I am a relurker

I now find myself (temporarily perhaps) in a growing class of MetaFilter users not often mentioned: the relurkers. [More inside.]

MonkeyFilter: More Bananas, Less Flinging.

As proposed in the recent "new members" thread, the lurker-activist MonkeyFilter is now open for the huddled masses.

MetaFilter Letters

Perhaps I'm seen as a soft touch or something but people keep emailing me with requests for posting links, comments or just general attitudes. Mostly they're honest reactions to discussions here. Or interesting suggestions.

There certainly seems to be a lot of occasional readers who feel strongly about the issues discussed here. Could there be the equivalent of a Letters category on MetaTalk, for readers who aren't members to react to the threads that exercise them? At least until registrations are open again? As a fan of letters sections in newspapers and magazines, my opinion is that it would make MetaFilter even livelier.

Active MeFi Members

How many of the 13179 metafilter members actively participate (post and read) on a regular basis? Is that number the result of a SELECT MAX(user_identity) type SQL statement or is it calculated somehow based on readership and usage?

How many of these accounts are test accounts? How many are inactive? How many were created and then never used or rarely used to post over the previous 2 or 3 years? How many are not Neale Talbot?

I'd love to see some histograms.

Lurking and the community

Everything I Know I Learned at MetaFilter. I am amazed at how many of the little knowledge bits I pass on each day to friends, family and co-workers I originally came across on MeFi. It is a rare day that I do not access the site multiple times. Truly addictive.

But I feel like a bit of a leech though...always lurking and rarely posting. I'd like to hear the experiences of other habitual users who tiptoe around the fringe...are we legion or merely the non-vocal minority? Community members or parasite?
