Mark as Read

Yet-Another-Mefi-Mail-Pony: "Mark as Read" button in e-mail notification. So, I get my MeFi Mail sent to my e-mail address. Even when I read it there, though, I have to click onto the MeFi Mail box and read it again in order to mark it as read. Is there any way to have a "mark as read" button in the e-mail notification, or automatically mark as read all MeFi Mail sent by e-mail or something like that?

Apologies for the 27 millionth MeFi Mail pony request. I just have a pathological need to get rid of the number next to my mail icon.

Pony: Search MeMail? Is it possible to search your MeMail for a specific word or phrase? I think that would be a helpful pony.

Of course, this may be one of those cases where I imagine some wonderful feature only to learn that it already exists and has since the site was created. If so....never mind.

Message inbox export?

Request for feature - message export functionality. May we have a message export button?

Looking at the functionality I realize messages may not be threaded or contain much metadata, so I realize it might need to be just "inbox file" and "outbox file" or something simple.

But even that would be handy. Plaintext, flatfile, CSV, whatever.

MeFiSwap Summer 09 Mailing Deadline Reminder - Aug 15!

MeFiSwap Summer '09 reminder thread — Mailing deadline is Saturday, August 15! Hey swappers!

This is just a friendly reminder from your local swap organizer that mixes need to be mailed out no later than August 15. (You should also have a fresh email reminder from me...my last group communique until next swap.)

If for whatever reason you can't make that deadline, please either email your swapset to let them know or alert me so I can pass on the news. I know I don't need to remind you that flakers are derided and loathed to the extreme.

Questions? I'll be around this thread to answer them, or send them in via email. My email address is in my profile.

MeFiSwap Summer 2009

MeFiSwap Summer '09
Believe it or not, it's been about that long. Let's mail each other good music. I think these work best if some guidelines are set out right at the beginning:

Email me at tediseasy asper@nd gmail stop. com if you would like to participate. Please include your mailing address and your username. If you would prefer not to use email, memail me. However, things are much simpler from an organizational standpoint if I can use the robust features afforded by email rather than barebones memail, so email is preferred.

Sign-up deadline is 2 weeks from today, July 12th.

If there's enough interest, I'd be happy to set up side swaps for tapes or whatever (how many of you cut vinyl?), but let's stick to swapping CDs for the most part and mixes of music for sure (not teddy bears or tshirts or wevs).

If you signed up to participate last time but didn't mail out your mix, you are not invited to swap again. If you sign up to participate this time, do so with the full intention of mailing out at least 5 mix CDs. You may be asked to mail overseas (and if you live outside the USA, you will most definitely be asked to mail packages to foreign countries). Communication is important; if you can't get your mixes out by the deadline (see below), let me or the other members of your swapset know.

Once sign-ups are closed, everyone will be broken up into swapsets. Swapsets are ideally 6 members big, so each swapper will mail out 5 copies of their mix. If you're in the mood to mail out more (and receive more in return!), lemme know in the email.

There's generally a deadline set for mailing swaps out, so let's set that to Saturday, August 15th.

As usual, I feel like I'm leaving a lot out of this, so if you have any questions I'll be skulking around here all day and/or email me.

Can you remove the requirement that MeFi mails have to have text in the body? Sometimes a quick question/comment in the subject line suffices. I think most of us are techologically literate enough to not need the reminder that we are sending w/o text, and it doesn't remove any functionality for anyone.

CD Swap Reminder - Jan. 20!

MeFi Winter CD Swap reminder!
Hey swappers, the deadline to mail your mixes is one week from today, January 20th. If you can't mail out by next Monday, please let the rest of your swapset know. I am willing to pass on any messages as well.

My own mix is just about finished; as soon as it's unleashed upon my fakebandmates I'll post a link here to a digital copy (for anyone who didn't/couldn't participate but still sorta wants to).

mefi mail alerts

Mefi Mail Alert Options? I love the mefi-mail system, however I find myself wishing I noticed it more often. Partially my own fault -- I have a 22" LCD running at 1920x1200, which puts that tinsy "x new" alert up in the highest depths of the right hand corner that I never look at.

Would it be possible to have one or more of the following?

1. Alert me somehow when I have new messages with a box across the top of the page (you have unread messages from the last 5 days).

2. Email me on new messages (I know I know .. it defeats the purpose).

3. Show me, on the first page I visit when I start a new session (ie, havent used mefi in over 20 minutes) that I have new messages?

MeFiSwap 2008

Hey, anybody wanna swap Muxtapes? ...Oh.
Well, how about another MeFi CD swap? It's been a while since we've mailed each other shiny discs of mix, and I'm itching for that wonderful feeling at the mailbox. (Plus, thanks to AskMe my digital music collection is finally all in one place and organized!) So let's swap.

Last year 'round this time ND¢ proposed a swap twisted to only include music from 2007 (The Best of 2007). I'd like to go back to a free-for-all this time around. Swappers have been consistently impressive over the years when coming up with their own mix themes, and I figure Best of 2008 is still applicable if you want; it's just not required. Send the music you're listening to, and the music you love.

A couple of questions come up every time.

Who's organizing?
I would be happy to, though I can't promise Dreama-level organization. I'll probably just keep track of everything on paper and email swap sets out. Sets are ideally six people big (everyone sends out 5 discs). International swappers will probably be mailing to the USA. I'm kind of excited about organizing this, having participated over the past 5 or 6 years, but if anyone else has a burning desire to step up and put everything together, that's fine.

What do I send?
Generally I've received single CD mixes in slimline jewel cases. Liner notes have ranged from nothing at all through single-page hand-written tracklist all the way to elaborately designed liner booklets. They usually come in padded mailers.

Can we trade tapes instead of CDs?
It's a CD swap. I suppose if five or six people pipe up wanting to trade tapes they could be a separate group, but I'd prefer we stick to burned CDs.

What about digital mixes? Why don't we just leave the dirty, expensive hassle of snail mail and send each other archive folders?
My main reason for wanting to keep it dirty is sentimental: I love getting mail. Even more, I love getting mail with music CDs inside. One thing that worked really well last year was to have a follow-up thread where everyone who mailed discs posted their tracklists and maybe a link to that downloadable archive of the mix. People who don't want to (or can't) swap via mail can still join in at the end.

How come I didn't get mixes from everybody in my group?
It happens sometimes, for whatever reason, that not all the mixes make it out. It's sad, it's disappointing, and it's a risk you take by participating. People flake, forget, or simply can't get life out of the way long enough to mail strangers music. So I'm doing a cursory reading back through old swap threads; as usual the people who didn't send out mixes after saying they would in the past won't be in this swap.

Is there a deadline?
I suggest a couple deadlines. First, swap sets will be determined and mailed out by December 1st. That leaves 3 weeks for interested parties to sign up. Then how about January 20th, Inauguration Day, for a mailing deadline? That give about a month and a half to get 'em together and out into the world.

This looks like the longest thing I've written on MeFi, so I'll stop now. Suggestions? Still interested?

Who's up for some new music?

Where did that link go?

Should there be a visual indicator that someone has opted out of MeMail? I wanted to MeMail someone who had opted out of the service and ended up very confused. When someone opts out it is not obvious, instead the "send MeFi Mail" link just isn't there, and I spent several minutes trying to figure out how to send the cursed mail. Shouldn't there be something more informative than a lack of link so that the rare opted out case is more obvious, maybe a "User has opted out of MeFi Mail" label where the link normally lives?

Thanks for the letters

Very very long overdue, but thank you so much for all the mail! The video got me some attention, though most of the letters (which all came in within a month after that video went up) came from Mefites. I'm really sorry I never got round to replying to any of you. That particular month was full of personal crazy and I ended up spending the rest of of the year trying to work past the crazy.

I got quite a number of lovely letters, cards, and postcards - some of you wrote about your work, one person turned a map into a letter, and I got postcards from Canada to China. One particular Mefite sent me a tiny box with a toy elephant - my "lucky elephant"! That made my day soooo much.

I'm overseas at the moment so I'm nowhere near my mail, but I still have it all packed up somewhere. Thank you for brightening my day, especially during that really crazy month - it was a very trying time emotionally and the letters were one of the few things keeping me somewhat sane. (I'm better now, thankfully.)

We could do this two ways:
1. Sequential snailmail exquisite corpse (as I originally suggested): one of us starts, passes it on.
2. Parallel SEC: all of us start off at the same time and snailmail it to the next Mefite.

2'll keep the ocd add amongst us drugged and happy and produce lotsa 'mail art pics' MeTa posts.
1'll result in a giant collaborative piece and fewer pics.

I'm thinking 2. Whaddaya say?

And join in! No lower artistic talent bound.

I wish there was a web form that would allow a member to send an email to another member that is not showing their address. Require the sender to be logged in, and maybe even hold it until the sender responds to a confirmation email sent to their own registered address.
