A follow up to this little post I made a few years ago about a fellow that was attempting to walk every street and lane of his surroundings. His passing has given me pause to reflect on the idea of community and how posting events from the local to the global bring us closer together. I want to say thank you to mathowie for providing us with this forum for sharing these often unheard stories.

Two months ago, Fearless Leader gave a neat talk at WebVisions 2008 about how to make money off your particular web passion without resorting to venture capital interference or selling out, and the slides and the audio (MP3) from his talk are now online. It's plenty cool enough to watch/listen to on its own merits, if you've ever dreamed of running your own web company or making a small-but-cool web tool -- but since MetaFilter (and what it's been like to start and run MetaFilter) are mentioned prominently, I thought it was worth noting here, rather than on the Blue. I'm glad you didn't have to sell your bike, Matt!

Looking for analysis of what works on MeFi, probably a couple of years old, written IIRC by mathowie. I have this burning desire to help a local blogging community succeed, and I'm trying to help them stop reinventing the wheel/thinking they're the first people to ever deal with online community issues. So...I have this vague recollection of something that mathowie wrote, maybe on his own blog, maybe a couple of years ago, about the growth or evolution of MeFi. I have searched and searched, but unfortunately I can't remember enough specifics to search well. :( And it may not have been on his blog or here, but somewhere else. To my own astonishment, I don't seem to have it saved in my delicious or in my blog. If it helps, it may have been something related to powazek's book on designing for community, like a way-later followup. I just remember it being really thoughtful, and potentially useful for this other group. Or y'all can tell me that I'm crazy, and making up essays/posts in my damn head. That's okay too. :)

Look who's going to ROFLcon! It's a "a group dissection of internet culture" and "big blowout party" in Cambridge, MA, April 25th and 26th that promoters call "the most important gathering since the fall of the tower of Babel" (and possibly just as productive). Wish I could be there. Other Honored Guests include Jay Maynard the Tron Guy, The Brothers Chaps of Homestar Runner, Where the Hell is Matt Harding?, Drew Farking Curtis, moot of 4chan, several popular webcomickers, “Cheezburger” and other leading LOLCATs, Lemon Demon and MC Frontalot (for musical entertainment) and ~~Evil~~Anil Dash*. So how come A.D. and (The Late TechTV's) Martin Sargent get to be listed as "Awesome Folks/Internet Culture Pundits/Captains of Internet Industry" while MetaFilter's Mathowie is in the "Internet Celebs" list with all the freaks? And why wasn't this widely known here before Registration Closed? Or were you only hiding it from ME?
