What's the point of metafilter?

I'm really new here, and I was hoping I could get some input as to what Metafilter's all about. What I thought it was all about was a community blog where we posted the most unusual links, the ones that every other semi-popular blog site was posting at the same time. The best example of this is "all you base are belong to us". Everyone had that link.

But now I think it's more intelligent of a community than that, or at least it's supposed to be. So the question I have is two part:
1. What's the point of metafilter?
2. If it's not to point to all your base are belong to us, then where can we post (and find) such links?

Clickthrough counter?

How about a counter that would allow us to see how many times a particular link has been viewed? On the other hand, might be a bit cluttery. Just a thought.

it'd be nice to have a link back to MetaFilter from MetaTalk

Actually, more MetaTalk specific... just a small usability thing...

it'd be nice to have a link back to MetaFilter from MetaTalk.. searched around all over the page until I found a link at the bottom of the page. Yep. That's all. I'm just being picky/lazy.

CNN = BOTW?

I'm just wondering if there should be something more explicit in the guidelines about posting stories from CNN et al. There seems to be some amount of consensus here that this kind of news can be found lots of places on the web and shouldn't be posted on MeFi. What to do?

Vague links vaguely annoying

It's kind of anoying when people link to things without any description of what's actually behind the link. That's sort of like "Click here", which is also annoying.

It would be nice if more people described the site/article/whatever they were linking to withen within the link text or the body of the post, or at least did a title="" attribute on the tag. Would save some time finding the interesting stuff, especially on those high-volume days.

Can we search for links?

We can search for specific text, but is it possible to expand the search capability to include sites linked to? (Search for any links to www.whatadeal.org/foo/ for example.) This would help in determining if something is a repeated link or not.

Useful information sources from the front page

Are you suffering from information overload? For my own bookmarking benefit, I scanned the front page of MeFi and picked the best links. The list is pretty impressive. Consider this a massive condensed version of what several of you consider to be the premier news sources and content providers on the Internet. Did I miss any? Should some not belong on the list? Got milk? [MORE]

Did you come for the links or for the discussion?

Ok, this *does* belong in MetaTalk, and I'll bet you no one even notices it here...

Has anyone noticed lately which threads are pulling all the comments? This place seems to be half weblog, and half Slashdot lately, and while we do it much better than they do these days (no one left their sense of humor in their other pants, notably, for the most part, and no one's anonymous -- but that's a topic for a different thread) I just think it's interesting the the actual *links* don't get much comment.

It's more the stuff that's almost 'designed' to engender lots of commentary that seems to be quite successful at it. Maybe that's a tautology, but *I* thought it was interesting.

Of course, maybe it's just me.

So many things are just me.

I want links in new windows

I changed my prefs back to having links open in the same window. The prefs tell me that is what is going to happen now, but it never does. I've logged out and in, etc etc, no matter what, the links still spawn a new window.

I really don't want to check MF one day and find a link to Mahir

Almost without exception, all the stuff I've seen posted here in the last week is stuff that has either been posted here before or has been posted everywhere else first. I have a small suggestion to help alleviate this situation: a disclaimer on the post page discouraging people to post links culled from other weblogs. That way, there will be more first-run links. I really don't want to check MF one day and find a link to Mahir. I really don't.
