark for the site, so I think the change must be on the MeFi side. I have deleted cookies to ensure it isn't a pref's buggery.

Linking to Deleted Posts?

Something about the most recent Alberto Gonzales post really irks me: people linking to their deleted posts in comments. It seems to me that this (a) just fundamentally defeats the point of the deletion, (b) lowers the incentive to make a good post in the first place -- since you can always link to it if it gets canned, and (c) is contrary to at least the tacit reasons underlying the no-double-post policy. (Obviously, there's a separate PoliticsFilter issue here, and the problems are related, but I would like to focus on the linking-to-deleted-posts issue and get a clarification on it.)

Adding link to post.

So I am a new member. I am having a hard time getting the link option to work. I click on the blue "Link" link, enter the link, then preview it and I get the full html in the preview. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!!

Mefi permanent cache links

Should the MeFi complex permanently cache links? Is it legal?

I recently desired to access some link I had added as a comment. My comment included a link to a PDF of testicle size. However when I now follow the chain the PDF has been removed.

Why was it removed? Either because the link became so popular that somebody figured they could make money off of it, maybe generated by my linking to it, or because of space limitations or reorganizations on the server. Anyway the link and its content have now evaporated and only maybe can I find a new link to it.

The cost/gigabite is now so low that it seems the MeFi complex could cache every link added. As long as the cache was not exposed to the outside to allow google searches (and similar traffic).

If some linked page was once put in the public domain does that mean that once it is removed it is no longer in the public domain?
